The Cheese Well about the cheese. Swiss are know around the world for their cheese but really the rest of the world does not know much about swiss cheese. We tend to lump it all in a category of the cheese with the big holes. This cheese, called Emmentaler is actually a small part of swiss cheese, and a lot better tasting here that at home. This is also a much younger cheese in swiss terms, the older true mountain cheeses are simply called Alpkase or Alp Cheese. These alp cheeses varz but they all have similar characteristics, something like gruyere. Alp cheese is what we make here at Alp Handegg and is specifically called Berner Oberland Alpkase, alp cheese from the berner oberland which is our region. It is usually sold two ways as Alpkase ... read more

This is the long overdue premier posting of my Swiss Alp cheese making experience. I’ve been here over three weeks now and cannot even begin to describe what it is like. My plan is to post an entry every couple of weeks about something specific in my expereince. Things like the landscape, the cheese, the cows, and the people. To begin, though, I’ll give a general intro to where I’m at. The place is Handegg Switzerland which is close to the massive village of Guttannen boasting an incredible 351 people. This is situated within the Canton (swiss provinces) of Bern and more specically Berner Oberland, Haslital area. We are located on a major mountain pass called the Grimsel pass pretty much in the heart of the alps. I basically live in the cheese house or Kaserri ... read more

Penny found true love in Switzerland .... the evergreen hills and alpine meadows, the snow-capped mountains, crystal blue lakes, the scary great cows with giant bells, and she didn't even taste the world famous chocolate! (Serious diet time after the Great Italian Cheese-fest). Dave did though, and boy did he do it in style. Ten blocks of the milky brown Swiss Bliss plus a 1kg bag of Swiss Chocolate Muesli. Yum! We shacked up in a rather large barn called 'The Funny Farm' out the back of a pricey Interlaken resort. You'd think the name would've tipped us off, but it wasn't until 2am on night #1 that we realised we'd stumbled into Europe's most vivacious party hostel. We natterred like grumpy grandparents over the Guinness tent out our bedroom window with happy hour from 10pm. ... read more

Sorry my entries are getting so late, but as you’ve probably guessed traveling with someone means I have less free time that I should spend on writing ;) I have a 9 hour train ride tomorrow (the 12th) so I should be able to catch up then… We decided to use today to travel to Grindelwald, which is close to Interlaken but higher up in the mountains. It’s actually in its own valley, completely secluded and surrounded by mountains. We took a local train company’s train through some really pretty scenery unlike anything I’ve seen in the USA (although I could guess Montana and/or Colorado might be similar, if I’d ever been to those States). And into the valley, which is oppressively huge and is sprinkled with houses here and there like God took a salt-and-pepper ... read more

Hello all from Interlaken Switzerland. Well it was sad to see Mom go but it has been nice having Ross here as well. We spent two more days in Paris after Mom left and did the quick version of Paris. We got on a train yesterday from Paris-Geneva-Bern-Interlaken. It is a beautiful little town between two lakes (hence the name) and got settled at a great hostel named Balmer's Herberge. It has absolutely anything two young travellers would want. Laundry, food, a bar, store, kitchen, beds etc.... activities like sky diving, river rafting, scooter rental etc. We met some nice Canadians and Americans last night and had a blast in the night club downstairs in the hostel. This morning we rented scooters with some new friends and headed up the valley to Grindlewald. This humble mountain ... read more

We've made a decision. A large one I suppose. Before I reveal the decision I would like to outline a few of the factors: 1) Being cooped up in our little hotel in Grindewald for all but two hours of the day due to foul weather. 2) Our initial excitement over the exchange rate from the dollar to the swiss franc (the first positive one we've had) having been decimated by the price of everything and paying 40 francs for parking in Zurich. 3) Eating salami, assorted swiss cheese cubes with pretzel rolls that we bought at the market for lunch and dinner because it is too expensive to eat in restaurants. 4) Realizing that we were supposed to get some special sticker for our car in order to drive in Switzerland but neglected to do ... read more

For some reason the site doesn't want to take our pictures, so I went ahead and uploaded them to our (dwindling) photobucket site. We don't have much on there, except for the Grindewald pictures until the site is working again. Here's the link: http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c363/KHervey/ (Hopefully it works...) So after soaking sweat through our clothes, drinking all our water, and then reaching only the half-way point for our hike, a few hours later, we called it a day. What was posted on a local sign as an hour hike to a glacier, turned into a 3 hour hike, through what seemed like a Swiss wilderness!:) (What we understood on the sign was hike, what they meant was twenty minute drive to the parking lot, and 40 minute hike to the glacier. It took us the whole hour and a half to get to the parking lot!) We both decided hiking is not so bad, but we much prefer surfing for the reward! There's something blessed about being in water and being able to ride a wave and dip back into the cool water. We ... read more

Well, it looks like all of our blogs before this morning's post were lost in a server crash or something like that. Bummer. Its OK though because we know that everyone reads them all the day we post them so none of you missed any. We are in Grindewald now and have settled into our hotel for a two night stay. We are looking forward to exploring in and around Grindewald. The weather is beautiful (about 80 degrees) and clear. There is still snow on the mountain peaks and we are nestled right in the middle of all of them. We've posted a few pictures from our last few days. Enjoy. Chet... read more
