We stayed in a place called Rockhampton last night, it is known as the beef capital of Australia; there are over 1 million cows in the surrounding area. The evening was pretty uneventful; we just pulled up at a caravan park for the night so I’ll just move on. Today we went to the Bundaberg Factory and it was wicked! Bundaberg is an Australian made rum that we have been drinking since we got here (Bundy and coke), and we love it! When we saw that Bundaberg was only a little out of our way on the map we thought we just have to go there! The tour was really very good; we got to see all working parts of the factory and so we were not allowed to bring any mobile phones or anything with a battery that might cause a spark - they could cause a fire due to all of the alcohol fumes! Firstly we were taken into a shed that had a million litres of molasses in it! Molasses is basically the by-product of refining sugarcane into sugar and it looks brown and syrupy; we also got to taste some of it and it kind of tastes
like liquorice. We were then taken through to the distilling section of the factory, and then into the maturing shed where the rum is left to mature for two years in American white oak vats containing 3 million pounds worth of the stuff; there were about 17 vats in the shed we were taken to and there were more sheds around! That is an awful lot of rum! After that we were taken to see where the rum is bottled and packaged and finally we were taken to the bar! As part of the tour we were allowed two free shots of Bundy each and there were 4 different varieties to try from. They had this one (we cant remember the name of it) that is ONLY sold in the Bundy factory and it was delicious! It was like chocolate and vanilla but still had a rum taste to it; the girl told me to try it neat and then she poured a small amount of cream on the top of it and that was unbelievably scrumptious! I would have bought some if we weren’t; going to Asia but I figured the bottles would just get smashed or something. There
is a giant bottle of Bundaberg outside the factory so we took a few pictures and then hit the road again. We have booked to do our Fraser Island tour on Saturday (we are on standby) and we start that from Rainbow beach. We were going to make a stop in between but when we got to Maryborough it looked pretty shady and as we wanted to free camp we weren’t really comfortable doing it there. So we pushed on and have now reached Rainbow beach and are sleeping outside the hostel from where we find out if we have made it onto the Fraser tour or not! Here’s Hoping!
