One of the things I was most looking forward to on my extended holiday was visiting the many museums and art galleries. I studied Art History in university and developed a great appreciation for the Great Masters. And what better place to start than London, home to the British Museum and National Gallery (among others, but I'll get to those in a later blog). The National Gallery was first. Its work range from the Gothic period through to Romantic and Impressionist movements of the 19th century. It was the most amazing feeling to see paintings that I had only previously seen in textbooks and slideshows "in the flesh." My favourite painter is Caravaggio and I swear I spent a good twenty minutes transfixed in front of his "Supper at Emmaus." Delaroche's "Execution of Lady Jane" was ... read more

Hey, I just joined this site today (July 31, 2006) so I thought I'd start with my journal entries from my first big trip back in the summer of 2001. A little background info first: I live in Mississauga, a largish city just outside of Toronto, Canada. In my last year of university, I wasn't sure what I was going to do upon graduation. The thought of jumping straight into the workforce after 19 years of schooling (and those last few were brutal!) didn't really appeal to me. One day at school, I saw this poster for something called the Student Work Abroad Program (SWAP). It's an organization that provides temporary work visas to young people in various countries around the world. Once in the destination of your choice, the local SWAP office supports you by ... read more

I’m backlogging some of my previous travels in Europe from when I was in high school and college. They won’t contain much information as it was a while ago, but I would be more than happy to share my experiences with anyone who has a question. I’ve been to London several times. I saw a lot of the typical tourist sites; I was in high school and hadn’t done much in the way of independent travel. However, Stonehenge remains one of my favorite sites in the world. The mystery surrounding it is just unparallel (never been to the pyramids) and it is spectacular.... read more

DAY 14 - THURSDAY 2 SEPTEMBER Got up and watched ?The Jim Stynes Story - Dublin?s Jim?, which is available from Australian Football Video. I had never seen it before and recommend it to anyone. Jim?s story is a great one and hopefully will inspire other Irishmen to follow him. There?s definitely a lot of talent here. Caught a taxi to Croke Park and had a meeting with Debbie Massey, from the Policy and Planning Unit of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). By way of introduction I gave her some background info on the IAFC as well as a couple of copies of The International Footballer. I then requested a copy of the GAA?s international database i.e. a contact list of all Gaelic football clubs outside Ireland. The reason for seeking such a list is simple. ... read more

My First trip across the big blue ocean and my first (of many) stamps in my passport. London, England 1999 Thursday, February 18, 1999. It is hard to believe that only a week ago I had no plans to go to Europe and for that matter, I didn’t even have a passport. But after some super saver emails, trips to the post office and some quick packing, here we are. Deanne and I boarded the plane around 8ish EST. Our in flight food and entertainment was nice. We had pasta with cheese and sausage for dinner but they showed Simon Birch as the dinner time movie. Ever seen it? It is extremely sad. However, later in the evening, when everyone else was trying to sleep, they played the new Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker movie Rush ... read more

Its was a cold November morning. My alarm started ringing at 4:30 am with the song »L'ombelico del mondo« - the belly of the world - loudly. Anyway, it was a short night, as packing was done into long night hours. So, i picked up Adi some 30 minutes later, just as he was just getting his hair cut (at 5am in the morning hehe)... actually, he didn't even go to sleep, funny (straight from work, but hey, he was seriously tired afterwards in the day)... My dad then drove us to the airport, and i got seriously annoyed by his slow driving... But OK, better safe than sorry, as our trip was just starting ;) Yep, my first trip... overseas... so, my travelling career is starting :) So, our first stop was London, an overnight ... read more
