Day 21 Preston - Hest Bank 44 miles (659) After staying at my brother's house in Stockport I used the crowded rush hour trains to get to Preston by 9.00 am. After a circuit or two of the centre of Preston I got ny bearings and headed out through the suburbs on to ever quieter roads on the rich agricultural land of the Fylde . After a coffee at Kirkham I turned north and followed minor roads leaving the delights(!) of Blackpool a few miles to the west. Quiet flattish country with several sightings of hares in the fields. By lunchtime I had reached the north of the promontory and had a small detour into Glasson Dock at the mouth of the Lune Estuary. A good cycle path on an old railway line led right ... read more

After a recent complaint of telling things in real time I'm going to try and keep this one brief. I came up to Preston from London on the train which was about half an hour late to set off and then had no seat reservations. This was despite having to fork out about £65 for a one-way ticket which was more than my flight to Budapest and another couple of quid to reserve a seat. It then took about 4 and a half hours for the journey, door to door, which was more than leaving my flat and being in the hotel in Barcelona. The distance between London and Barcelona? 707 miles. The distance between London and Preston? 190 miles. I'm hoping the rail system in Eastern Europe runs a bit smoother otherwise I'll end up ... read more

Day 20 Liverpool - Southport 24 miles (615) A fairly gentle day out with Pete (brother) taking the train from Stockport and returning from Southport on the train. Arriving in Liverpool we followed the signs north past the docks . At one point we became aware of a large number of people converging on a seemingly derelict warehouse at the end of a blind alley. It appeared to be a Sunday flea pit market. Leaving Liverpool we were soon at the rather bleak expanse of Formby sands fighting against the blowing sand on the coastal path. A few individuals were braving the elements to walk on the beach, but some were there for a bit longer! Anthony Gormley's installation "Another Place" . with the view out to sea of wind farms and the distant North ... read more

Geo: 51.3044, 1.22566 Kim and I went to the Preston Steam Rally. This is a rally in the small town of Preston where the main attraction is antique steam powered equipment. Never had we seen such a collection of steam powered machines. There was every kind of steam powered equipment you can imagine including a steam powered marry-go-round, tractors, trains, even a steam powered fan. In addition to steam powered machine there were carnival rides, beer and food tents, antique petrol powered engines, Dutch street organs, fair organs and military equipment. The people who put on this event have a steam powered museum. http://www.thesteammuseum.org/ This was a fascinating event. To see all these old machines in great working order was a thrill. The whistle of the steam and the smell of burning coal reminded you that ... read more

Gday again everyone After the best shower we both have had since we have been here we decided we would go to Blackpool for the day. What a brilliant day it was too. Though for the most part the attractions were closed we had a look at the South Pier and then while we were walking to the Central Pier we hailed a horse and buggy and took that for a ride. A really nice ride... Central Pier had a few of their rides going and we went for a quiet ride of the large Ferris Wheel. I won Jules a Stuffed Tiger on the darts. We then went on to Madame Toussad's Great Grandson's Louis Toussad's Wax Works In the late 1890's Louis got a bit jack of the way they were running Madame Toussad's ... read more

We were up early again today and all packed before breakfast. We are going to spend the morning doing some washing before going on the 2 hour aqueduct canal tour. We finished the washing a bit earlier, the machines were better than in Hythe, so we went for a walk around the local market. Mark bought a tin of "anti-freeze" for the windscreen. I thought a plastic scraper like everyone else has, but Mr Tech wasn't going to go for the "old fashioned way".... LOL We'll see what it's like in the morning. We had a great time on the aquaduct. It took us 2 hours to go 8 miles, but I could easily live on one and cruise up and down the country. We went across the Pontcysllte Aquaduct which is the United Kingdom's tallest ... read more
