We started out from Stuttgart around 11:00 AM and headed south for our 4+ hour drive to the town of Lausanne which is on the southern side of Lake Geneva. Lausanne is in the French speaking part of Switzerland. About 1/4 of Switzerland is French speaking, 1/2 German, a small percentage Italian and the balance a local language. Lake Geneva is beautiful, with the Alps srrounding much of the lake. Unfortunately, the weather while we were there was overcast and hazy, somewhat muting the spectacular alpine views. The town center is an area with buildings dating to medieval times still in existence. The evening we arrived, we took a walk down to the Ouchy section of the city, which is the lakefront. We stopped at very nice little outdoor cafe, the MGM, and had a nice ... read more

Dorm Life Ever wish you could relive those halcyon days in the dorms-- parties, all-nighters, bull sessions, etc? Well then, I'm living your dream. This year my residence in Lausanne is actually a studio apartment located in the University of Lausanne dorms. The apartment is fine, but at night the dorms come alive. As I type this (it's now past midnight) I can hear dozens of conversations going on, all in different languages. A circle of giggling girls sits at the entrance to the building opposite my window. They're speaking French. There's a party on the top floor of the building on the corner. I can hear smokers standing on the balcony speaking Spanish. There's a crowd of drunken boys laughing loudly in the quad. Unfortunately, they're speaking English, which means they're probably my students. A ... read more

We headed south after Basel to Lausanne which is at the base of the Alps on the other side of Lake Geneva. Luckily for us the sun was out, for this day at least and we made the most of this. It was supposed to be raining for the next few days so the first sight of sun we were rushing around the very hilly city trying to see as much as we could before it turned bad again. First stop was the church sitting above the city and we did not realize how a good a view that was offered from this point. We spent some time here checking out things and taking plenty of pictures then headed into the Church and it was opera singing practice which was a bonus for us to see. ... read more

Hi all, I'm currently in Lausanne. Since my last entry i have been to Zurich, Bern and Interlaken. I'm eating cheese and bread from the supermarkets and staying in hostels or with Sylvie's friends - so have been pretty good with money. I've been dancing up a storm at the clubs, visiting old cities and churches and it's crazy to see how different everything is from Australia. I have been a little bit home sick today and i think the non stop travelling and walking has taken it's toll... today i just sat down and organised some of the things i will see and do in Italy... i also have to book my accommodation. Today was not very good weather here so it worked out alright. Hopefully tomorrow the weather will be better - im planning ... read more

From Shell: So while we are having a pretty long holiday..... we were very focused on only visiting Italy, France and Stephen* in Europe, so that we wouldn't spread ourselves too thinly. So imagine our surprise when we spent four hours viewing the most stunning Swiss country-side yesterday (albeit at 150kph!). It all started with our combined wish to travel via train from France to Italy and resulted in our Eurail pass consultant booking us from Lyon, France to Milan, Italy by way of Geneva, Switzerland. Maybe she had something against the Mont Blanc tunnel?? Anyway, the gods of travel shone down upon us and 1) gave us a Swiss train conductor who overlooked the fact our Eurail pass doesn't cover Switzerland 2) ensured we passed through customs in Geneva undetected. It was, in fact, the ... read more

Life in Lausanne has so far turned out to be pretty sweet. First off - for those of you who don't know - Lausanne is a small city on the shore of Lake Geneva and is the capital of the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is in the French speaking sector (Romandy) and is round about the 4th largest city in the country. I am attending the University of Lausanne's HEC business school. Lausanne is built on a CLIFF! It has 2 metro lines, one running laterally across the city connecting the central district with the western suburbs and the universities, and the other cuts up across the city vertically connecting the port at Ouchy on Lake Geneva with the upper districts above the city at the top of the hill. i have no idea ... read more

So I'm switching to travelblog.org cause blogspot.com sucks. Went on a hike with the brother today up to Le Grammone. Steep as a mofo, but worth it ten times over. It seemed like the top of the world once we hit the top. There was an older man at the top with a parasail waiting for the wind to pick up, but the clouds rolled in so he had to nix that. About a third way up is the town of Le Flon, which is about as quaint and alpine as you can get, with amazing views on all sides and a green-blue lake. Had an awesome dinner of curry and vino and am ready for the 9 hour train ride to Schladming, Austria.... read more

Caught the train first up to Zermatt, then onto Gornergrat to view the mighty Matterhorn. Up at 10,000 feet, the air was cool, the snow thick. Unfortunatey was a bit of cloud round the mountain, but still great scenery. Plenty of skiers still about taking good advantage of the snow. In the afternoon, drove though the vineyards of the lower Rhone valley to Lake Geneva. Past Montreaux, famous for its jazz festival, and Vevey, famous for the home of Charlie Chaplin and headquarters to Nestle. Overnight stop just outside Lausanne, home of the Olympic committee.... read more

Lausanne, to Mouchard... We are in Luasanne, Switzerland. Switzerland! I never imagined I'd end up here, but the mountains are really beautiful. Still, Becky and I are both aware now that we are not supposed to be here. There is no energy, or flow. We feel as if we have temporarily lost a tangible connection with our sojourn vision. We sense and check out a few hotels, but nothing is coming together. We know the signs - everything is too hard and no answers are coming. In my angst and exhaustion, I had relinquished much responsibility. Becky, I think, was more focused on serving, or perhaps, placating, me. We didn't sense the signs telling us we were moving out of flow. Neither of us were fully present and somehow we missed important cues. Now, we were ... read more

I'm terribly sorry I've been so late in updating...it's midterm week at the castle, and my brains have been a little fried. But the end is in sight! Anywho... I'm really not a fan of sleeper trains. I know I mentioned this in the previous entry, but I figured I should reiterate that statement just one last time. Granted, the view was awesome. Half the night was spent going through Tuscany, and other picturesque parts of Italy, and in the early morning, we journeyed through the Swiss Alps. Awesome. But the unknown stains on the beds, the shady characters walking in the halls outside, and the undesirable bathroom were not as pleasant. Needless to say, we arrived in Lausanne, Switzerland at promptly 8:40. Lausanne is in the French-speaking portion of Switzerland, in the South West. After ... read more
