We are now on the East Coast and we are loving it! Cairns is an awesome city and totally geared up for backpackers, because of that reason I could never live here but for us on our travels it is wicked! Our flight was delayed by 2 hours so we didn’t actually get into Cairns until about 10am and unfortunately we were not allowed to check into our Hostel until 2pm so we just grabbed some breakfast and had a wonder around the city. To be honest we were so tired and dazed we weren’t really taking anything in at this point! We got to our room in ‘Gilligan’s’ and had a bit of a chill out until our other room mates arrived. Gilligan’s is BRILLIANT it is a 5* hostel and it totally lives up ... read more

We reached our final destination on the west coast! It has been a long slog but we had loads of fun and Darwin is a pretty cool town. It is SUPER hot there though, it was easily reaching 35 everyday. We just sorted out a campsite and cooked some food and stuff on the first day but on the second day we chilled by the pool and then headed out for the night to celebrate driving 6000km! Darwin is a nice city, very easy to navigate and reasonably small but it has everything you could need. One of the streets was just bar after bar after bar so we spent the evening there doing a bit of a pub crawl, and ending in some very bad karaoke! I was totally mauled by sandflys unfortunately - it ... read more

Djokovic we take all our mocking back! We have crossed the border into the Northern Territory and it is about 34 degrees. We can barely walk never mind play any tennis! It is just unbelievably hot! On our way here we stopped at Edith falls and, as it is croc free (well it is sort of croc free - the sign says “swim at your own risk”), we took a dip in the lake with a lovely waterfall backdrop and then set off on a hike up the gorge - we obviously hadn’t learnt any lessons from the day before! Here it was different though, instead of a scenic view as a reward for your hard work, there was a pool between two waterfalls. The water was super refreshing after the walk and the waterfall was ... read more

Did NOT have a good night’s sleep last night, the caravan park we are staying at is home to the local colony of bats. They are absolutely enormous with wing spans of a metre! Its pretty cool at dusk because they all set off looking for food and the sky is full of them but then at around one or two o’clock in the morning they come back to the trees and just screech and make this weird giggly type noise; they sound like gremlins! The wildife here is pretty cool though, we have had to stop in the street to let dragon lizards cross, the sky is full of all different types of parrots - all different assortments of colour (but, again, they can be noisy too), there are loads of fish in the sea, ... read more

We have now clocked over 5000km! We are in Katherine for the next couple of Days but I will come back to that as I still have to fill you in on what we have been up to since Karratha. We headed to Port Headland which was a really industrial town, they mine Iron Ore there and the whole town is covered in red dust, it is really strange; all the paths are red, the roofs are red - just everything! At this stage the weather was becoming unreal so we found a caravan park with a pool, had the biggest lunch ever (steak rolls - tooooooo good) and spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool. There really wasn’t anything for us to do in Port Headland it was just a stopover town to ... read more

Having been getting up at 7 for the last few days we treated ourselves to a lie-in today. We then headed for “Cape Range” national park and to “Oyster Stacks” which we had heard so much about from our neighbour. Himself and his wife have been coming to the park we were at for the past 20 years and they just live there for four months of the year chasing the sun. Loads of people there were doing the same thing, it was kind of mental, but we were meeting some really nice people. So anyway we got to the beach and who was there but the two Joes! So we had a little catch up with them and then got in the water, the reef was about 5 metres from our towels, it was unreal ... read more

We are now officially certified open water divers! Woo Hoo! Not really that much to tell about the last few days as it has all been about the course. It was run by a New Zealander named Mark and was sat in by an English guy named Dave who was getting his dive master title so had to sit in on a course himself in order to complete his own. Both of them were really friendly and great teachers so it was all good. We spent the first two mornings in the classroom watching videos and doing tests and then we spent the afternoons in the pool doing various tasks like filling our masks with water and clearing it and learning how to put the scuba gear together and all that sort of stuff. It was ... read more

We woke up early on Monday morning and headed into town to pick up our “Chubby Camper” van that is ironically named “Sandman” (you’ll find out why it’s ironic later). We checked out of the hostel and, after some help from an Australian that “used to be a Pom”, we hit the “Brand Highway”. Calling it a highway is quite deceptive as it really is just two lanes long with overtaking lanes every 20km or so. We also passed loads of road trains and they are seriously scary! They make our little camper shake like crazy; they are the biggest trucks I have ever seen and they can be up to 36 metres long! We were on this road for 400km and it is just the most crazy, long straight road with hardly any passing cars ... read more

We are finally here! We left the house at about 6.30 and after talking to a Jehovah’s Witness from Papa New Guinea all about Australia we set off on time at 9.25pm. The flight was great, mainly due to the fact that we were upgraded (thanks Yvonne!) so we watched a couple of movies, ate and went to sleep. We landed in Singapore and I really wish we had had time to go out and see the country a bit because if the airport is anything to go by, the rest of the country must be mental! It was absolutely HUGE with every type of shop and restaurant and even a swimming pool - if you had forgotten to pack anything, by stopping here, you would have no worries. Obviously Andy wanted a cigarette (but ... read more
