After our trip to Paris we went down to Kington Magna near Gillingham to visit friends for the day. We went via Stonehenge which the mob were disappointed with as they thought it looked a lot bigger in photos. The narrow lanes with high hedges around Kington Magna fascinated them as they worried how two vehicles could pass each other. They loved the 17th century cottages which have been renovated but kept all their period charm. The 14th century church on the top of the hill behind the village set the stage for a lovely day in the english countryside & we were lucky the weather was kind. The aussie mob were blown away by all the memorabilia our friends have accumulated over the years & how it all blends in with the low ceilings & ... read more

Spent a delightful week in Dorset with Lynne and her sister, Jayne. We stayed in a olde worlde thatch cottage on the Athelhampton House Estate, not far from Dorchester. Being so near the coast I did a couple of days walking two stretches of the South West Coast Path. The first stretch was from West Bay to Charmouth which entailed a hike up two very steep cliffs; the first Thorncombe Beacon and then after recovering from that a steep hike up Golden Cap, the highest point on the South Coast at 626 feet. As you will see from the photographs the views were spectactular from both especially on such a sunny day The weather on the second day of walking was pretty miserable and the walk from West Bay to Abbotsbury was a bit tedious during ... read more

Hello to one and all, I doubt this is anyone at this stage because no one has details of this blog. I'm using the small Dorset village I grew up in to give the trip a start and get familiar with the format here. Bear with me, well not yet, but maybe in a American national park (pun intended). I will now attempt to enclose a photo or two to get this on the road.... read more

Perthamina has had an exciting trip on her own. We left her in Tortola, after a few weeks in the virgin islands. A company there called island yacht management agreed to deliver her to the ship in St Thomas . First they had to relaunch her, and then anchor off for a night before she was loaded. They were excellent. The ship, the Snoeckgracht, went to Rhode Island first and then 10 days later we were told by Peters and May that the boat was arriving on the 23rd. It was really odd to see our boat perched on top of a ship, but soon got on board, all seemed fine. We checked that everything was working, including the navigation lights and engine, then watched all the ot her boats being carefully lifted into the water. ... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Weymouth, Dorset, UK: 138.7 miles one way 30 April-1 May 2011 On this bank holiday weekend, we decided to ride to the seaside town of Weymouth, just to see what it's like. We left Peckham on Saturday morning in nice weather. No incident on the journey, with a stop on the motorway for breakfast (as usually). Shortly before arriving in Weymouth, we spotted the famous Dorset landmark of the White Horse on the hills of Osmington. In Weymouth we found a guest house near the harbour called Whadham House that was comfortable and quiet. After changing clothes, we set out to visit the waterfront of Weymouth. We walked along the busy beach and finished the afternoon with a drink by the ha... read more

A big THANK YOU to all of you who helped to make our Farewell do on Saturday so special! It was lovely to be surrounded by close friends and family although it did serve as a reminder for what we'll miss! :-( It all started to feel pretty real on Saturday and all very exciting - we know so many of you will be following our travels and that means a lot to us. We're also looking forward to a great "Welcome home" party in the Hogs again!!! (you have been warned!!) We've spent the week so far packing up the house and filling the attic, which Gordon pointed out that I'd emptied (of stuff!) only to fill it up (with stuff!) again! I'm sure I'll regret not being more ruthless when we come back! ... read more
