An Excerpt from the Travel Journal of Nigel Fox (c. 1940) Entry 26 -- The First Horseman Whilst Hans was once again in the thick of his travels in Germany, my excursions took me to Wewelsburg. The Spiritual centre for this New World Order was in the shape of a spear. On the surface, Wewelsburg was a glorious Teutonic castle, majestic and somewhat overpowering. Its depths held many mysteries: there could be found a complete library of the Dark Gods; a secret printing complex which published 'Sigrunen' (the Armanen newspaper); a planetarium; a courtroom. Runic symbols permeated the entire complex: the Evil could be felt at every level. The Round Table of the New Order was where the elite of the Armanen gathered. This intricately carved... read more

An Excerpt from the Travel Journal of H. Nigel Fox circa 1920 ENTRY TWELVE -- The Secret Doctrine "Two pints of Castle Lager," shouted Hans, as he ordered the 'beer of Africa' over the din. A few moments later the barmaid appeared with their liquid refreshment. Hans and Heidi were meeting at what was becoming a regular haunt: a popular pub in Carter Lane, not far from St. Paul's Cathedral. This particular establishment imported beer from round the world. "Cheers," he said, as they lifted their glasses. Hans had many questions, particularly about the List Society. As casually as he could, he interrogated her. Hans had moved them to a table in the far corner. By her second pint, Heidi needed no encouragement; she shook with excitement. Her feelings were transparent or at least reasonably translucent. ... read more

An Excerpt from the Travel Journal of H. Nigel Fox Jr. circa 1920 ENTRY ELEVEN -- The Dark World Over the next several days, Hans and I met several times with Scotland Yard. We also had extensive meetings with the chaperon, as well as Anna's twenty-two year old friend. "We have learned nothing!" Hans corrected me. "You are wrong, Nigel. We have learned a great deal. I am now reasonably certain that no one in the family -- or either of Anna's travelling companions, for that matter -- had anything to do with this. I am also convinced that Anna's demise was no accident." "How can you say that?" "Bodies float. If she fell overboard as the Captain's report stated, she would have most definitely surfaced." "But who would want to abduct Anna?" Hans said firmly, ... read more

23 December 1983 Friday. In keeping with our policy not to spend Christmases at home, we decided to take a cheap flight from Stuttgart to London. We arrived midday, took the tube to our hotel on the north side of Hyde Park, and then went to Leicester Square to see a movie and have dinner to celebrate of 11th anniversary. 24 December 1983 Saturday. We returned to Leicester Square to the cheap tickets booth to purchase tickets for a show that evening. We finally saw Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap. We spent the rest of the day touring the British Museum and shopping on Oxford Street and Harrods, returning to the theater district for dinner before our play. London was certainly all dressed up for Christmas, with all the streets and shops lit up for the occasion. 25 ... read more

Monday, June 27 South Kensington, London Please note that this is a vintage article. Hotels and restaurants may still exist but may have changed hands. The Rembrandt Hotel has since been renovated and upgraded and Garnier and Brasserie St. Quentin are rumored to have closed, or maybe not, depending on the source. Always call ahead to avoid outrage and disappointment. Also although the exchange rate between the Pound and the Dollar may be the same over time, the prices listed here are decades old. But hopefully you will enjoy the writing style as it was intended, a journal entry of its time. The Michelin Guide rates The Rembrandt Hotel as “comfortable”. Somehow I assumed that even being listed in the Michelin Guide connoted standards. Perhaps the fact that renovations are taking place each day outside my ... read more

This year the annual Engineering Conference was held in London. Joe, Carol, Linda and I decided to drive there and spend a few days after the conference visiting the southern coast of England on the way home. On Monday we drove directly to London via the Calais to Dover ferry. After the business meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we were able to spend the evenings taking in some of the cultural aspects of London, including theater. Linda’s tourist passport was about to expire so we took advantage of being across from the U.S. Embassy to go there to renew it. The British guard at the entrance (the U.S. Marine was inside) looked at her about to expire passport and told her that the picture was not her. Linda was taken aback. Then he explained that ... read more

We have just returned from our holiday in Europe I thought I would upload some photos of my 1975 trip to Europe as well What surprised me was the photo of myself standing outside 10 Downing Street the official residence of the Prime Minister. In 1975 I was able to have my photo taken standing on the doortsep but in 2007 the area is bounded by a large security fence and police guards. Times really have changed In 2007 all we could do was to look through a high security fence... read more

Sunday February 13th - day 1. It is 7am on Sunday morning and I am too nervous to eat much breakfast. It is time to pack the rucksack with the final items and to use this opportunity to leave a few more items behind. Arrived at London Victoria train station at 9.15am which means it is only 45 minutes before the train leaves. Three of us are starting this journey - Michael (an old school friend from Bournemouth), Heather (his girlfriend) and myself. There are about 10 people standing on the platform to wave us goodbye - relatives and friends - who knows when we will see them again? We have reserved seats and in 12 hours time we will have arrived at our first destination Koblenz which is situated at the confluence of the Rhine ... read more

It is 41 years ago that I was sitting in my flat in London counting down the hours before my 4 month trip to Australia started. I guess it is the same for most people but chance played a big part. I had started a new job which did not live up to expectations as instead of career development, I was required to spend months learning the company ways starting at the bottom of the ladder. Luckily an Aussie girl was temping in the office and she created the desire to travel. My flatmates and I returned from the pub one night and there was an advert on TV for the £5 emigration package to Australia. We decided to investigate but by the time I had collected paperwork from the Aussie High Commission, the other three ... read more
