No longer do I need to take photos of English showers and ask a NASA graduate to interpret the buttons, switches, knobs and dials! They all seem to work now. Some have been really good, strong pressure and almost infinitely adjustable. The only grumble is that with some you can not get just cold water. I always attempt a cold shower for my legs because it’s good for them but it’s not always possible. But we’ll done England your showers have improved immeasurably. But they are still small! I didn’t have enough room in the shower for my cold bottle of cider. Bigger problem than it sounds! Even Julie has knocked over half a pint before shower time, that’s an indication of how how tough today was. The elevation gain was almost 1500 m. Assuming a ... read more

During the Spring last year I went to stay on a really lovely and quaint small-holding in the countryside of Bude called Cerenety as part of WildVenture's Orphan Lamb Care project. It feels a little strange writing about this now as I'm actually in Sri Lanka doing work on turtles at this moment in time, but for the sake of continuity I'm going to write about my travels in the order that I did them. My Arrival I arrived on my first day and sat down at the picnic bench in the middle of a grassy field surrounded by goats, alpacas and a small dog with 6 other fresh faced volunteers whilst we got given our health and safety briefing. We got a tour of the small-holding and got to meet all the residents - Red ... read more

Ok this one's for Maureen because she says we're falling behind. We are now finally on a good beach (missed the sun though) in Bude along the Cornwall coastline. It's very cool here, a lot like Tofino but with fewer rich germans and more rich brits. The hostel in Bude is probably the best one yet but unfortunately we only booked 2 nights and they're full for tomorrow so we're moving on to the local caravan & camping park. The good part is that the campsite is a 5 minute walk from the beaches, the bad part is that the weather here is pretty miserable right now. We got a killer deal on surf rentals so we will have the gear at the campsite with us for another 4 days. So far the waves have been ... read more

From "No Man's Land" to "Come to Good" they certainly have some weird and wonderful named places in Cornwall but the "Drive slowly for Fox sake" was the sign which made me chuckle the most. Cornwall really is a beautiful county. It always reminds me of Enid Blighton's "Famous Five" adventures with secret caves and pirates. On this part of the journey I also tried out a Youth Hostel for the very first time in Perranporth which was absolutely wonderful with magnificent views of Lugger Bay. In terms of the journey getting any easier....one big mistake. The roads continuously meander from one village on the coastline to another, dipping from sea level to the tops of the hills which makes this place so attractive. Yes the hills are painful with some of them having a 1:4 ... read more

It appears that the Monday was a bank holiday. At the end of this day the only name I have for this holiday is 'bank holiday' and have no idea what this is about other than creating dreadful traveling conditions. I would highly advise waiting until after and 'bank holidays' to travel. I left Glastonbury and headed to Taunton with the bus being a half hour later than expected. No problem. Once I arrived in Taunton the connecting bus to Exeter required an hour and a half wait. Still not too bad. It was lunch by then so I went and grabbed a sausage. Once I got to exeter I found that there were only two buses going to Bude that day. with the first one leaving at 13:00 and the next one leaving at 17:15. ... read more
