Friday We went to the mother of parliaments today. Got to sit in both the commons & lords. The lords had a labour (note spelling) lord speaking eloquently and coherently without notes. The commons had a conservative speaker who exemplified the typical English twit!!! What was interesting was the good natured banter which seems to have disappeared from our parliament. The houses of parlt are nearly 1000 years old. Interesting that the mother of parliaments has plaques on the floor indicating where both Charles 1 and William Wallace were brought to be sentenced to death. Maybe we needed all of those thousand years for parliamentary democracy to evolve. In turn we mock and rage against, and are disgusted by our politicians. They let us down with unerring regularity. They behave with a cynicism which is breathtaking ... read more

This morning because we were living like a local, I thought I might go for a run like a local. We are so close to Wimbledon Common that I just had to check it out. The journey there didn’t start to well as I got a little lost on the way. But thanks to the trusty GPS in my phone, I sorted that incident out and was back on track within minutes. I started to run around the Common, trying to decide when I should make the big leap into the unknown! A Common is essentially a big park but Wimbledon’s is massive! On top of that it also has a golf course and lots of little scrub tracks! Halfway around I entered the Common and immediately regretted it. I found myself running through bushland, over ... read more

The first thing we noticed was a lack of escalator’s and lifts to get around. We had to lug our luggage up and down really long flights of stairs just to get to the next platform. Then again at the next station. Our hotel in Notting Hill was vastly different from the ones in Japan with 3600 rooms. The distinct smell of cats piss in the foyer was welcoming. Blue Bells Hotel looks like it used to be a large house, 5 flights of stairs later and we were in our room. As the tube (subway) travels underneath the hotel, the whole thing shakes and reminds us of the start of Mary Poppins. It isn’t too bad tho, and it didn’t bother our sleep at all. Plus the tube doesn’t operate from midnight till around 5am. ... read more

Tog på Portobello Road markede idag. Mega fedt.

My backpack weighs 18kg, and I'm seriously wondering whether I could fit a little more in (without breaking my back). Ben the physio told me that my ankle will swell up again if I carry anything too heavy for too long, which could be quite exciting. I have got the same range of painkillers that you might find in an extremely well-stocked Boots though, just to be on the safe side. I had a lovely night last night, a few special people going down the pub. People keep on asking me if I'm excited, or if I'm nervous to be going on holiday alone for 3 months. To be honest, it still hasn't settled in. I'll probably only realise what's happening about 2 weeks before the end!! The past week has been quite hectic in terms ... read more

We had a fabulous time in Toronto thanks to Karen and Danielle, but we left the Canada cold for ... hmmm … more cold. The weather in London had taken a turn, in fact we were told numerous times that it was actually ‘adverse’ and would necessitate early shop closures, and cancelled trains and flights (we were lucky to get to London from Ireland and just as fortunate to get away). It became a running gag that the adverse weather conditions were the scapegoat for any and every misfortune. Cold soup? Adverse weather. Bad hair? Adverse weather. Lumpy bed? Adverse weather conditions! A particularly helpful shop girl was closing her much sought out boutique hours earlier than the times clearly printed on the door and when we inquired about why she repeated the same mantra and ... read more

Another big walking day in London. We took this morning from Pimlico to Victoria, then from Victoria to Notting Hill Gate and walked to Portobello Road for the antique market they have every Saturday. It was crazy! There were so many people there that it was difficult to look at the stalls, but it was fun nonetheless. I bought a little picture outside Alice’s and stopped to get some cupcakes at Hummingbird Bakery (Rose and Chocolate & Peanut Butter flavored…both the daily specials). We walked up one side of the street and back the other, and by the time we were heading back (about 11:30am), it was almost twice as busy as when we’d arrived (in other words, if you go, go early!). We took the tube from Notting Hill Gate to Marble Arch to get ... read more

Back in London after 6 months of absence. Thrilled to be here again, this time without having to worry about work, lesson plans, rent, hectic tube journeys etc. Landed at Luton airport on Friday afternoon and didn't get to do much that day. Woke up early on Saturday and met up with Monika, former flatmate and roamed about Portobello Road, which is the host of the world's largest antiques market. Couldn't wait to get my hands on a large Starbucks Caramel Frappucino that really made my day!!! :) Enjoy pictures with lovely sis, Monika and I ! ... read more

Hi Everybody! Today marks the fourth day in London. When I read in book that time expands when you travel I didn't really believe it, but it sure seems like I have been here more than 4 days. Yesterday I went on a bus tour that I signed up for at the visitors center. It cost 39 pounds which I thought was a good deal. I wanted to see Stonehenge. The tour I picked was for Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Bath. I found out when I showed up on the bus why it was so cheap. None of the admission prices were included in the price of the tour. So it cost an extra 20 pounds. I am very glad I went, but I would have been even more glad if it had only cost 39 pounds. ... read more
