just a short one right now, i'm in ikea and volvo land, yup, made it to sweden safely. since i last wrote, i've showered (and almost fallen out of the shower) on a train, spent multiple nights sleeping on the train, bought cheese in prague that smelled frighteningly like a well used public toilet, visited the berlin wall and WWII memorials for a day (extremely sobering), rested a bit, walked for miles, watched "Hot Fuzz" ( a brit comedy with the same people as shaun of the dead) in copenhagen, and lots of other stuff. i've survived a possibly infected tooth/gum, which is good, but still have not gotten my malaria meds, which is very bad. so i may be taking a short trip back to munich to pick that up if it comes in (apparently ... read more

There is no shortage of clean streets, bike lanes, boats, musuems, fashion, history, music, beautiful blond men and women, bridges, delicious sweets, cute cafes or cultural idenity in Stockholm. That's for sure. A few weeks ago I visited Johanna in Sweden for five days. The flight from Munich was quite cheap and the room and board were of course taken care of; good thing - because Stockholm is (relative to the rest of the EU) quite expensive. I had a fabulous time riding bikes with Jojo from a birthday party, to the ship musuem, to lunch, to parks, and home again. The weather was lovely, and when it wasn't - there was always a tea shop close by to sneak into while the summer rain washed the air. If Sweden wasn't dark for half the ... read more

I'd like to say that I accidently bought Carrot Bread instead of Wheat Bread at the grocery store...awesome.. Last night was a "well good" night as they say in good old England. We went to Stockholm Nation which looks like it belongs in a scene of Sex in the City. A Dark bar doused in class and all its counterparts with tables glowing in a sensual red. Light enough to see and dark enough not to. Stockholm Nation has a reputation for being stuck up and I can see why because everyone there was dressed to the nines and I thought I was too until I got there and saw that I looked like I was going to a baseball game. But ah that is Sweden. Before we went to Stockholm we went to Upplands Nation ... read more

It rained today, a lot, and for the first time I didn't get where I was planning to go... it all went wrong near a wee town with the hilarious name of Angered. Got off the ferry ok, and found the bike signs for my distination (the also hilariously named Trollhattan), no worries, for the first 15km at least, then the road parallel to the multilane motorway disappeared, and the signs seemed to indicate one is meant to bike along the shoulder of the open speed motorway, which is obviously pretty bloody dangerous but also illegal in every coutnry I've been to so far ( and accoridng to the Swedes I spoke to, illegal here too), so I spent the next two hours in the rain biking up bloody great hills and going down agian looking ... read more

I have found that from the moment I enter a new country it takes approx. 4 days for me to find a succulent treat that is special to the country and then 5 seconds for me to become hooked and need an IV of the stuff hence forth. That little devil of a treat here in Sweden is a Kex bar which is a chocolate waffer bar, kinda like if a Kit Kat and pure awesomeness mated, and I have had one every day. This combined with our weekly Fikas, a swedish tradition of chatting over coffee and cookies, and our nightly boozing may just turn my body into a potato of gluttony. Thank god for biking. Without my body would not know what it is to do something healthy. We had such marvelous weather the ... read more

Hej from Sweden! Today's entry will be brief as we are off to bed a bit earlier so we can head off on the ferry to Denmark early in the morning. We spent most of the day shopping and searching around for fun little things. We started off in Kungälv to look for my favorite kitchen towels that remind me of Sweden every time I dry my hands after doing the dishwashing...what a wonderful way to end such a chore! We then headed off to Gothenburg for the afternoon. We begam at the train and bus station to secure our reservations for our journey southbound on Sunday. It is such a beautiful building and used by so many people. Next was the ferry terminal to confirm our ferry trip tomorrow, but this also gave us a ... read more

We are back in Sweden again After we came back from Venezuela we have been travelling around a little bit in Sweden. We thought we could write some about that here on this blog in spite that we haven't really been on any adventures. Well, it is called Travelblog not Adventureblog so we believe we might get away with it. On the previous entry of the blog we wrote about us looking for Alexander von Humboldt and only finding his boat. Well it turned out to be some sort of gathering of boats that day. Someone called it Tall Ships Race. We didn't find the ships very tall however, only very big and very much made of wood. We think a better name could be Big Wooden Sailing Boats Race. Why don't people ever ask us ... read more

Hej, fran Sweden! Today we took a ferry to the local town of Marstrand, which is a small sailing community on an island not far from where we are staying. There we toured through one of the two old forts that guarded the area over 400 years ago. We had great fun climbing up into the tower and searching through the secret tunnel system under the fort. We saw areas where the prisoners were kept, the blacksmiths "cell", the kitchen, the church and many cannons. Afterwards we walked around the town and Nolan had his first Swedish ice cream..."glass"...there will be a lot of that on this trip! We took the ferry back, then headed to the nearby town of Kungalv, where my grandparents lived. There we had "korv och potatis", hot dog and mashed potatoes, ... read more

We arrived safely yesterday afternoon, a bit weary, but very excited to be here! Nolan keeps saying over and over "I can't believe we're in Sweden!" We had a wonderful meal here last night...my aunt is famous for her meatballs. Nolan slept for 12 hours straight, and we awoke this morning to a beautiful blue sky and a wonderful Swedish morning. Today we are off for a few little excursions around the area where they live here outside of Gothenburg. We are closest to Marstrand which is a wonderful old community we will reach by ferry, and we hope to visit the old fort in Kungelv which was used to protect the Swedes from those terrible Norwegians back in the day. No photos yet....need a shower first!... read more

i woke up to the gray gray whale of a sky as i do most mornings here and i tried to convince myself to go on a run, but laziness won over reason. i'm now kicking myself for not going because the running trail by my building is wonderfully peaceful and beautiful. it looks like the setting of a romantic pioneer movie..haha that sounds like a horrible film. anyways hannah( yes i have a friend named hannah,i still am trying to accept that) and i went outside to read once we saw a glimmer of sunlight and we both got really immmersed into our books until thunder woke us out of our trance. the sky had become bleak without us noticing and the air colder. we each felt a raindrop at about the same time and ... read more
