“See you in 8 hours” I forgot how many friends I have made from Switzerland and because of that I thought why not? I will never have this many Swiss friends ever again so lets take this opportunity. I have gained a lot of friends over the past 8 years of travel but rarely do I end up in a place where those friends live. I was in Trier in Germany’s SE and left with the option of just going back to Berlin or do something off the cuff and set up meeting some friends in Zurich on the day. ‘Oh yeah you can come and visit, great! When are you coming” “Ummm, today see you in 8 hours.” Was basically how it went. For most backpackers the only way to come to Switzerland apart from ... read more

Switzerland: - They have different wall sockets like they are aligned like a triangle and you can fit in three (Picture to come) - The Life Quality is just different most of the things are more expensive than in Germany but you also earn more so it is very stable again with the CHF, i think they will come out good after this whole financial crisis. - The Citys are very clean, they also have Trashbags for like 18 Euro like 10 of them or the big ones are 30 CHF like 30 Euro and you have to buy them cause you can only throw your trash away with these bags. - Like almost every apartement has a built in kitchen it is just the way it is! - Traffic Fines are very harsh and expensive ... read more

Last night we enjoyed one of our most enjoyable meals yet in Switzerland -- stuffed baked potatoes. Because Swiss food is so expensive, we have really have to watch our francs. But our host, Antti, took us to a restaurant that serves only baked potatoes -- about 50 varieties. I got mine with cheese, tuna, mushrooms, and garlic sauce -- delicious. Bill’s had much more stuff on it and was smothered in barbecue sauce. These suckers were huge!!! With an ice cream cone for dessert, we were nicely satiated. In order to work up an appetite (as if biking 60 kms were not enough), we walked up to the castle, which has been a fortress since the mid-fourteenth century. We met and talked with the man who, with his wife, lives in the top of ... read more

Though Switzerland is a land-locked country, we sure could not tell that yesterday as we were camped right on the Bodensee in Konstanz, Germany, across from Kreuzlingen , Switzerland. We watched people wind surfing, fishing, and sailing in the lake as we walked along the shore. As planned, we took the day off from bike touring. Instead, we biked just five kms. into Konstanz where we spent several pleasant hours wandering the streets, purchasing a few small articles and a donerbox (a shaved meat with french fries, smothered in a cucumber sauce) for lunch. Then we biked back to the campground, took a nap, did some bike maintenance, and played cards. Just as we were ready to hit the sack, the thunder and lightening began. I ran back from restroom, after brushing my teeth, reaching the ... read more

Wow, that bed certainly did feel good last night. And waking up knowing that there was a nice hot shower available and that we didn’t have to pack up the tent was fantastic! By 9 a.m. we were all awake and eating a breakfast of cereal, our favorite breakfast food made all the more enjoyable by the conversation with Kamal and Mikael. By 10 we were all headed for St. Gallen, just 15 kms. away by some back roads and trails with lots of steep ascending. We visited the cathedral in St. Gallen, built in the mid 18th century in the Baroque style, and left Mikael in the center plaza to try his hand at busking, earning money by juggling. Kamal, Bill, and I then took some bucolic back roads through Switzerland farmlands and orchards, seeing ... read more

Blog -- August 3 Where Am I? We biked through three countries in a matter of hours this morning. At times, we were not quite sure whether we were in Liechtenstein, Austria, or Switzerland. But this evening, we are definitely in Switzerland. We awoke to blue skies and warm temperatures. Biking along the Rhine River, we had 40 kms. in before 11:00. It was about that time that we got “misplaced” in the town of Hohenems, right on the border between Switzerland and Austria when we stopped at a store for a supplies. It was also at about that time that the clouds moved in and the temps got cooler. We eventually found our way towards Rorschacherberg, our goal for the evening. About noon time or so, the clouds opened, dumping their load of rain on ... read more

And so, the 3 month odyssey comes to an end. The day dawned clear, sunny and warm. A great day for holiday makers and many people were seen heading for the hills in their hiking gear or cycling gear. There were also many sunburnt bodies from yesterday's summery weather. It seems that summer has well and truly kicked in and whilst this may appear to be bad for us, it has saved us from getting too steamed up while hiking up mountains. Cooler is better and September is a far more sensible time to be in Europe. It was hard farewelling the house which may be sold by the next time we visit (if it happens again). It has been a home for us for 10 visits so we feel quite attached to it. A farewell ... read more

Travelling with your parents can be hard work! haha a bag of malteasers before lunch will explain the situation! We took a train from paris to zurich, first class, yep I could get used to this style of travel; one of the bonuses of travelling with parents! Within 4 hours of leaving Paris we had arrived in the heart of the city although we didn't stay long for we were off to Dottingen to trace some family roots;apparently this area of Switzerland is where Dad's great grandfather was born. The day brought terrible weather but luckily after arriving in a very small village we found some accomodation in the local pub. After enjoying a nice beer and meal courtesy of some lovely locals I enjoyed my night alone in my private room with german tv and ... read more

Ah, well.. Today --> Rain, rain rain. But however, we decided to take the ferry over to Switzerland - Romanshorn, but bad weather, a sunday, closed stores, cannot be anything else than what it was haha :) No well, But I think it would be very different if it was a beautiful friday evening, but well, now it wasn't. We didn't see a single person on the streets, and the only shop which were open was a supermarket, so I bought some Swiss choklate! And then we took the ferry back again. Back in the hotel we decided to take a walk in the rain, so we went to a tiny forest/park. But what made me really happy this day was the fact that Friedrichshafen Airport is just a few kilometers away and the airplanes fly ... read more

Hi all, Sunday 19th didn't turn out too bad after all, the thunder disappeared over the hills and the sun came out after lunch so we packed and tidied up ready to leave in the morning. Monday 20th Leaving lake Bled Harry said his goodbyes to the 2 German girls that had been following him around the camp site for 4 days, then we stopped off at a new supermarket for us, Eurospin (we've done that many!) to stock up then it was just a short drive to the border and the entrance to the Karawanken road tunnel that takes you through into Austria. The drive was again very scenic and easy, straight up the A10 motorway until we turned off at St Micheal im Lungau and onto the small town of Mauterndorf. It was quite ... read more
