Last summer I mentioned visiting Alnwick, the small city north of Newcastle with a famous castle that appeared in the first Harry Potter film. On my way back from Wooler, I stayed in a hostel in town for one night. I didn't do much, just read a book in their famously-gigantic bookstore and walked around the marketplace. Alnwick is definitely a good place to visit, especially the castle and the gardens, but one day is plenty of time. Still, the hostel is nice (apart from their 15 minutes of free wifi) and I'm glad I got to see the castle one last time, even if I didn't go in. The castle from the bridge behind the grounds.
