Headspace. Body space. Dialogued decision making. Do we cancel the remainder of the planned holiday and go home or see if there is improvement and continue on? The above dominated our days. Assessment and Treatment by a leading BPPV physio. Carrying out of advice/treatment. Plenty of rest. Patience. BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is definitely an illness you do not want to experience. We have been told that it is caused by the movement of minute calcium carbonate crystals into the semi-circular canals which disrupts normal eye movements causing repetitive jerky eye movements called nystagmus in certain head positions (such as turning over in bed). Sensations of room spinning, vertigo and nausea accompany this. For Jane, being able to stand or walk without support has been impossible due to the spinning, vertigo sensations. Vomiting accompanies each ... read more

Jane returned to her childhood stomping ground, Wilmslow, as we stayed with her close school friend of 60 years, Hilary and her husband Peter. Despite Jane immigrating to Australia in 1968, they have kept in close contact all those years with Jane visiting several times. Peter and I watched the Ashes Test, and it was, “You Bloody Beauty”, as Australia won in a nail-biter. One up. Enough said, as there’s four to go. We were taken to Sutton Hall, a one-time manor and convent built in the middle 16th century by Ralph Sadleir, a close aide of Thomas Cromwell in the court of King Henry VIII, on the Macclesfield Canal, for an absolutely delicious goodbye dinner. Conversation flowed freely. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time with Hilary and Peter and for Jane in particular it is ... read more

Day 37 began well but quickly turned. On the motorway about 20 kms out of Wilmslow, heading to Caldy, Jane suffered an immediate illness. Her world began spinning, profuse sweating was immediate, severe tingling in both arms, hands and legs and nausea. Stopped on the side of the motorway with vehicles whizzing past at speed is scary in itself without worrying about a sick person. It was a matter of not panicking. Could it have been a ‘minor’ heart attack? Many thoughts rush through one’s mind. Merged onto motorway to find an exit and head back to Wilmslow, phoning Hilary to tell her the situation. Hilary phoned the ambulance to be at her place. We arrived about 5-10 minutes before the ambulance. By this stage Jane could not move her head as vomiting would occur. My ... read more

So… I’m currently camped out at Terminal 5 at Heathrow undergoing a 2.5 hour wait for my connection to Johannesburg. Six weeks ago, one miserable Monday morning I was driving to work wondering why exactly I was still working in the same job after such a life-changing, 13-week, round-the-world trip earlier this year. Just one hour later I was writing to my friend Steph in Australia asking about the job situation out there. I allowed myself to daydream about a life in the sun, and kidded myself that looking at flight prices wouldn’t really mean I was moving away, but by the end of that week the flights were on hold; I’d confessed to my Mum, friends and family and had arranged to visit Ellie (my travelling partner) in South Africa en route. I sealed the ... read more

Had a wonderful time with the family over Xmas, Mam had everyone over to hers this year for a change, so that I'd get to spend Xmas day with as many of the fam as poss. I'd called in on my other side of the family on Xmas morning, then I got to see more cousins at my auntie's this afternoon. Claire & Gary had our friends round this evening for a Chilli, think the red wine's gone down a little too well, hope I don't have a hangover tomorrow - have quite a lot to do. Walked home with Katie & Nick, they're going traveling this time next year so we chatted about routes & budgets all the way home. My best friend Vicky gave me a St Christopher silver keyring this evening, it keeps ... read more

The BA strikes were announced illegal in court, so they can't go ahead, yey! But we've now got a freak snowstorm in the UK and lots of flights have been cancelled in the last few days. To make matters worse I've just read on Facebook that Ellie's snowed in (she's living in Yorkshire at the moment) so I'm just praying we don't get any more snow from now until the 27th! PS: I'm not a scrooge really - a White Xmas would be fabulous, just as long as our flight can take off with both of us in it!... read more

Had a brilliant leaving do with Ellie last night! Started at Ellie's Mams house, then walked down to our local The Farmers Arms in Wilmslow to meet everyone. There were photos of Ellie & I all round the pub, and we ended up dancing on tables then taking the party back to Dena, Ant & Jeromes house. ... read more

When I got in to work this morning a colleague mentioned that BA are planning strikes between Xmas and the 4th of January. I wasn't too worried, but sent Ellie a message to keep an ear out for more news. Ellie rang me this afternoon, the strikes have been confirmed. And it turns out we might be on a BA flight all the way to Bangkok. Well that's just wonderful (!)... read more
