No, I have not gone home just yet, simply visited the Devon version of my home town. This blog is basically for my parents and friends who grew up in Torquay so I apologise to the rest of you for the many local references that you may not fully appreciate. Torquay is part of the area known locally as the "British Riviera". Well, having not been to the French version, I cannot comment on the accuracy of this claim but I think it may be a stretch. The town itself reminded me more of an even further commercialised version of Lorne rather than the Torquay of my youth. For example, Torquay has a casino! The interesting thing for me was that St Luke’s church dominated the skyline from the beach. Torquay, Victoria’s version of St Luke's ... read more

Been in Croyde for just over 1 week now and so far so good. Moved down on Sunday 18th and was greeted by 2-3ft onshore messy waves and cloudy weather. This can't be right, where are the 6ft barrels and sunshine?? Decided that i had to go in for a surf anyway, so hooked up with some of the guys from the surf school and had a pretty good surf considering the conditions. Pitched my tent at the only site in the area doing long stay, which was a bit of a drive out of Croyde on top of a big hill. The facilities were pretty basic, and the tent was blowing all over the place due to the howling winds, but i got a my head down and had a good sleep ready for my ... read more

It´s now under a week until David and I leave for South America and we are still doing many last minute prepartions. We had our halls summer ball last night which was really good fun and we were feeling the effects of heavy drinking and wild dancing this morning. This is a very long process as trying to plan for three months takes a lot. so here is a quick over view of how our trip is shaping up ... read more

(Auch auf Deutsch geschrieben, unter) Well, it is the start of my mission to master Russian and have a good time along the way. I'm currently in the middle of exam period at the end of my second year at Manchester University and I've come home for a week. OK, so the travelling hasn't started for real yet, but I'm getting excited and the real travel will begin soon.... So here's the plan: I'm flying back up to Manchester on monday and then I'll be driving back on saturday before flying to Luxembourg via London to my job. Plan is to work there until september, when I shall have 2 days at home here to sort my head out before I leave for Tallinn in Estonia. I'm going to spend 4 nights there then catch the ... read more

Greetings, all! Ten days until liftoff, planned for May 20, and we've created a rough map of our intended destinations, available at the following site: http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_1a8.html Meanwhile we are making art in Devon, having created a Living Sofa out of turf grass and dandelions, and installed a Living Room for Birds, during a treeclimbing performance by Richard. Malaika danced solo with houseplants during her performance of Living Plants, all in collaboration with visiting Chinese artist Liu Ding, who curated an gallery exhibit called "Noah's Living Room" at Dartington. Images of these will hopefully follow soon. Our Living Sofa is catching sunshine and rain daily outside the gallery at Dartington, as well as attracting a number of interested visitors. Daisies, bittercress, sorrel and moss are doing well... the birdhouse is just the right size for a fami ... read more

Landed in Woodbury, Devon to stay overnight with friends. had a meal out in Exmouth - can recommend the Wetherspoons Pub - delicious grub. On Saturday carried on to Brixham - a truly delightful seaside town, complete with whelks, mussells, fish, freshly caught!Yummmmmy. Stayed at Pontins for 3 nights - great entertainment - completely free! Weather so hot for UK that I got sunburnt. What do the sounds of melting ice, growing grass and buzzing flies have in common? They're all the internal workings of "Noah's Living Room," the collaborative artist-in-residence gallery exhibition co-curated by Xiaoqian and Liu Ding, Chinese artists at Dartington College of Arts. Huge plastic flies (made from water bottles) flying by hitching lifts on a ceiling fan, a tiny grass hillside festooned with fairy-sized red living room furniture is piled in one corner, and the violets blooming on it are still vibrant. A living turf carpet is greening up the center of the room. A huge cylinder of ice is suspended by chains from the ceiling and is, drip by drip, displacing a field of sand smoothly laid out below it. A bookshelf-full collection of Chinese dynasty histories are slowly turning red as a pool of ... read more
