It’s Sunday, 27 August. Gretchen and I just got back from church and ate lunch. While she is taking a nap, I’m going to type up this blog update. Later this afternoon/evening I’ll probably head back to the Radisson down the street and take advantage of their free wireless to upload this… Before I give you an update, I should clarify something that some of you have asked about. In addition to the photos that you see included with each blog entry (which you can click on to enlarge, by the way), there is a separate photo gallery on this blog site where you can see other pictures (such as the picture of the Loch Ness Monster that we posted last week). To access that gallery, just click on the “Gallery” icon at the top, above ... read more

Day 132: August 15 - morning flight Edinburgh to London, 5 hours at Heathrow, then to Bangkok Accommodation: overnight Qantas plane After hearing about the huge delays at Heathrow airport for everyone checking in for flights and loss of thousands of bags by luggage handlers, I decided the 2 hours given to me by Qantas to change flights at Heathrow would be pushing it for time to get my bags and myself from one flight to another, so I figured I'd go for a morning flight to give me a good 5 or 6 hours to get from one flight to the next. The last thing I wanted to do was arrive in Asia a day late or without my bags when I was just about to start another tour. Luckily Qantas was able to change ... read more

Just a note to let everyone know that I am NOT flying right now, even though my flight was to be in the air at this time. Due to a huge security threat, my flight was cancelled this morning. Thankfully, my friend Lauren got home to Greensboro late last night after visiting London and me for a week. A bit of background for those of you who aren't watching The Crawl on CNN: There have been 21 arrests, at this time, regarding people who were trying to take hand baggage onto flights and then cause explosions using low-tech devices they would assemble during at least six transatlantic flights. All airports here are completely overwhelmed as NO hand baggage is being allowed in the cabin. Everything except a wallet and passport must be checked. Nothing liquid is ... read more

No way this is it. But it didn't quite feel real until the conversation with the stern faced immigration officer at Vancouver airport went something like this; "How long are you staying in Canada?" (serious face) "14 Days." "then where are you going?" (still serious) "USA, Fiji, New Zealand, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan." "How long for?" (mellowing) "12 months." "so this is day one?" (big excited smile for us.) ... read more

Alright, Hi everyone!! I am extremely excited because I am leaving my home of NY to head overseas for the first time. Lets start from the beginning I guess. Last year all of my friends were doing something for Spring Break. However, we all had different Spring Breaks so I needed to find something I could do alone, but be with a group. Thats when I found Contiki. My travel agent told me this company is amazing and is extremely well-known. She told me to go home and check out their websites. She also gave me brochures and told me that she herself had been on one and it changed her life. I went home and checked out their site (www.contiki.com) I fell in love with everything. They are a company that really caters to each ... read more

Well, we are twiddling our thumbs in terminal three's departure lounge, anxious for the real bit of our journey to begin (boarding less than one hour). However, the first 16 hours since we left home have already been pretty tiring and less than luxurious...the only way is up right? Slept last night in the corner of a grubby part of the terminal near some computer games machines and workmen doing something that involved muchos banging (even through the earplugs!) Anyway, really looking forward to getting going and starting exploration of latin america. Better keep this short as this metal keyboard is impossible to type on. Will log on again soon. Hasta Luego!... read more

If you have ever seen the movie "Terminal" with Tom Hanks, you may remember the scene where he is shaving in the bathroom and another guy says "do you ever feel like your living in an airport?" Thats how me and my team feel right now. We are on the begining end of an allnighter before a 7:00 am flight to munich to get a connector to st petersburg! So im not sure how much sleep i'll get or anything, but we'll soon see i suppose. This week has been sort of transitional, i feel like i am ready to go to st petersburg btu they have been putting us through cultural training that is pretty important, so i guess i had to wait. I dont really like travel to much either ( the airport part) ... read more
