Another hotel down, bags packed and out onto the streets again. Well maybe. Drive up the car park ramp - doors didn’t open. Hmm. Out of the car and got Chris to hold the person door open while I hit the intercom from outside to get the garage door opened. Voice says what is the problem. I answer can’t get out. Nothing happens. I get back in the car and back down the ramp looking for maybe another exit. Nope. Back to the original ramp. That is when I notice the button to open the door. D’oh. Anyways. Out on the streets now. Me looking really stupid but on our way. Heading to the IKEA museum today. When in Sweden what else is there than a dose of IKEA and Lego. Some interesting scenery along the ... read more

There is a small island just off the coast from Torekov where we are staying and a ferry runs 2 or 3 times a day. Yesterday the wind was too strong for the ferry to operate, so we drove to the Kullen peninsular. On the way we stopped at a memorial to where a UFO was reported as landing in 1946. I haven’t read the details as these are in a book, but next to the memorial is a place where 2 dead aliens were supposedly buried temporarily while the UFO made repairs. Will try to find a copy of the book in English. On the peninsula we walk to the Kullen lighthouse. This is the oldest lighthouse in Scandinavia and was originally built in 1561. It is also the highest and the most powerful in ... read more

Ahus is a small town on the Baltic coast near our base for 3 days in Kristianstad Sweden. It also appears to be the home of Absolut Vodka. We resist the temptation to do a tour of the facility and instead have a look around the town, which is typically Swedish, quiet, very clean, pretty Church and a small well organised museum with helpful staff. 400 years ago, Ahus was the major town in this area but was destroyed in the Swedish-Danish wars and when control of this area swung back to Sweden, Kristianstad became the new regional centre. The coast south of Ahus is a series of sandy beaches and is famous for eel fishing. We find a shop selling smoked eel and buy a half eel which is the smallest portion they sell. We ... read more

It was time to head back home- we had a rental car to return and a 6 hour journey, south bound on highway E6 towards Malmö, Sweden. We took a little break and trekked up to explore a bit of the Swedish countryside to view the magnificent coast line! As highway E6 ran parallel to the coast we were never too far away from the water! Most of the countryside in Sweden and Norway had the classic red painted barns and vast expanses of agricultural land. Also along the highway were numerous windmills fulfilling the need for green Eco-sustainability We reached Malmö and had dinner at an Indian restaurant called Urban Turban, to overcome our spice withdrawal :) and then walked around the city to see Malmö’s pride — the Turning Torso, the tallest skyscraper in ... read more

It was a bright sunny day and a new destination was on the horizon. After breakfast we took the metro to the airport and rented a car for the remainder of the trip. Oslo was our destination and we had all the time in the world to get there before sunset, after all it was the land of the midnight sun! Driving wasn’t an issue as it was a left hand drive system and google maps our friend! Highway E20 from Copenhagen took us through the Oresund tunnel and bridge to the city of Malmö in Sweden. An engineering marvel would be an understatement for this brilliant genius of structural engineering that connected two countries together and facilitated trade and cooperation. Part of the bridge is an underwater tunnel which connects to a manmade island called ... read more

When your contracts run out at work and you are to be unemployed for the next 3.5 months, perhaps choose somewhere cheap to celebrate no longer receiving a salary. Or, go to Scandinavia. And live off falafel. Sharing a single beer in four days. The flights were cheap. Edinburgh to Copenhagen return costing about £50. We could pop straight over to Sweden for a couple of days then have the second couple of days in Copenhagen. But why there? I may have previously mentioned parkrun in these blogs (https://www.parkrun.com/). This free weekly 5 km run/walk/jog is great but can become a bit of an obsession. We are not even close to the levels of obsession some people have though we do choose to wake up at 7am on Saturday mornings – we get up ... read more

Not a good night’s sleep. The hotel has my pet hate; the flimsy bed/mattress topper combo. Every time the old man turns over, it’s like riding a small tsunami. And don’t get me started on the ripple effects from his farts. And there’s no a/c so we have our own personal Swedish sauna. Today is Swedish National day, which means parkrun on a Thursday. The start is 2 miles away, so first I have to work out how to get there when walking is such a chore. Google maps suggests an electric scooter. I consider it, but can’t work out whether to lead with my good or bad leg. So opt for a good old fashioned bus. I leave in plenty of time in case anything goes wrong, which it does. My card is declined and ... read more

We’re off to Scandinavia for a long weekend of parkruns. We booked it before I fell over in Poland and smashed my knee. It seemed like a much better idea when I had 2 working legs. But I reckon it’ll just about be manageable with the correct amount of painkillers and alcohol. The cheap tickets out of Stansted at stupid o’clock aren’t so cheap when you add fuel, an airport hotel, car parking and the taxi to the terminal. Security is high. They’ve invested in new scanning equipment (presumably something to do with Donald Trump’s arrival) and they’re determined to get their money’s worth. With my dodgy knee I can’t spread my legs wide enough to stand on the designated foot markings for the body scan, which means I need an old fashioned pat down (she ... read more

This morning was wet and cold in Stockholm So after another delicious breakfast (got to make myself a waffle!) I was on a mission to find an electronics store that stocks Apple products amongst other things. I haven't been able to connect my Nikon camera to my iPad to download photos and I also wanted to buy a European charger with multi USB ports. It really wasn't pleasant outside but after going around in circles (I call this 'sightseeing') I eventually found a shop where I could purchase the charger and the guy helpfully pointed me in the right direction for an Apple authorised dealer. Note to self: don't be in a Scandinavian country when purchasing items you could have bought at home $$$$. Being quite wet at this stage, I stopped off at the same ... read more
