I'm terribly sorry I've been so late in updating...it's midterm week at the castle, and my brains have been a little fried. But the end is in sight! Anywho... I'm really not a fan of sleeper trains. I know I mentioned this in the previous entry, but I figured I should reiterate that statement just one last time. Granted, the view was awesome. Half the night was spent going through Tuscany, and other picturesque parts of Italy, and in the early morning, we journeyed through the Swiss Alps. Awesome. But the unknown stains on the beds, the shady characters walking in the halls outside, and the undesirable bathroom were not as pleasant. Needless to say, we arrived in Lausanne, Switzerland at promptly 8:40. Lausanne is in the French-speaking portion of Switzerland, in the South West. After ... read more

For what I imagine is my final day trip this summer, my friend Cassie and I drove down to Lausanne, the International Olympic Headquarters. We spent the afternoon lying in the sun on Lake Geneva. We then went over to the Olympic Museum and I found yet another Nonviolence Revolver! Turns out that this is a replica (the originals at the UN, Malmo which I saw this summer, and Luxemborg which I plan on seeing on of these days) ... I think I am obsessed with this sculpture. The architect began sketching it after the death of John Lennon, which so affected him that he felt as if he needed to express his despair. Although the one in Lausanne is evidently one of 8 or so replicas, it was still pretty amazing to stumble upon another ... read more

I don't often drink so much that I am hung over the next day. Last night was apparently an exception. When I get like this I always think of the description of Peter Fallow's hangover in Bonfire of the Vanities: an egg yolk in his head exploded into millions of silvery minnows swimming towards his flesh The occasion was a barbecue at the lake for the students. I got there an hour late because I turned right instead of left when I reached the lake and walked halfway to Geneva before turning back. I was ready to give up when I heard rowdy drinking songs coming from a distant mob. When I arrived at the edge of the mob I saw the cause of the commotion. At the center one student held another student upside down ... read more

Man has this week gone by so fast. Figure it's time I sat down and told ya about it! So our group left Phoenix last Friday (early morning) and got into Geneva early Saturday and eventually figured out the train system to get ourselves up the lake to Lausanne. There we met up with Raffael, the travel advisor for HEIG-VD (the school we're studying at), from there he told us it's a 5 minute walk to the metro that goes right to our dorms, not bad right? 1st, it's raining, but at least it wasn't cold... then we see our "5 minute walk" up a very nice long, somewhat-steep hill, with all our luggage. Around a half-hour later we get to the top and it's a fairly short walk downhill on a side street from there ... read more

We had a busy month! We had a visit from a good friend from Texas, and took in the Holiday festivities in Lausanne. Emma arrived the first week in December. We strolled Lausanne, visited the Olympic museum gardens and took a crazy day trip to the Mountains in an attempt to ski. Lausanne is beautiful at Christmas time...full of traditional decorations and good cheer. They had wonderful festivities throughout the city the whole month of December, including numerous visits from "Pere Noel and his charming ass" (a translation on the community website..hee-hee). The plaza near our house, St. Francois had free pony rides around the square every Sunday, as well as a beautiful Christmas village with hot wine and trinkets from around the world. We took a day trip to the little ski village of Overonnaz, ... read more
