Greetings, I'm back from Basel for nearly two weeks now. Usually I would have blogged live from the event itself, but the reality of shooting with three cameras slowed me down. The event started on Friday 13th January, but we arrived early on Thursday 12th in the morning, bleary-eyed after the long overnight flight from South Africa to case the joint, as we knew things wouldn't let up once it started rolling. We weren't wrong. The rooms at the Swisshotel Plaza in Basel are really nice. My room has a huge circular window which looked down onto the square. In the room opposite is Jonathan Ott, and four rooms down are the Shulgins. Getting into the lift with a whole lot of people who are urban legends makes for exciting moments, something the Symposium is full ... read more

Ah free booze. For some, an unexpected sign that heaven can exist on Earth. For others, a surefire ticket to hell. Today, everything bad in the world was forgotten in favor of all-you-can-drink beer. In breaking news: Rheinfelden, Switzerland The Feldschlösschen Brewery in Rheinfelden was shut down due to a lack of beer. The Rachelson Family took the all-you-can-drink tasting session a little too seriously and was too strong a force for the factory's 90,000 bottles an hour production. Although free food was also given - including fleischekase (german for "meat-cheese" although no cheese is involved), cheese pies, and pickles - the Rakes demanded more and more beer throughout the hour session. "The 90 minute tour beforehand was a real drag, I just wanted to get straight to the beer degustation," said Evi Rachelson, the real ... read more

So that's where I get the chill from! It's cold as a penguin's ass here in Switzerland, but I don't mind it. Basel seems to deal with their coldness as if they've seen it before. The decide to have 8 km footraces at night at near 0 degree (C) weather (or so my parents tell me). They set up their roasted chestnut stands during the day, and even though my nose is normally numb I still seem to be able to smell that goodness. Fresh from the beaches in Israel to the overcast crispness of Switzerland, I got a numb feeling throughout my body because I switched temperatures too quickly. I now wear 3 to 4 layers of clothes up and down my body, but it would make you laugh to see me puffed up like ... read more

It's been slowly and gracefully turning from autumn to winter. Since we've lived in California so long, we were not really used to the cold weather. Now it's 0 degrees Centigrade (32 Fahrenheit), and really feels like winter. We are living in a small, cozy, comfortable apartment in the center of downtown Basel. We step outside of our building into the midst of shoppers, restaurants, cafes, bookstores, antique shops, bookstores. Now they are also putting up the Christmas lights, and the first snow fell (about 2 cm). In fact, next door to our residence is an English bookstore, and I will be hosting a trivia cafe event there on December 7. If you are available, drop in! Here is a web address so you can see the details. http://www.bergli.ch/shop/talkparties.htm Evi and I are spending our time ... read more

Yes, we are back in Basel, Evi's home town. She was actually born in Zürich, but considers Basel her home since she was a young girl. Anyway, after two simple flights from SFO to Newark to Zürich, we arrived in good shape. We celebrated Yom Kippur with Evi's cousins and brother there, then after releasing all our sins for the previous year, the next morning we took the one-hour train to Basel, where we will stay on and off for the next month. The weather in Switzerland is cool in the morning, but sunny and warm in the afternoon. Very invigorating! Now, here are some photos.... read more

Hello- Yesterday we ventured to St Remy just to check out another provencol village. I'd heard about renting farmhouses nearby with chef-owners catering to their boarders and wanted to see if this might lead to a future venture with my husband. We wondered into a perfume factory where I purchased a scent I like. The highlight was walking into a chocolatiers shop! The most intense chocolate smell-taste Ive'experienced. FYI: St R is where Van gogh was hospitalized after cutting off his ear. Also Nostradamos birth place.. Now were located in Switzerland. Our trip today was cut short due to a missed connection. There was a bomb threat in one of the French stations. These days are intense but the scenary was incredible. We followed Lake Geneva several miles. With the snowy Alps as background, the lake ... read more

So after the revelries of the final night with the football lads in Germany, I hoisted my weary limbs up out of bed early in the morning and said cheero to my roommate Pete. From there, I walked to the train station and caught a train back into Frankfurt, where I caught one of the flagship Deutshe Bahn ICE trains and whooshed through the countryside of South West Germany and across the border into Switzerland and Basle. Felt a bit like the real Steve McQueen, except of course there was no motorbike or ensuing blood-thirsty soldiers. Basel was one sleepy ol' town and a couple of days wandering around the quaint and time-preserved old quarter gave me a good feeling of 'getting away from it all'. There were several sleepy little courtyards nestled away here and ... read more

After getting to bed at 2am we had a rather late start to the day. I took a walk around the town cemetery and the town walls of Bergheim, while Lorenza sat in the sun reading a book. In the late afternoon we went for a drive to the mountain resort of Trois Epis. It is a lovely little haven in the Vosges. There is also some kind of climate station there as well, but I could not work out the French explanation of exactly what it was for. Back at our hotel, we tossed a coin to decide on tomorrow’s destination. Heads was Freiburg in Germany, tails was Basel in Switzerland. Tails it was, we would head south to Switzerland for the day. We went to bed laughing that we had such choices, considering in ... read more

Continued from Florence As anyone who has traveled with Mike can tell you he was asleep moments after boarding the train. We were in a small coachette on the left side of the train, for the first part of our run. Something tells me mike road with his back to the direction we were traveling but that really doesn’t sound like him. I know I road facing our travel as I was FINALLY passing through that wonderful section of scenery between Florence and Bologna. This was the first time in about 18 months since I had passed this way and I didn’t want to miss it for anything. As the train started to meander out of town to the north we settled in. Once in Bologna we were now on “New To Us” territory. The train ... read more
