Our time in Australia is SO nearly over now! We have now given back Sandman and have checked into a hostel for the evening - tomorrow we fly back to Sydney ready to go on to Thailand! SO EXCITED! Anyways, back to the last few days! On Sunday we decided to just drive around Melbourne and see what it was like. On our guide the campsite had given us there were instructions on how to get to Ramsay street so we headed there! It is so tiny you wouldn’t believe, they must use loads of camera tricks to make it look bigger. There was a security guard on the street so all we could do was drive in and turn around so we just had a quick peek! Then we headed into the city and drove ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » Coburg August 21st 2009

On Wednesday it was still rainy and I could feel my cold developing into flu but we couldn’t spend another day bumming so we headed back into the city. We decided to climb the sky tower - by climb I mean pay to use the lift. It is 305m high and contains the tallest post box in the southern hemisphere (unfortunately we didn’t have a postcard!). The building itself is very thin leading up to a wider bit at the top which has binoculars placed all around it. We walked around it for a while spotting all the different sites and then went to the cafe and had a beer and a glass of wine overlooking the whole city. That evening we had re-arranged to meet our friends Sarah, Carley and Chris; they arrived with their ... read more

We have now made it to Sydney and I love it! The whole atmosphere around the place is really chilled out yet it still has the vibrancy of a city - I really like it. I guess I better go back to how we got here though first! Our evening in Byron Bay was really good fun - we met up with Helen and James from our Whitsundays trip and so had dinner with them. The bar we were at had this guy going around with a microphone asking questions from Trivial Pursuit and if you answered correctly then you got a free beer. We managed to get a couple of free beers between us (who wrote ‘Around the world in 80 days’? What is the longest river in the British Isles?), and then there was ... read more

Australia Zoo was really good; they have a really good crocodile and snake collection (obviously!) and elephants and tigers too. They also put on a show with birds and crocs and stuff - that was pretty cool. We also got to feed and pet some kangaroos and koala bears which were super soft! Andy had to go back to the car for the camera and on the way he saw Steve Irwin’s wife and daughter Terry and Bindi! It was quite sad walking around the park and seeing all the Steve Irwin stuff; as you walk in the door there is a massive bronze statue of him and all his family. There is a whole section of the zoo dedicated to him; it is full of messages from people all over the world, and paintings and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island August 5th 2009

We made it onto the standby list for Frasers and it was pretty good fun! Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world; the tour was basically us and 9 other people given a 4x4, all the camping gear we could need, and all the food we could need , we were given ferry passes and let loose on the Island for 3 days! On Friday we had to watch a safety video about littering and not driving at night and also about being respectful to Dingoes - they are the purest in the world on Fraser. Then we managed to blag a free shower, cheap dinner and a parking space inside the hostel which was good as it meant we could use the bar and the toilet! There really wasn’t much to do ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Rockhampton August 5th 2009

We stayed in a place called Rockhampton last night, it is known as the beef capital of Australia; there are over 1 million cows in the surrounding area. The evening was pretty uneventful; we just pulled up at a caravan park for the night so I’ll just move on. Today we went to the Bundaberg Factory and it was wicked! Bundaberg is an Australian made rum that we have been drinking since we got here (Bundy and coke), and we love it! When we saw that Bundaberg was only a little out of our way on the map we thought we just have to go there! The tour was really very good; we got to see all working parts of the factory and so we were not allowed to bring any mobile phones or anything with ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach July 28th 2009

We are now in a place called Townsville, about 3hours south of Cairns. We have just pulled up at the beach where there is a toilet and a few other campers, we are not really sure if we are allowed to camp here but we’ll see if we can get away with it - it will only be for one night. Today we did the day tour in Paronella park and it really was good fun, they told us all the history of the park; how it was built, who made it, how the public used it - it was basically one of the first holiday resorts of its time with everything from tennis courts to a ball room. We were also taken into this tunnel where some micro-bats lived, they were they craziest thing I ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » Cairns City July 28th 2009

I have not been keeping up with the diary over the past few days so I really will have to remember what I can. We set of for Cape Tribulation, which is just north of Cairns, on Sunday and it really is cool there. It is another national park but it is rainforest and along the beach you can see where the GBR begins so they say it’s “where rainforest and reef meet”. On the first day we just checked out some of the beaches and then cooked up a BBQ together. It was really scary because we had to walk through rainforest to get to the public BBQs and that was all fine at 4pm but by the time we were walking back to the car it was dark and you could hear all ... read more

Days 32 -33 Yesterday we went to the Mirra Mirra falls with Yassine and, a new girl from the room, Anna. It was about an hour and a half away and we had to drive up the tightest and windiest road ever, it was really scary! Eventually we got to the top and there is a drive lasting about 40mins that has stops along the way to view three different waterfalls and they were all really spectacular. Unfortunately the water was too cold - even for Andy - so we just took pictures. Then we went to this lake that was absolutely crystal clear, we could see loads of fish swimming around and apparently, on a good day, you can spot turtles but we didn’t see any. It was far too cold for me and Yassine ... read more

Day 29 We picked up our new camper today and it is another Sandman! We are loving it! We picked the camper up at about 10am and then drove back to the hostel to pick up Yassine, Jackie and Tisha and we all headed out of town to the “Crystal Cascades” which is an uphill walk (only about half an hour) with a series of waterfalls to look at and pools to swim in as you go. As Cairns is in a tropical area the waterfalls are in the rainforest so all around us were the tallest trees and we saw some lizards and huge spiders and the birds were calling out all over the place, it was really fun. There was also an area where you could swim to the other side of the river, ... read more
