well the night train in a seat was certainly a different experience. the seats were kind of special seats so it wasn't to bad. the lights however didn't go out too well so i rigged up an eyemask out of a strap and my sunglasses cloth because i am too stingy to buy myself one. why should i when i should have received it complimentary of singapore airlines!!! the conductor on the train was quite thorough. he was the first one to actually ask for my passport with my eurail ticket. i read a bit of harry potter (when i say a bit i mean i am 100 pages from finishing a 600 page book i bought 48 hours ago) and then tried to sleep. unfortunately reading a book without finishing it before bed has never ... read more

On our last day in Interlaken, we took a train over to Lauterbrunnen, and from there up to Jungfrau, which is constantly being advertised around town as the 'top of Europe' and really is quite amazing despite it being a little over-touristy for my taste. The train ride up and back was pretty much an all day affair, but the views were incredible all the way up. Two little california girls sitting across from us on the train were highly entertaining with there stories: how they lived in Germany and Thailand for a while, and there favorite cat in the whole world named peanut butter foo foo fluff, and the fact that they were each wearing seven layers of pink clothing. They played with my ipod, listening mainly to simon and garfunkle, and kept shouting ... read more

Travelled up to Switzerand from Nice on Thursday. Went past Bono's house an island on the French Riviera. We stopped just past that to go to a perfume factory, which was a bit unexpected but educational al the same. Went bac into Italy then up from Genoa and past Milan. Its amazing how each new country the scnery changes. This time from nice italian farms to as far as the eye could see mountains. Went through Europes largest tunnel, 17km and made it to Lauterbrunnen in the main valley of the Jungfrau region. Got there about 6.30pm an compared to very hot weather i had been recieving it was a bit of a shock to exit the bus, pretty cold for singlet an shorts. The campsite has a great view up to the ranges and every ... read more

The text from this entry was lost. It's one year later and I just discovered that the pics are still online. So I thought why not post them, in case some random travelers are curious to see what Lauterbrunnen's like? ... read more

Well, I wouldn't exactly describe it as a holiday... see more - written a couple of weeks later, using memories and photos! Thursday 29th March Arrived back at the Manor about 7 - bit later than planned - but they’d held me some food! Had a few chats, then it was the monthly meeting, explaining what has been going on with Oak Hall that month. We sat at the back as we expected to have to leave half-way through, but were then told the coach had been held up in London. Then it was all on again, so we loaded the luggage (lots, as had all my ski gear for one day’s skiing I get, plus clothes for cleaning in, and some thought-provoking (and more trashy - I’m not proud!) books for any down-time… plus of ... read more

On the bus ride back to Lauterbrunnen, we stopped at Trummelbach Falls. From the sign outside, this about sums it up: "10 cascades inside the mountain rendered accessible with a tunnel-lift and illuminated. The Trummelbach alone drains the mighty glacier defiles of Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau." You walk through the cave past all of the waterfalls - it's beautiful (and very loud!).... read more

Needless to say, Lauterbrunnen, with all it’s stunning mountains and valleys, rivers and lakes, provides plenty of opportunities for all sorts of extreme sports like paragliding, bungee jumping and white water rafting. Foo and I weren’t game enough to try any of that, but we did go for a hike to see Trummelbachfalle (Trummelbach Falls). Trummelbach Falls is a glacial waterfall - as the sun melts the ice and snow at the mountain peak, the resulting water works its way downwards, crashing and carving its way through the mountain to reach the bottom. We took a tunnel lift (similar to what miners use) up and into the mountain, and followed the waterfall on its tumultuous journey down. The water temperature was just above freezing, at 2 degrees Celsius!! Even though it was really hot outside (I ... read more

Absolutely picturesque! And, thankfully, not as cold as we thought it was going to be. It was our first experience in a multiple bed dorm… a 6 bed one - all girl dorm though. It was also our first experience with shared showers and bathrooms! I think we struggled more with the idea of this than the idea of sharing our room!!!! Lauterbrunnen is a tiny village in German Switzerland, nestled in a valley at the foothills of the Alps. Breathtakingly beautiful views meet you at every turn… Swiss chalets and snow-capped mountain peaks, rolling green knolls, and stunning waterfalls. A walk through the village brought us across quaint little churches, fast flowing streams which originated in the mountaintops, and even a goat, just as curious about us as we were about him! We were only ... read more
