Before you start reading, I should point out that this is the first time I have ever written a blog. However since facebook is not an option where I am going, and I need to upload my pictures somehow, I have started now. I may stop doing this. I may keep going. I haven't decided yet. Just remember that if my entries suddenly stop coming, it does not mean I have fallen in to the Yongding river! Tomorrow I leave for Beijing for six weeks to learn Chinese Mandarin, and to be honest I don't think it's quite hit me yet. China is such an exotic, foreign place that it somehow seems so unlikely that I will actually be on my way there in under 24 hours. I have no idea what I will find there ... read more

One of the benefits of having done the odd hike over the past few years with organised groups is not just getting out and see beautiful and remote parts of the UK, but also the people you meet. The added bonus of having hikers as friends is they organise hikes and you just get to go along. When Klaus sent an invite to a social day-hike in the Chilterns, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB - it even has it's own acronym) I had to say yes. The Chilterns is a wonderful mosaic of hills, fields, hedges, woods and lanes criss crossed with bridlepaths and walking tracks. Our route for the day was a 10.5mile circular route from Wendover (handly little railway carpark only £3.50 all day Saturday) which made use of parts of ... read more

So, my lovely lovely friend Anna has set me up this blog which is most fortunate as I would have otherwise probably not got round to setting one up and that would have been a shame. On every holiday I’ve ever take, I’ve always written a journal for a few days in a fresh notebook only to promptly abandon it, which is a shame but I always just forget. So, on re-reading it’s like I’ve been on a series of mini-breaks all over the world. I’d like to have taken many of you with me but at least this way you can hear where I am and we can share something of whatever this trip will be like a verbal photograph. If I can work out how to use my camera properly, which shamefully isn’t ... read more

So we made it back home! A reasonable flight lasting 10 hours saw us land at Gatwick on time at 17:30. Home by 20:30 and then crash out knowing I'm up at 05:30 in the morning to travel to Chiswick - oh joy! It was a fantastic holiday with some great diving. Very relaxing at a super hotel. I've now managed to put some photo's on the blog so you can look back at the piccies too! Au Revoir till next time!... read more

Well the final day was spent in glorious sunshine doing absolutely nothing! We enjoyed the previous nights meal so much that we went back to the fish restaurant again and had an equally fine repast. We also got a good look at the lunar eclipse as it passed very close to Oman. Very weird to see the moon turn red! The next morning we grabbed an hour after breakfast on the sun bed before reluctantly making our way to the airport and home. Home via the dog kennels where we picked up Ruby who then proceeded to whinge all the way home and tell me in great detail what a horrible time she'd had! Torrential rain greeted us and when we finally made it back the boiler was off and refused to re-light - oh joy! ... read more

Well I enjoyed 'blogging' from New Zealand so much that I thought I'd carry on into my next trip! We're off to Oman today (9:25 pm T3 Heathrow) and I've just sat down having done the following: 1. Cats to Cattery 2. Dog to kennels (after 2 walks) 3. Prescription picked up 4. Parcels posted 5. House tidied I'm knackered already! We land tomorrow morning 08:40 Oman time and then transfer to the Al Bandar hotel, Muscat... read more

Day 1 - Overton Hill near Avebury, Wilts to Fox Hill near Bishopstone, a distance of about 16.5 miles. Walking along the ridge the views that we had been promised in the guide book were obscured by the thick mist and damp conditions. The walk, which was mainly along the ridge passed through Barbury Castle and Liddington Castle (both formerley Iron Age Forts). No point in taking any photographs as weather too inclement Day 2 - Fox Hill to Bury Down, near West and East Isley, a distance of about 17.5 miles. Again a day of ridge walking but with the weather improving during the day. We stopped at Wayland's Smithy, a Neolithic long barrow and shortly after that passed Uffington Castle, another Iron Age Fort, and its famous Uffington White Horse. The castle and horse ... read more
