Zermatt We have now returned from the last big adventure, its winding down now. Last entry we were on the way to St Moritz, we got into there about 3.30 Had a good walk around in the daylight, up the hill above town and around the lake. It's a picture perfect town but a bit too ritzy for me. Apart from the cold and the scenery, the first thing you notice around these parts in the prices.  Must be one of the most expensive places in Europe. We leave early in the morning on the Glacier Express, billed as the worlds slowest express train, for 8hours it winds it's way through mountains, valleys, tunnels and across very impressive bridges to the town of Zermatt, at the foot of the famous Matterhorn. The train has a ... read more

On August 5 we left Corfu. We took the shuttle to the ferry port, waited for the next ferry to Igoumenitsa where we caught an overnight ferry to Ancona, Italy. Now this ferry was huge. I don’t remember if we mentioned Dan’s disappointment in the size of our last ferry. But he had previously been on a cruise-like ship and this most recent boat didn't meet his standards. However, this ship did. It had a swimming pool, several lounges and dining areas and more. We set up camp in one of the lounges where we hung out most of the night, watched movies and eventually fell asleep. We thought it would be great to go to Zermatt in Switzerland. So we took a train from Ancona to Milan where we got on another train to Brig. ... read more

Scott and I set out for a long weekend in Switzerland from City Airport - very convenient but a little run down. We arrived into a muggy Zurich Banhof late Friday night. Just as the local youth were getting ready for a night on the town, preparing by drinking boxes of beers in the local squares. After a short sleep we were up and back at the train station zooming towards Liechtenstein along Zurich See (Lake). Arriving into Sangans we had a bit of time before a connecting train so decided to pick up our tickets for the Glacier Express. Lucky for us there was a really helpful lady at the counter as it appeared we only had a reservation and in fact needed to buy a ticket as well. She worked some magic and we ... read more

The Matterhorn is still closed. The wind isnt as strong as yesterday but the temperature at the peak is minus fifteen degrees. Instead of going to Interlaken I am going to stay here until I am able to snowboard this stupid mountain. The train to Interlaken is a budget crunching 80Franks so its probably a good idea i dont go. I also found out that with Eurail, one country isnt one day, you can go as far as you can in that date on any train service which is bloody good! i dont know what im going to do today. Just chill at the hostel bar I guess..... read more

It was snowing really heavily in the village yesterday which was the coolest thing ever, i felt like a three year old kid when you first see snow. But today it has completely cleared up. The Matterhorn is closed because of the strong winds on the the peak, around 46kph. So because of the visibilty I went hiking with two other Australians (Matt and Andrew), also staying at the Matterhorn Hostel. We climbed to the top of Dufourspitze which is 4634 metres above sea level. It gave a 360 degree view of the Alps and the Matterhorn and across the boarder to the Italian Alps. That was honestly the most amaxing thing i have ever seen in my life. Hands down i have never been so amazed. Also, just for you dad, these two guys brought ... read more

Trip to Gornergrat It was nice sunny September's day. We were camping 2 nights in Zermatt (Camping Matterhorn) and on the 1st day we made a trip to Gornergrat(3100m). Our trip started at 7.30 AM, we went trough whole Zermatt and by the first tourist sign we turn left to the wood. The steep path trough deep forest was poling by cog-railway, from which tourist were waving over us. After an hour, when we walked out the forest, we could see the nice scenery of Matterhorn. And from this moment, Matterhorn was our "guide" all the way. Our way followed through meadows and forests to Riffelalp(2211m). There is a complex of small hotels and here we met first tourists. We followed them by steep dusty path from which we could see nice views of Zermatt valley. ... read more

Well here we are in lovely Switzerland! At the moment we are having a lazy day, catching up on a bit of reading, napping and blogging. Half the reason for this is because our feet are quite sore and the other half is due to the weather. We have rain and thunder today so it’s quite nice being wrapped up in the van while watching the rain hit the glaciers above us. We are currently staying near a little village called Randa which is about 15 minutes drive away from Zermatt Village. We have spent the last couple of days doing loads of walking around the Zermatt area and have been blown away by the ease of Swiss travel. We could get quite used to this place! Our campsite is fantastic. There are no set pitches. ... read more

On the 7th July we fly to Geneva to begin the Walkers Haute Route. The world famous skiers Haute Route (High Level Route) was turned into a high altitude trek years ago and is 180km between Mont Blanc (Chamonix) and the Matterhorn (Zermatt). It should, hopefuly, take us 13 days and we'll post some pictures and a trip report (excitement) here before we head off to Canada on 27th July. I have put a few photos on but haven't written a trip report as that would be a tad heavy at this stage. More to follow. ... read more

Morning spent wandering around Lugano, before a stop at a swiss chocolate shop for a second breakfast. Then back into Italy and onto Lake Maggiore. A short boat trip to visit the island of Isola Bella, a magnificently located palace and garden island. Lunch on the island before a visit of the palace, where both Napolean and Mussolini had been famous visitors. Then back into Switzerland and up through the Simplon Pass, into the snow and Alps again. Overnight at Tasch, as cars can't go any further towards Zermatt.... read more
