Wow!I slept 12 hours. Kim and I had a busy day ... many errands to run before we leave tomorrow at "o dark hundred" as Kim says. I think we have to leave at 6:30 a.m. and NO later. I'll be up at 6:00 and ready at 6:30 a.m. Low maintenance!! Tomorrow I'll start taking pics and uploading to this blog. We fly to Cairo and should get to the hotel around 5:00 p.m. We have lots of reading material ... all the do's and dont's of traveling in that part of the world. Wendy is worried about Kim's hair .... but we have shawls to cover ourselves with as needed. It will definitely be an experience. Next time I write I'll be an Egypt. Still seems strange to think I'm going to Egypt! ... read more

Well as I mentioned to you all in one of my English corners it is important that the groom has a 'Stag party' My friend Tom's party was last Friday and I spent a lot of the week organising it. In the old days a stag party was usually held the night before a wedding and the groom, best man and his friends would go to the local pub and drink lots of beer and simply walk home. However it has now become BIG business all over the world. We were pushed for time and therefore we had to hold it just over one day. Nearly all of the people attending came from London so this seemed the natural choice. I left my small quiet respectable village at 11:00 a.m on Friday morning and came back ... read more

We travelled down on the train from Nottingham to London today. We are at Macdonalds at the moment having a quick lunch before we go to the Lyceum theatre to see the Lion King. ...later... On the way to the theatre we went through Trafalgar Square, then down Whitehall looking in at No. 10, but you can't really see it these days because it is surrounded by police and ramps and railings. Then along the banks of the Thames and back into theatreland. After the show, which was excellent, we had tea at TGI fridays, which included a massive hotdog, worm and dirt pie, and some other more conventional items. Then a walk down the Mall and through the park to Buckingham palace before catching the tube for our train home. The train was not delayed, ... read more

In September of 2008, Stephanie came to Europe for a vacation. Her first stop was London, and on her first night here, she went to a bar called Henry's, in Covent Garden, and met Dean. Tonight, we gather with friends and family at Henry's to celebrate their engagement. This is a beautiful area of London, with lots of cute shops and restaurants and cobblestoned squares. Henry's is a nice bar, with a big downstairs, which is where we sit on leather couches, enjoying the fingers foods and wine. We have hummus, pita bread, olives, stuffed peppers, little cold fishes, french bread, feta cheese, brie cheese, some warm Greek cheese with spices in it, and a couple other kinds. Catherine sits beside me and quickly asks, "So what's the deal with your students? Steph said you called ... read more

Imagine This I'm on my way to see another West End musical, a new one, called Imagine This. The night is cold, but refreshing, and the streets are packed with shoppers and people who are glad for a weekend. I stop at a bookstore to browse. (Bookstores are addicting, I tell you! I could spend HOURS!) I walk out of the bookstore with Barack Obama's second book, The Audacity of Hope, which is the number one bestseller in the UK right now. I feel proud of my president-elect and curious about some more of his ideas. I read while I wait for the show to start. Imagine This is set in 1942 in Polish ghetto. The openning song is happy, celebrating the bounties of life and an everyday people's simple pleasures. The song ends with gunshots, ... read more

I just got back from London! It was really fun. We took the Eurostar (like the TGV) from Gare du Nord through the chunnel to St. Pancras/King's Cross. Our original train was canceled but they put us on the next one. I loved it! The train was great: not much leg room, but watching out the window was awesome. Only in Europe do you look out into a cow pasture and see ol' Bessie munching on some grass next to a ruin of a 15th century castle. Crazy stuff. Greta (a UPS mate) met us at the station and we booked it to the theater. Greta had found cheap tickets to Spamalot. The theater was beautiful and we had amazing seats. They were just a few rows up from the stage and near center. The play ... read more
