I find myself on a train again heading towards Zurich as the last leg of my amazing European trip. I absolutely love this train trip through the Swiss Alps. The views are stunning. This is the second time I have been privileged to make this journey, and I really tried to soak it in. You never know if you will be on this path again, so I wanted to just stare out my window and take it all in. I took some photos of some of the amazing beauty I saw, however I am not so sure the pictures will do justice seeing they were taken from inside a train going exceptionally fast. Upon arrival to the main train station, I felt familiar seeing I had been there before. I was not as intimidated as I ... read more

In my car, the Audi Navigation Plus showed the Traffic Monitoring Control system. I was surprised to hear the navigation system warning me about traffic congestion near downtown Zurich. It directed me to an alternative, less crowded route. While I was in Zurich I heard on the radio that a snowstorm was expected later that night in the Black Forest area. This was the quattro weather that I was hoping to experience. Quickly I planned my route to go to Baden-Baden from Zurich via Freudenstadt. Since I wanted to have a winter driving experience, I made sure that my route would go through the meandering Black Forest roads. The roads all the way to Baden-Baden were covered with snow and sleet. The outside temperature fluctuated between -3 to +1.5 Celsius. I was so glad that I ... read more

Our first day in Zurich was a wonderful change from the day prior of frantic buses, taxis, and planes. First stop was of course breakfast and caffeine, so we headed toward the city center to Babu's Cafe and Bakery. As we'd later learn, caffeinating in Switzerland is not cheap - an espresso was usually around 4 francs, around 5 bucks, drip coffee didn't seem to exist, and cappuccinos and lattes were around 6 francs, 7-ish dollars. Anyway, at 9:30 on a Sunday the city seemed still asleep, but this place was hopping. We kept it simple with coffee and pastries - I had a Swedish saffron bun with raisins and slivered almonds, and my macchiato came with a lovely heart swirled into the milk foam. Satisfied, we ventured further into the city into the Altstadt (Old ... read more

Last day in Switzerland required that we travel from Luzern to Zurich. We were flying home from Zurich the next day. We arrivevd in Zurich via train travel from Luzern. This only took about an hour on the train. We stayed at the Zurich Renaissance Hotel. It was a 10 minute tram ride from the Zurich Airport train station. We didn't really have anything planned to do in Zurich, so we decided to just head into City Center and wander. We took the tram in and decided that we would walk towards Bahnaufstrasse. Its a mile of elegant shopping with all the big name stores... from Cartier to Longchamp to Tiffanys to LV. Mid way thru the our shopping, we made several pit stops to check out St. Peter's Church, the Fraumunster and Grossmunster. St. Peter's ... read more

Not having enough time to make any stops, I was forced to take pictures of the Alps on the trains from Luzern to Bellinzona and Lugano to Zürich. The train travels through central Switzerland and through the Gotthard Tunnel, which is a 9 mile long rail tunnel. Going south, the tunnel begins in Canton Uri in German-speaking Switzerland, and ends up in Canton Lugano, in the Italian-speaking part. The 3-hour train ride from Lugano to Zürich allows one to experience the ontime perfection and efficiency of the Swiss trains, the beautiful Swiss landscape, and the tunnels and highways through the mountains, signs of Swiss engineering. I had only 2.5 hours in Zürich, making a long stop on the ride home from Lugano to Eichstätt. Being the only place in Switzerland that most Americans can name, you ... read more

My favorite bar in Zürich is the Älpli BAR. If you want a true Swiss experience, visit Aelpli bar in Zurich. When I have out of town guests, I bring them here. You feel like you are up in the Alpsinstead of the city down a tiny alley. Its a bit difficult to find so you really have to be on the lookout. Every night they have live Swiss music but it gets especially hopping on a weekend night. The bar has recently changed management so not quite sure about the food. I’m not sure if they serve food anymore. They weren’t at 8 pm. This is where I had raclette for the first time, which I have become a huge fan! I went with a friend who had never been before. We arrived right at ... read more

The pictures are already loaded for this on the picture entry, so go back to those if you want... Sorry I'm so behind.... Zurich! February 3-5 a group of us went to Zurich for the weekend. I loved Zurich. The whole big main town area (Old Town-ish) was absolutely gorgeous! We saw lots of churches (including one with the largest clock face in Europe), Sprungli chocolate factory, the banking street with all the headquarters, Bahnhoffstrasse (supposedly one of the most expensive streets in the entire world – except there were a surprising number of not-expensive stores so we were a little confused…), FIFA headquarters (even though it was closed because it was the weekend…), the Swiss National Museum (really interesting and HUGE with lots of artifacts from the different periods of Swiss history and all sorts ... read more

We got to Zurich at just after 7 and got some food before trying to find our hotel. We tried to get a cab, but when we explained the hotel to the driver, he told us that it was in the old town and no cabs could go in there. So in the light rain, we walked and followed the phone GPS directions towards our hotel. We eventually got there and were really grateful to get out of the rain. We checked in and stayed in a room called Saga, named after the band. We then settled in and headed for bed shortly after. Tuesday arrived and we got up early in order to get cracking on the first day of Zurich! We got ready and walked down the street and found a little café for ... read more
