Well, I have started this blog to be able to share details about my time in the UK. My company has sent me here for about 6 months to work on a couple of projects. I am really excited about this since I have family nearby. I will be living in Reading, Berkshire and working in Bracknell, Berkshire. So, I left the USA on Sunday evening. The flight was good and we even got in a little bit early. I got through immigration without too many problems and all of my bags arrived. My driver was waiting for me and he brought me to my flat. It is really nice. It's a one bedroom flat and is fully furnished. I plan to post some pictures later this week. I walked over to a grocery store to ... read more

Today was Windsor Castle day and we hauled the kids out of bed at an obscenely early 8am to get there in time for the changing of the guard. The train ride was pleasant and efficient and the kids were suitably impressed with the speed at which the train traveled. It was nice to get out of the city and the castle was beautiful. Of course, it started to rain just as the changing of the guard began. Those who have seen the changing of the guard probably know that it goes on for an impossibly long time and accordingly many of those with the best viewing positions eventually get too bored or too wet and move on letting latecomers like us get a good view for the second half. The castle ground and interiors were ... read more

So this is it! The point of no return; we dropped the bike off to James Cargo at Heathrow for shipping to Anchorage via Minniapolis and Chicago. For safety reasons the bike has to go with less than 2 litres of fuel, and nothing in the panniers. There is something very disconcerting about riding round the M25 with the range on the bike flashing ------ which is what it does after it drops below 1! The sat nav said still 6 miles to James Cargo, but we got there so all is well. Sitting in the wharehouse were a number of fellow travellers bikes including Paul's and Chris and Danielles already crated from their drop off in Manchester. We had arranged to meet Max a fellow traveller at Heathrow as he was dropping his bike off ... read more

Today we went to visit the Queen at Windsor Castle and she was at home (the flag was flying). While we were there, the Changing of the Guard occurred. We visited the State Apartments and St George's Chapel. The guide was able to tell us about the extent of the damage caused by the fire in 1992, which took out the roof of the Great Hall and some other areas of the castle, and then explained what was done to restore the damage. St George's Chapel is the church of the Order of the Garter, the oldest still active order of chivalry in existence. In the afternoon, we took a river cruise along the Thames.... read more

May 25th 2009 A week to go This is a travel blog, but I'm still at home. This time in a week I will probably be in exactly the same place - sitting in bed contemplating the trip I am about to embark upon. Can't quite believe I am actually going away. It's been a few years since I left England for more than a couple of weeks . So what's the plan Anyone who knows me, knows there is a plan. The planning is almost as exciting as the doing! There should be a map on this page somewhere showing you where I am planning to go. I'm travelling West to East, via the North and the South. Flying into San Francisco on June 1st, New York - and the city's marathon - is my ... read more

After leaving Ptuj we decided to forego further sightseeing in Slovenia partly due to the Visa situation and partly due to the fact that we wanted to catch up with the Spreitzhofers at St Kathrein before we left. Jac programmed Dorothy once we got back to into Austria, despite the fact that we pretty much knew the way anyway, and off we went. Half and hour or so later we realized that there was actually more than one St Kathrein and we were heading to the wrong one! Luckily we were in no great hurry and arrived a little later to find them all fit and well. We sat down for a bit and enjoyed the lovely weather with a couple of drinks while we said our thanks and bid our farewells. Next stop was the ... read more

Hazel a friend of Wayne's invited me to join her on her hen do. A group of girls headed to town to see Mamma Mia, have cocktails and a lovely dinner. It was a fantastic day out, we drank lots and had a good laugh. It was lovely to meet such a nice, friendly group of girls. A couple of weeks later it was the wedding. We had booked to stay the night, which was brilliant. We checked in, had lunch, changed and headed to the church. The ceremony was very moving, Hazel looked beautiful and Andy couldn't stop smiling. The sun shone for the photos. The reception and dinner were at the hotel, lots of drink and food and laugher. We had a great table of people who all got on really well. The band ... read more
