After a 20 minute drive over the Honister Pass, I set off from the Rosthwaite car park, heading west to a walled track which ultimately led to a footbridge over the Derwent. Whilst the river was not high, the ground was a little waterlogged and the midges and mosquitoes were having a field day. Following the river, I arrived in High Hows Wood and the site of a disused quarry. The cave just off the path was once someone's home although that individual would have to have been very hardy to stand the weather of late. Continuing along the path, I came out at Gowder Dub, where Broadslack Gill meets the Derwent. This beautiful open stretch of water provided a welcome coffee stop, ducks playing in the rough water. Coffee over, I took the footpath towards ... read more

Arrived in the wet for a few days in Buttermere. The forecast wasn't great but then again, if you wait for decent weather in the UK, you'd never get out. Started this walk with a clockwise circuit of Buttermere and walking as far as the village. Then, in a break in the weather, entered the woods surrounding Mill Beck and climbed up, eventually reaching open country. A short, steep climb then led to a grassy path heading up to the eastern end of Low Bank. The weather was getting better all the time, although a wind was blowing. Walking along the ridge to Rannerdale Knotts afforded great and extensive views taking in Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater, as well as the Solway Firth and Scotland. Lunch was taken at the summit of Rannerdale Knotts, before beginning ... read more

After yesterday's wet walking, I opted for a more exciting walk offering great views across Buttermere and Ennerdale, particularly as the weather was clear ... and forecast to stay clear (albeit with heavy showers in the afternoon!) Set off in the early morning sunshine, blue sky above, golden rays striking the mountain tops, taking the lake walk towards Gatesgarth Farm. The views were very picturesque along the lake shore in the early light, particularly after the earlier rain. Stopping outside Gatesgarth Farm to remove an outer layer, I concluded that, although the temperature was only 6°C, walking in the sun’s rays was making me warmer than intended. Continuing beyond the farm gates, I veered through a gate and began to follow the track used previously by slate miners. On their ascent, the miners, like me, would ... read more

Mountain weather forecast was not good and revised for the worst first thing in the morning to indicate cloud below 600m and occasionally below 300m. As a result, decided to change my plans regarding ascent as the summits would be in cloud. Set off into the rain, head bowed against the wind, making for the lakeside path. Despite the rain and low cloud, what could be seen of the mountains was nevertheless spectacular. Arrived at end of Pike Rigg hoping to take the path around the end of Buttermere but, due to nesting Sand Pipers, the path was closed - until June! Not a good start to the walk, as the detour was three times longer than the planned route - though admittedly less wet! Eventually reached the end of the diversion and crossed the footbridge ... read more

Happy New Year and January marches on so I better get up to date before I start my travels for 2012. In early December I set off for the North of England ( with a flasks of hot tea, blankets, shovel and bag of ashes in the boot in case of a repeat of last year’s weather- fortunately I didn’t need them). On the way I picked up Marilyn and Terry who had left behind their home in sunny warm Spain for the family pre-Xmas visit. I think they like being here for a winter visit to remind them of why they left!! We spent that week in the Lake District at Chapel Stile in the Langdale Valley- this is a timeshare apartment I have. We were lucky to have cold frosty days and snow on ... read more

The alarm went off early this morning as planned so we could get a good start to the day. We had decided only a few days ago, to take a train trip to Settle from Carlisle. For those who are not really interested in trains this little trip crosses the Yorkshire Dales and at one point we stop at the highest mainline railway station in the United Kingdom. So the reason for the early start was to find our way into Carlisle, park the car, buy the tickets, and get the best seats on the train. We looked around the carriage and it was an interesting collection of passengers. A small group were on a day’s outing to help celebrate someone’s 80th birthday. Quite a number were equipped for a day or a weekend of rambling ... read more

The trip to Lake district was no less than an adventure. My friends and I planned for a weekend getaway to Lake District. We started a little late from Nottingham on a Saturday morning. While on the highway, the Tomtom ( GPS navigation system) started giving trouble. We thought we were on the wrong route, but somehow kept navigating towards Lake District. Sometime around noon, the car broke down in the middle of the road and wouldn’t start. Amongst us, those who knew about cars, looked into everything that could have possibly gone wrong. Since they couldn’t figure out much, one of us called the car rental customer care and reported the problem. I do not remember what exactly they said, but help did not arrive. We were stranded there unaware of what to do next. ... read more

Blackpool Making our way from the Peaks to the Lakes, we stopped via Jo's number one must-go UK destination - Blackpool. And there it was, in all it's glory... a permanent seaside amusement town, with customary promenade and pier and plenty of hotel accommodation everywhere. We're thankful that it was only a weekday and not middle of the summer holidays! And a visit to such a place wouldn't have been complete without fish & chips and sugared donuts, which we willingly obliged. Lake District We were staying on the west side of the Lakes District, away from the reportedly touristy Windermere. This meant in order to get to our new residence, we had to get our tiny little car around all the tight, single-lane roads, complete with blind-spot on almost every corner. We also had to ... read more

right before the worst snowfall (in 17 years in the uk) we drove over to the lakes, for a route survey, to check out the condition of some snow and ice routes on the mountain called "Great End", Again we got used to carrying our loaded packs, which seem to get heavier with every hour that passes. We planned to go up to the top of Scafell, (highest mountain in England) but we did not have crampons or an ice axe with us so it was a little stupid to go over 850m. i am just awaiting delivery of my sportiva mountaineering boots and we plan to go back over to the lakes (if the roads ever re-open). When we returned to yorkshire we managed to get out again and walk 13km in deep snow with ... read more
