We moved into the apartment yesterday and it brought back memories. Unfortunately the bad one was that this is where we were when we were told of Robin's death. On the plus side it still feels like a familiar second home. We've stayed here 9 times over 22 years. It still continues to "wow" us as you come up the Lutschen Valley and have the first view of the Eiger. I thought the Dolomites were magnificent, but so are the Bernese Alps. Maybe 10/10 each. The area around Grindelwald is stunning with the shear face of the Eiger, the Jungfrau alongside, the glaciers hanging and the Wetterhorn along further. The glaciers have moved back hugely since we first visited and are a shadow of their former selves. We paid a visit to the village in the ... read more

We are in the best hostel in the world right now, with a couple of the coolest people we've met so far, in the most beautiful country that we've seen yet. The town is actually called Lauderbrunnen (it wasn't listed, so the blog says Grindelwald--which is somewhat nearby). It is located at the floor of a valley in an area called the Berner Oberland, surrounded by roaring waterfalls and the daunting Swiss Alps. It's quiet, apart from the cowbells that we can hear jingling 24/7, and the air is fresh. There are little glacier-water creeks all over the place. I can't imagine a better place for us "country-bumpkins" to relax for a few days. To make the experience even better, our hostel is AMAZING. It's a tiny family-owned place that is run by a sweetheart, named ... read more

Back to Geneva The reason for our trip to Europe was that I had a standards meeting in Geneva. Geneva is the home of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as well as over 200 other international organizations like the Red Cross, UN, and WHO. Considered the most expensive city in Europe, the place has loads of people on expense accounts so it's hard to get by cheaply. I was on the company dime, so we spared no expense and had some great meals and good times. I even ate dinner with Sir Arthur - my companion that went to my first Mardi Gras parade with me and saw the Saints advance to the Super Bowl in this post (http://www.travelblog.org/North-America/blog-471199.html). A couple of my co-workers Anoop and Dave joined us for this Indian dinner as well. Geneva ... read more

I’m a bit behind on the blogging as we have been pretty flat out since our day relaxing in the rain near Zermatt! The rain did continue as we made our way towards the Jungfrau area. Luckily it did stop in the afternoon - which is just as well, as we spent nearly and hour and a half trying to find a camp ground! Since we were planning on spending a few days here we decided to hunt for a really nice pitch. The first camp was really expensive and the pitch was in the overflow carpark overlooking the chemical loo point. The second camp was huge - and very, very busy. The first thing we saw was a massive Contiki bus in the parking lot so we fled! Similarly, the third campground was geared towards ... read more

This time around, the budget for the ski trip had been upped to allow for something more indulgent, and a ski trip to Grindelwald in Switzerland was settled upon - after all, how can any self-respecting skier ski the world and not include Switzerland on that itinerary? Well, a flight to Geneva airport, and transfer to Grindelwald pretty much landed me in the thick of the action, and the charming Alpine village of Grindelwald seemed to ooze central European charm from every living pore of its existance. The legendary Swiss service was very much in evidence at the hotel Spinne, and its comprehensive spa facilities, coupled with a well-fitted hotel room, and the delightful ski terrain surrounding the resort left me once again on a week-long buzz, where all the right elements for a downright fulfilling ... read more

It is kind of a strange day today. There is no cheese to be made anymore and no cows to milk! Yesterday was the big Alp Upwart (probably spelt that wrong) which is the traditional leading of the cows down the mountain back to their village farms. It was really an amazing event. The cows were dressed up with fancy bells and flowers and even me and Jan had to dress up. Then all the farmers, us, and the cows made the 5 km walk of so back to the village where we had to say goodbye. I was quite ready to be finished with the milking and work but saying my goodbyes to all the farmers is actually kinda sad for me. Some farmers have been giving me gifts to bring back home and bonuses ... read more

Getting near the end of my stay here in the Schweiz I thought it’d be interesting to say a few things about what I’ve learned about the people here. Guttannen is really quite a unique place, even for Switzerland. It is traditional and has resisted many of the modern forces in our world. The people are also very tied to traditions and work to keep them alive. Though everything isn’t problem free, as most other places they have their share of complications. Probably the most interesting part of the town is that it is still a community of people instead of a group of houses bunched together. They still do many things together and usually a good group of the town comes out to the town events. Take for example the Swiss national holiday which was ... read more

So it’s been a little bit since I’ve added anything and quite an amount of cheese has been made in the meantime so I figured it was about time I wrote something more down. A lot has happened in the past week or so, especially since my parents were out here for a visit. That was definitely a great thing. I got some good company for a while plus in showing them around I got a chance to see some more of the area other than this small part that I’m always working on. A few farmers were kind enough to milk for me a couple of the afternoons which gave me a chance to go some places with my parents. Also things have slowed down here some since school has started again here in switzerland ... read more
