Inspired by our two peaks challenge the previous year, we took another trip back to the lake District, this time for the slightly more “sensible” option of an 8 hour day walk that summited five peaks and was described as “Very Hard with strenuous climbs and descents” by the website we found the walk on! Unfortunately, Fleur and Ed weren't able to make it this year, but Mandi and I did rope in Steve, James and Sarah so as a quintet we headed north. James had done brilliantly to find a stunning campsite in Great Langdale run by the gruffest northern farmer I could imagine. It had great facilities, a river flowing through the lower end of the site and even more incredible a breakfast van that opened up on Saturday and Sunday mornings to feed ... read more

Via Ferrata means Iron Way in Latin and usually consists of fixed steel lines stretched across mountains and hammered into the rock at regular points. Typically these lines are build into steep or exposed sections rock, making it much easier for people to traverse the mountain. You simply have to tie yourself in to the fixed lines, and then scramble across and up the mountain, knowing that if you lose your grip you are safely held in. The best known Via Ferrata are in the Dolomites in Italy. Many of these were built in WW2 by Italian soldiers as a quick means of navigating through the mountains, though in more recent times they have been used for adventure sports. Every year they attract huge numbers of people keen to try it out or to experience the ... read more

Scotland over, time to continue my August tour of the UK and to be even handed decided to stay in Englands this weekend and head up to the Lake District in Cumbria with Dee who I travelled with in Turkey and Paul and Rach/Danny and Eva who we met on our Turkish boat cruise. I love the way a couple of days with people when travelling leads to ongoing friendships and trips elsewhere in the world. Dee and I jumped a train on Friday afternonn to Runcorn where Paul collected us so we could collect Rach in St Helens before doing the run up to the beautiful Langdale Valley just north of Ambleside and Lake Windemere in the Lake District. We arrived latish, pitched our tent in the first spot we could find then walked to ... read more

Yay, the internet is working this morning so we have been able to load the first three days of our travel blog. We are really impressed with how easy it is to load and how straightforward it is to include photos! The weather is a bit better today. Still overcast first thing, but at least it is not raining anymore! First stop this morning was Stagshaw Garden, a National Trust property in Ambleside. The rhododendrons in the gardens are still quite spectacular although a little bit past their best. The views down over Lake Windermere were fabulous especially since the sun has actually started to shine. From the gardens we drove to another NT property, Townend House at Troutbeck only a few minutes away from Ambleside. Townend is a remote stone farmhouse with a slate roof, ... read more

Oh dear, still wet this morning!! The plan was to take some great photos of the lakes during this visit, but they look very drab and uninteresting in these weather conditions! We decided that we would head to Cockermouth to visit Wordsworth’s birthplace. However, the house where he was born doesn’t open until 11.00am so we needed to fill in some time. We decided to drive over to the coast and do a bit of a loop back to Cockermouth to fill in an hour or so. We drove straight past Cockermouth on the A66 to Workington and then headed up the coast to Maryport where we were the first visitors of the day at the Stenhouse Roman Museum. The museum has a very impressive collection of altar stones from the old Roman fort and a ... read more

We really enjoyed our stay at Lowther House (13 Inkerman Terrace, Whitehaven). We had a good sized room and a huge ensuite bathroom. And this morning we discovered that the shower was to die for!! We both enjoyed very long showers without feeling guilty about it. We were extremely well fed at breakfast finally having to pass on the croissants after we had already consumed cereal, full English breakfast and toast!! Mind you this ‘boutique accommodation’ came with a reasonably hefty £70/night price tag! After breakfast we headed back down the coast to Ravenglass with plans to see the Roman ruins and Muncaster castle. Unfortunately the weather has taken a turn for the worse and it was wet today so we drove down the coast in the rain. We arrived in Ravenglass and could not find ... read more

Day 24 Grasmere to Carlisle 42 miles (746) A rather grey and misty start to the day busy up Dunmail rise above Grasmere but by the time I reached the top the sun was starting to appear and it opened up into a fine day. A short descent before the cycle route followed the engineers' route around the west of Thirlmere - very pleasant and easy as the five or six miles had been engineered to be almost completely level! Some fine views across the lake and as the mist finally burnt off a view up to the summit of Helvellyn . After crossing the dam the route follwoed the B road up to Threlkeld , this time with emerging views of Skiddaw and Blencathra. A short but very pleasant section of the Coast to ... read more

Day 140 A three day weekend, we caught the evening train Thursday to Windemere, the heart of the Lakes district considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in England. We arrived at 11.00 pm after we missing our connecting train. We checked in to the Lakes District Backpackers, an innovative non-staffed but clean backpackers, and we hit the only local restaurant open this late at night, the Chinese Dragon. The food was sensational hence we reminicsed last years trip to China. Day 141 Carly’s 25th Birthday, Unfortunately it was yet another grey English summer day, but that didn't dull the mood as there was so much to see, do and eat...
