We have made it ok to London and have had a busy first few days. On Tuesday (23/9) we visited Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the London Eye. It was very tiring but fun. On Wednesday we went to the Tower of London. It was interested to see the history of this building. We also saw St Pauls cathedral. Today we went to the Britsh museum and saw plenty of history from ancient Egypt, Greece and more. We also saw Hamleys toy store which was 5 levels full of toys. We are off to meet the Rokers in Essex tomorrow and then will head to Whitby. Will update my blog again soon. Cheers Max. ... read more

So, the Old Me won a huge battle last week. I was meant to be in Germany this week, but OM went into a panic about the ever growing list of things to do and decided to stay home to get them done. To my credit, they are all done and OM is resting quietly (for the time being). New Me, frustrated that I couldn't bring myself to leave, kicked in yesterday and decided that some fun was due. It all started with a trip to the cinema. As odd as it sounds, I never go anymore. I reckon that £8/$16 for something that will be out on video in a few weeks is just something that I am not interested in. However, I am extraordinarily interested in James Bond and Mr. Darcy. Put the two ... read more

A rather long (24hrs 15mins) but not too arduous flight with plenty of tasty food as well - that's got to be a bonus for airline cuisine! Pickup driver met me easily and the homestay is with a down to earth couple. The room is SMALL but heh, I only want to sleep there. Slept for only a few hours on the plane - the seat beside me was empty - a small luxury there. So I'm out and about - bought ticket to this evenings 'Spamalot' Monty Python production at the palace theatre 5.15pm and then to sleep! Tomorrow is the Big Red Bus tour of London - jump on, jump off - and a river cruise to boot. Trafalgar Square is teeming with tourists and I'm one of them. The National Portrait Gallery calls ... read more

My adventure did not start off as planned but it is finally back on track. On the way to london the plane's engine broke down mid take off and we where unable to leave dullas until the next day, which ment hanging around the hotel and airport all waiting for the next flight. After all was said and done i made it to london a day late. My mother and grandmother meet me here and we had a great day yesterday. We didnt do the usual sights although i could attually see big ben, westmister and the london wheel if i suck my head far enough out of my hotel room window. We spent our time going around all the markets and street vendors that are around the city on sundays. Then i spent the rest ... read more

I’ve often wondered what it must be like to hear a great piece of music the first time it is performed. What must the crowds have been thinking the first time they heard Handel’s “Messiah”, or Mozart’s “Requiem”, or Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” or “Carmen”? (Well, actually, in the latter case, the critics were so bad that they drove Bizet to an early grave. Yet another reason I take them all with a pinch of salt.) Tonight, I got to be in one of those crowds. The Royal Opera House is putting on a brand new opera called “The Minotaur”. Tonight was its third showing, so I had to go along and see it. The critics have been positive, but the reviews talk in very technical terms about the music. I wouldn’t know an F flat if ... read more

Detail of Chinese Tile in the British Museum Let me start - at the end, of our trip to London. It's spring time, April 6, daffodils and tulips are blooming, the trees are budding. And then, we wake up to snow! Big fat floaty flakes of snow! Not much accumulation at all, but enough to delay our flights so that we are 20 hours late getting back into Krakow. When is it going to be warm sunny weather?... ...Anyway. Yes, back to the beginning of our trip, spring, London, Covent Garden. So many cafes, pubs, boutiques, what a great, but crowded place Covent Garden is. The street into the market was impassable, crammed with the street performers and shoppers and tourists, and this was on a weekday. The street entertainers were really working for their pay. ... read more

I arrived in London exhausted and excited with trepidation for the task I had at hand: see all of London in one day. My flight landed at 7am and my first overseas experience was of course making it through immigration. Standing in the "non-UK resident" line (or que as they call it in London) it dawned on me that people; regardless of race, gender, age, etc. are simply a citizen of a foreign country if you are traveling internationally. It doesn't matter if you were born on the wrong side of the tracks or which ethnicity box you checked off on your employment application. I had been compacted down to a few simple facts: my name is Heather Hampton, I am a US born citizen, and that's my picture to prove it. I took the subway, ... read more

Here we are on the last trip we took together. Evidently, Erik won the coin toss and I got to huff and puff my way up some mountain. Now that we have been married thirty, count 'em - 30 - years, I got to choose the trip. We're on our way to London for a long weekend and then to Paris for a whole week!... read more

Mom and I had a leisurely morning at Deb, Tim and Phoebe's house. We watched the cats, Moose and Maverick, play both inside and outside, had our tea and breakfast, then decided it was time to head to town. We caught the 10:55 am train from New Marlow to Waterloo station. Once we reached London we took a nice walk from Waterloo station to Stephen's office across the Waterloo bridge on Kingsway. We left our luggage with Stephen, then headed out to visit Covent Gardens (no gardens there - just shopping!) We found some lovely gifts for Christmas and birthday presents. Once our arms were full of gifts we dropped them by the office. Then we decided we were done walking and ready to go for a quick tour. So we hopped on a double-decker bus ... read more

When my leader group said me that we will go to Covent Graden I imagined a big and beautiful garden, but when we arrived in Covent Graden I was surprised, I didn't see some tree or some flower, it was very strange. We went to London to shop, and I think that it's very bored, because I think that we can visit a lot of places in London, and no go shopping all the day because when is your first time you want see different places and not comercial centres. The trip to London is very very long, about four hours and half to go and the same to comeback, and we were in London only three hours, so I think that we can go to others places. Well, when we, or they, finished their ... read more
