Sadly, we farewelled Gersau this morning, just as the weather seemed to be coming right. We had been so lucky to have such a lovely house to stay in for the week and to get to know the area better. Before leaving, we had a talk to Gertrud who was able to answer a few questions for us and confirm that Gersau had been a republic for 400 years and were very proud of the fact. The family name Camemzind continuously cropped up in the cemetery because Gersau had been isolated in the past so they all likely married relatives from time to time. It is so good to have such generous friends in Switzerland. We had a good clean up of the house and left around 10am for Grindelwald. The journey took us back around ... read more

In between Barcelona and Switzerland, we stopped at Pont du Gaurd and Avignon. Haven’t heard of it? Me neither. Pont du Gard is actually a really famous bridge, and I learned about it in one of my architecture classes but it was a 15 minute walk to get there…in the pouring rain…I normally would be all for it, but I was actually really sick and didn’t want to ruin the rest of my trip. There’s not much to talk about in Avignon either… all I did was eat dinner and recover from all my lack of sleep I have been getting since Venice basically. We left the next day for the Swiss Alps. I know that every post I say that “this is my favorite place so far”… but This is my favorite place so far, ... read more

Today we decided to make the trip out to Grindelwald again and do some more toboganning, as it may be a while before we are back in Switzerland! We were able to get there earlier today than we did last week, and got in way more runs over the course of the day. Amazing what can be done when you don't lose your partner and you know how to do what you're supposed to be doing! Don't have any pictures to show for it, as we forgot the camera back at our apartment. We considered buying a helmet cam so everyone could get the full experience, but 600 bucks seemed a bit steep! Take our word for it that we are now seasoned tobogganers - we kept getting faster and faster, with more air on the ... read more

Early morning wake up call! On the road before 7:00 so we can get to Grindelwald and take on the world famous 15km toboggan run. Donna’s driving today, as Jon may or may not have gotten a photo radar ticket yesterday! After a 2 hour drive, we arrived in Grindelwald, another smallish ski town. We stopped at the visitor centre to figure out just how one goes about getting tickets for lifts and rentals and parking etc., only to be told that Big Fritz, the 15km run, is closed today due to avalanche risk. What??? We decide to make the best of things anyhow, seeing as there were still several trails that were open. Parked the car, rented ourselves some “sledges” and helmets, purchased transit passes for 2 different options, and boarded the train for the ... read more

Wow Switzerland is expensive! and it's not just because we converted South African Rands- even the locals find it expensive! Anyway..I am not going to grumble about that, this place was far too pretty to spend a blog space moaning about it...SO... When I picture paradise...this is the place I think of.. Awesome mountains, green grassy slopes, pretty flowers, mooooing cows and cowbells ringing in the distance... As I stared into the distance I pictured Heidi and Peter running , skipping and rolling in the green grass as the goats and cows peacefully graze on the mountain slopes...my only dissapointment was not coming home with my own real cowbell:( Besides being famous for Heidi, it's also well known for skiing, hiking, snowboarding, icerinks, and climbing. This 10km wall of mountain is made up of a few ... read more

Wir mach ... read more

Today it isn't raining too bad so I caught a train to the nearby town of grindelvald so that I could check out the waterfalls and caves I have heard about here. The caves are actually part of a man made path carvedoin to the side of an enormous slab of limestone or Alpine chalk, whatever you prefer to call it. The water from the White Lutschine roars, drowning out all other noises. There's a big adventure race going to happen this week, so this hostel is teeming with racers and staff. It is called the apex race if you are interested in following along. I'm rooting for the Kiwis!... read more

April 7-9 This weekend seemed almost like a how-much-of-Switzerland-can-you-see-in-three-days whirlwind. Saturday Anna, Julia, Carolyn and I spent the day in Lucerne, wandering the town, climbing the old town wall, crossing the old covered bridges, and exploring the many churches. Since it was the day before Easter every single one of the churches we went into was having rehearsals so we got several amazing free organ and choir concerts. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but the acoustics in these old churches are absolutely amazing! In the evening we cooked our own feast of pesto pasta, frizzled spinach with feta, and a strawberry-spinach salad with stroppe waffles to top it off. Then we proceeded to spend the cold rainy night playing all sorts of card games in the hostel lobby. Sunday morning we attended Easter Mass ... read more

Grindelwald, the famous village in the swiss mountains is just a 1 hour drive away from our home. Well, it is indeed a very touristic place, nevertheless we love to spend some time there as the landscape is amazing and there are still places where you can escape from the crowds. With this blog we would like to give other travellers tips where to go and what to do in this area. 1. If you want to go hiking or mountainbiking - that is the perfect place to be. There are a lot of great hikes in amazing surroundings. Even though it is very touristic, the trails around the First are easy and you have an amazing view. The Bachalpsee is a great spot to relax in this scenery. Very recommended is a 4-6 hours walk ... read more

It’s the Swiss National Day today and one of the reasons we came back here before leaving for home. Our memories of the last one we saw encouraged us to stay a couple of days longer. We’ll see if this evenings celebrations live up to expectation. Today we did another favourite but it also meant being in amongst large numbers of people. It is a Public Holiday and the weather is superb so we cannot expect any less given our route for the day - Mannlichen, Kleine Scheidegg, Wengin, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Grusalp, back to Lauterbrunnen and home. We walked to Grund and took the cable car up to Mannlichen and walked to Kleine Scheidegg. The mountains are in their most absolute magnificence today. Clear blue skies, a lot of snow and 360 degree views. We sat ... read more
