This morning it was super foggy down in Interlaken - cloud cover was barely above the buildings. Have I mentioned how much I love fog haha. Thankfully it was supposed to be a sunny day in the mountains, so I set off to Eigergletscher and Kleine Scheidegg in search of more spectacular views, and figured I'd loop back 'round First to do the zipline. Sure enough as we started to rise out of the valley, the sun came out to play. FYI all the trains meet up in terms of connections, which is great for organization purposes but makes for a mad dash as people try to get seats. We arrived into Lauterbrunnen at 8:55 for the 9:07 departure and I just wasn't game for an attack. I bummed around the town for 20min and made ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Grindelwald July 15th 2019

Rain and cloud cover can't even dampen my spirits here. It was a cloudy miserable morning, but screw that, I have a rail pass I'm going exploring! I decided to start with Grindelwald and First - the hope being if it did clear up, I'd go for the Cliff Walk and the First Flyer (zipline)... yeah, I did not haha. Oh well, another day perhaps. It certainly was the tale of 2 days though - the majority was spent in the clouds and mist, but it cleared up for Lake Bachalpsee which was incredibly fortunate on my part. I'll get to that. So the train ride to Grindelwald was eerie and I loved it. Horrible glare in the photos (lights on train)... but basically ~200ft or so is clear and then all you see as you ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Kandersteg June 28th 2019

A busy school term to finish off the school year. Lots of sports/athletics days, school plays/theater showcases and school residentials/camps. We managed a long weekend in Kandersteg this term. We camped with friends at the scout camp. A beautiful spot, but perhaps better for bigger groups. We did some lovely hikes. The best was Oeschinen Lake, unfortunately the weather was terrible and we hiked with our wet weather gear and umbrellas. We caught the gondola up and hiked to the lake. Hung around the lake during a dry spell, sat in the cafe to warm up. Due to the bad weather we didn't manage the luge which was a shame. Kandersteg was beautiful and well worth the trip. Now we head into the long, summer holidays in Europe. Take care, Miriam... read more

Geneva sits on a slip of land at the west of its lake. Flying in to clear blue water beneath us, after a delayed and just tolerable Easy jet flight, we’re so pleased to arrive. The most French of Swiss cities, it took an effort to get out of the now freely thought habit of speaking español. Channeling the high school French lessons for P2 helped with the basics. Such as, we said hello to a dog, Le chien. I’ve since been encouraged to consult google translate, not him. Our Airbnb was on the fourth floor of an early 1900s building, serviced by a lift as small as a fridge, in a wired cage, and that you may have to wait some time for. We figured out the floor buttons didn’t properly register after squeezing ourselves ... read more

Have we ever actually skied in the Swiss part of the Alps? Well we have now. Normally opting for the cheaper French or Italian Alps and not being disappointed, we realized we had avoided the pricey-er Swiss part of the Alps. As spring flowers were blooming in our garden, tennis rackets were out, bicycle tyres were pumped up, walks to the local playground etc, spring had definitely arrived in Geneva. We enjoyed hosting the Phyares for a weekend of fun, the girls enjoying having their friends around. We went to Nyon and caught the boat to Yvoire, always a fun trip. But most of all we just hung around and enjoyed having our friends around. It is such fun to see these guys and we really appreciate the wee detour they have done for a few ... read more

Another ski season based in Geneva, this season we tried some new things. This season we learnt to cross country ski - my favourite as there are no chair lifts to fall off! La Vattay is in the Jura Mountain range, just down the road from Col de la faucille where we were skiing other seasons. We started snow shoeing at La Dole and St Cergue. On my bucket list, was to snow shoe at night to a refuge for fondue, Murray and I were lucky enough to go with some fellow kiwis. This was planned after meeting some kiwis at Waitangi day and ended up being a few days after the Christchurch mosque attack. It was nice to be with fellow kiwis to remember those that died in the attacks and come together against this ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva March 8th 2019

Alright this one is going to be a little different. All the other past trips I have written about have either been with my family or school. This trip to Europe in March of 2019 was the first time I traveled completely alone to another country. During my trip, I visited Switzerland, France and Belgium, albeit small parts of each. The trip started in Switzerland, and then I went to France and then came back to Switzerland. I flew back home from Belgium. Some of the highlights were skiing in the Alps, the Geneva International Motor Show, and Belgian fries. The last is one especially exciting. In total it was a ten day trip starting on March seventh and ending on the seventeenth. For me, the excitement started on Monday, and my flight was on Thursday. ... read more

Term 1 seemed more hectic than normal. Murray was away a lot in Bangladesh responding to the emergency there. I was working full time covering for a colleague. C at a new school and the others still at primary, we are now on 3 different campuses. Still enjoying the beautiful place we live in, as the weather changes into winter.... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Fribourg October 3rd 2018
