As Doug's Grandma Winnie was 100 years old on 7th May we were certainly not going to miss out on the party and seeing her on this special occassion so we planned and schemed along with my dad, Doug's mum Ann and Dad John (poor Ann nearly had a breakdown trying to keep our visit a secret!) for the past 6 months that we were going to go home and join in and surprise everyone at the same time!!! We arranged for my dad's friend Paula to come out to Oz along with her husband Andy and little girl Lulu for a holiday to look after the dogs (after the effects of quarantine on the dogs could never put them in kennels again!) so that we could fly home and we set off on 30th April ... read more

A nastalo druhe volne pindeli, tzv.Bank Holiday Monday - tri dny volna. Nezbyvalo nez si pujcit pojizdne bydleni a doufat, ze me nekde v kempu nechaji v aute prespat.

After reading endless reports and getting teased with amazing pictures in Trail magazine of Striding Edge i finally got my taste of this classic lake land climb. Chris aka Darksky form the UKwalkingforum joined me on this walk. We had previously stayed the night at a cold Swirral camping bairn close to Glenridding, it was basic but well worth the £7 a night charge. We set off early around 8:30 following the track up towards Red Tarn, our first glimpse of the Helvellyn range came when Catseye Cam popped its head over the hill line. Soon we were at Red Tarn and revelling in the amazing sight of a snow topped Helvellyn flanked on both sides by Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. After a quick brew sponsored by Jetboil we made the decision to tackle Striding ... read more

Thomas and Leanne joined me a weekend camping trip to the Lakes, our destination Hollows Farm @ Grange in Borrowdale. We arrived early and quickly pitched my new tent the North Face Tadpole 23, which i can now confirm is officially the best tent on the planet lol. 2 adults and a 3 yr old child managed to fit in it which was quite surprising. once the tent was up we headed for a car park just North of Skeghill bank. It started to pur down with rain but luckily for Thomas we had his all in one waterproof Spotty Otter suit. Myself and Leanne were drenched in our cheapo gear. We reached the top of Skeghill bank (the 1st hump on Catbells) quite easily and gave Thomas a well deserved rest. The rain continued and ... read more

Well we didn’t get a white Christmas but we DID get a white easter! We spent the easter weekend up in the Lakes District….lots of fun even if the weather was a little cold. The first night was extremely windy and we wondered if Clancy would stay upright but she made it through - not like the piles of broken tents in the camping ground the next morning. The following nights were a little calmer and we were amazed to wake up to snow on the second morning. We spent one day following a mountain bike trail that we had found in an old guide book. Needless to say some of the trail sections had changed in the last fifteen years and we found ourselves riding a lot further than we originally anticipated. Either that or ... read more

Travelled up to the Lakes District, and specifically Patterdale (with Ullswater), this weekend. Woke up at ridiculous o'clock (id est half 5) and got up to our campsite around 10ish near a small lake called Brothers Water at the head of the valley. Charlie, Martin and I set off once our pitch was secured (although didn't put the tents up then), up Scandale Pass to Dove Crag and Hart Crag. It was pretty cold, around -1 or -2 degrees Celsius I would think. There was still snow and plenty of frost on the tops. Didn't like standing around for too long nor taking off the gloves because of the wind chill and coldness. Martin and Charlie were on photo duties; the best ones are of the icicles that had formed on the posts and the grasses. ... read more

Bleary-eyed, I gazed blankly through the dusty windows, trying to imprint the Scottish scenery on my retinas as I travelled south once more. It seemed the early morning dash to get myself on the bus had used up my quota of energy for the time being, and I lost the struggle to prop my eyes open - although a dazzling play of light on the insides of my eyelids alerted me to take a peek when passing tourist hotspot Loch Lomond, alight in a blaze of sunshine as the bus strobed through the trees along the lakeside. I swapped bus for train after an hour's wait in Glasgow, where a commuting Scotsman admired my journal, with all the "wee headin's and that." I continued writing on the train, but was absently watching the countryside slip away ... read more

At last I am back on my computer and able to finish transferring the remaining photos of the wonderful trip we had with our friends Jean and Judy. After leaving the wall section we drove into Carlisle and had a look around. We ended up finding a nice place for some lunch and had a look about the city. We walked over to the Castle but with time against us and rain starting to fall we voted to continue on heading home to Stamford, but with a slight detour via The Lakes District as suggested by Jean. Well it was well worth it, in spite of the congested roads due to it being a long week end, I think you will agree when you see the photos, and really they just don't do the views justice. ... read more

Settling In - Thursday Well, it’s late Friday evening and the entire camp is set up and ready to go! The advance party arrived Thursday at 3.30pm and began the difficult task of building a tented village for over 50 of us. By the time it was dark, most of the canvas was up, we had electric power for lights and refrigeration and the chemical toilets were fully primed and raring to go. Getting ready for Tomorrow - Friday Friday morning saw the completion of the camp, running water and washing facilities installed and we began to build the climbing wall. The wall was completed by tea-time (a record), thanks to Sellars and Andy for that. The “main” party arrived at lunch-time and were shown to their tents, almost everyone on camp now. The afternoon saw ... read more
