Nicola’s brother who is also called Ryan came up for the weekend from Preston. He had a late bender on the Saturday but had already made the mistake of telling his Dad Frank that he wanted to go for a walk on the Sunday. Therefore in a hungover state he came with Nicola, Frank and I up a mountain called Caw. I thought we had lost him at one stage, but he was just having a quick power nap. It is hard work keeping up with Frank who is super fit and will think nothing of biking 60 odd miles in a day. I think Ryan brightened up when we stopped off at Frank’s favourite pub The Prince of Wales in Foxfield. They make their own beers and do really tasty peach and strawberry beers amongst ... read more

The next morning we woke up early to get the days drive out of the way. We drove into Ambelside to get some Beatrix Potter related presents for people, it is a sweet little town much ruined by the tourist hoards that we saw queuing up for miles to get on on our way out. We felt very relieved for having missed them. That day we drove down to Stratford upon Avon in the Cotswolds, arriving in Warwick mid afternoon. The town was busy, things seem to heat up along with the weather at around 2-3pm in England and so tourists and locals were crawling all over the streets by the time we arrived. We parked a short way out of town in a field and walked over a bridge offering a splendid view of ... read more

The next to visit were Mum and Dad, who came to see all 3 of us kids, and to travel around Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The weather was a bit lousy so we did plenty of driving around checking out the scenic Lakes District. For you kiwis reading, I think it is quite similar to the area around Wanaka in places. We visited a castle in Ambleside (where Beatrix Potter the author used to spend holidays as a kid), the Hoad monument in Ulverston, Lake Windermere and the area around Newby Bridge. Another afternoon we took time out from watching Wimbledon on the TV (my mum is addicted to watching tennis) to go to the Barrow dock museum. If you don’t know Barrow has a large shipyard and a company called BAE systems which make the ... read more

I have had the whole family visiting in various stages of late. Firstly my brother Todd and his girlfriend Rachel made the trip up from Wigan. He is a cricket pro down there and Rachel was over visiting. My sister Jaimee has made the big move from NZ with her boyfriend Joel and is now living in London. She decided to kill two birds with one stone, or more simply put: see two brothers in one visit. It was great to catch up on each others news and was hard to believe that it had been a year since I had seen Jaimee. On one of the days we stocked up on sweets (Jaimee is addicted) and climbed up a mountain in the Lake District - Coniston Old Man to be precise.Todd and Rachel headed off ... read more

I had never been to the Lake District before this trip but was very pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The trip was 6 days, but the first and last were basically driving up from London and driving back, so we only really had 4 full days there. After arriving in the early evening at the campsite in Glenridding (near Ullswater) we put up our tent which then decided to go a bit wrong as the porch pole broke. But we managed and went off to the pub for dinner. The next morning (day 1 proper) we set off from the campsite uphill and followed an amazing hike up into the hills, along striding edge and up onto Helvellyn (3rd highest mountain in England - 951m). The views from the top were spectacular, although it ... read more

Thursday Picked up the hire car today, we went to a dingy office with 2 russian guys who filled out the paperwork, then a third russian, a "colleague", who was waiting around the corner with the motor running, took us to pick up the car. We went through this seedy looking run down industrial area, narrow laneways and then under a bridge where there were hundreds of cars in the semi darkness. Another "colleague" showed us the car, we had to change it because the cigarette lighter didn't work in the first, we needed it for the TomTom. Added 3/4 tank of fuel at the local service station, $100 later, (fuel is about $2.50/litre). We headed off through inner London, blindly following the TomTom directions, it worked beautifully, we'd have been lost without it, literally. ... read more

UntitledGeoff BurtEverything went well regarding the current car hire and we've now reached the Lakes District of England not far south of Scotland on the west coast. Today we went on a full day mini-bus tour around the area and we don't remember any of todays views from when we were here in 1976. Old farts like us have bad memories! The views were spoiled by the first day of rain we've had, but you can't have everything. The rain was not heavy, but constant. The scenery is not unlike the Scottish Highlands but just as memorable.... read more

Unbelievably despite 2 excellent weather days on Good Friday and Easter Saturday the sun continued to shine on Easter Sunday. Even though the legs weren't feeling great I decided that this may be the beginning and end of the Cumbrian summer and should make the most of it. Boots on then and off I went from the village of Hartsop near Ullswater. It would be an understatement to say that the first half an hour was tough. Whilst the path ascended with a not unreasonable gradient my legs had clearly had enough and it was a battle to keep going the motivation deteriorating as the clouds threatened. I struggled up to Hayeswater which glistened invitingly below High Street the major summit of the day at 828m. From hayeswater the route ascends steeply to join the ... read more

The coniston fells attract a huge amount of visitors. Easter weekend is notoriously bad. Scrambling book in hand I was off to find a different route and keep away from the crowds. The route started up Walna Sca road turning off to head towards goats water. By this point I was already feeling battered in the mediteranean temperatures being experienced in the great north west of england. The legs having not seen daylight for many a month beamed a brilliant white that even persil would have been proud of. I slogged past the inevitable large groups and admired the climbers clinging to Dow crag. The scramble leaves the route to goats water as the path turns left to ascend numerous rocky outcrops en route to the summit. The route is ideal for beginners each rock ... read more
