Spring has arrived in Sweden! Though the weather has been mild since my move here, longer and warmer days have people peeling off woolen layers and moving their café chairs to chase the sun! I am certainly no exception. Helsingborg takes great pride in brightening the town with seasonal decorations. The lights and candles that lit up Christmas are long gone, but now the streets have enormous planters filled with tulips and daffodils. And going along with the Swedish tradition around Easter, bright feathers attached to branches take center stage in various squares. Beyond the tradition of feathers, Easter in non-religious Sweden has sweet buns filled with cream, semla lining the windows of every bakery. Little girls will evidently dress up as witches and knock on doors where... read more

We started out to the Malmo Arena on Sunday, January 5th with high hopes for Canada to win the Bronze in their game against Russia. Unfortunately, our boys were not playing well, looking a little tired and lacking in control. Russia took the bronze medal in the 2-1 game. As we were a little tired of rink food and all of the nearby "restaurants" (Subway, McDonalds, etc.) had long lineups out their doors, we crossed the street to the Emporia mall to find a restaurant for supper. The crowds were just as bad there but we found a Chinese Dim Sum place in the food court with only a small crowd of hungry people waiting. We got our food quickly, and found a table near the back of the HUGE seating area and we all enjoyed ... read more

Happy 2014! I hope that the holiday season was a happy and healthy one for all. 2013 wrapped up splendidly here. A colleague and I managed to squeeze in a visit to Berlin for the Christmas markets and taste of a different culture and a big city. The school term ended with an incredible assembly with impressive performances by the students. Then my family arrived for a two-week visit! My train ride to Copenhagen to meet my family seemed a lot longer than it usually is! Once we had them fed and watered, and heavily caffeinated, we set off down the main pedestrian street in the heart of Copenhagen. We checked out a small Christmas market and its stalls. Thankfully, it was not so small that it didn’t have glögg. Everyone seemed to enjoy the warm ... read more

Saturday, January 4th started with us at the larger venue, the Malmo Arena for the 3PM game. Our seats were at the centre line, 2nd row of the upper deck above the penalty boxes. We watched Sweden beat the Russians 2-1 in a game that ended with fighting that will likely result in some suspensions on both sides for Sunday's games. Although we cheered along with the Swedes that were sitting all around us, we secretly hoped the Russians would win as our preference was to play Russia in the medal round rather than Sweden. Canada played Finland at 7PM and as usual, the stands were FULL of Canadians as well as a lot of Swedes too. It was apparent early on that our boys were not quite up to the task of taking on Finland. ... read more

January 2 here in Malmo was a great day. First we watched Russia beat the USA 5-3 to send the Americans home. Then we watched Canada beat Switzerland 4-1 to send them home. Both games were lots of fun with thousands of crazy Canadian fans and some really great hockey. January 3 we took the train to Copenhagen for the day. We started out at Malmo Central, where none of the ticket machines will take my credit cards. I had to use my Jo Jo card which luckily had enough cash loaded into it. The half hour train ride got us into Copenhagen H which is the main station across from Tivoli Gardens amusement park, close for the season unfortunately. After a quick lunch we got another train to Osterport which is close to the Little ... read more

Our day started off early, taking the bus to Emporia shopping mall by the Malmo Arena. We wandered around with minimal shopping then had lunch at a couple fast food places by the arena. We went to the Sweden-Russia game in the arena after lunch and while looking for our seats, we were approached by one of the volunteers. She was waiting for us with four new tickets, 11th row centre ice, because the system had accidentally generated our original tickets in seats that did not exist. Great service! And always nice to get a free upgrade! It was an exciting game and the Swedes were winning when we left after the 2nd period to bus over to the Malmo Isstadion for the Canada-USA game. We watched the Swedes win their game on the big screen ... read more

We all slept in a bit today, not heading out until about noon to make our way to the Malmo Isstadion by bus to see the Canada-Slovakia game. The rink was FULL of Canadian red of course so it was really exciting even before anything started. And when the puck dropped, the refs were almost immediately calling penalties against Canada and believing all of the Slovakia dives and not calling any of their penalties against us. The Slovaks scored 3 goals, all on power plays, two of them 5 on 3. The crowd was going WIIIIIIILD screaming and booing the refs. By the end of the second period Canada was down 3-2 and the third period seemed to start out with the refs being a little more even. But then McDavid scored our third goal to ... read more

December 29 A couple of buses got us into downtown Malmo with our first stop at Gustav Adolfs torg, a square with a variety of food booths, crafts and ice sculpture going on. From there we walked through some pedestrian shopping areas, and along the ocean and through the train station and shipyard areas until we passed by the Turning Torso building. The vision of HSB Turning Torso is based on a sculpture called Twisting Torso. In 1999 HSB Malmö’s former Managing Director Johnny Örbäck saw the sculpture in a brochure which presented Santiago Calatrava in connection with his contribution to the architectural competition for the Öresund Bridge. It was on this occasion that Johnny Örbäck got the idea to build HSB Turning Torso. Shortly thereafter he travelled to Zurich to meet with Santiago Calatrava and ... read more

Friday, December 27 Headed out on a cool, rainy day by bus to tour Malmo's chocolate factory (Malmo Choklafabrik). The original company started in 1888 and closed down in 1995, a few years after having been bought out. A young couple started a new, small chocolate factory in part of the original factory building and are making use of some of the original chocolate recipes. The tour consisted basically of a talk in a small museum room of the history of the factory and tastes of several kinds of chocolate. And of course at the end of it we all bought a variety of chocolate with our 20% discount! We found the Traingel Train Station nearby and took the train out to the Malmo Arena and the Emporia shopping mall. The mall was mostly high-end shops ... read more

We flew out of Regina the morning of December 22. COLD weather that we were happy to leave behind. Our flight was a little late as the plane was coming into Regina from Toronto where the Ice Storm of the Century was occurring. That didn't bother me so much as the fact that we were flying TO Toronto to connect to our flight to Europe. We ended up flying out of Regina about an hour late, at 12:12PM, by the time de-icing was completed but we had a 5 hour wait scheduled for Toronto so no worries there. As we approached Toronto's Pearson Airport we could see that the roads, trees, buildings were all completely covered in ice. The runway was clear at Pearson airport but the taxi lanes to the terminal were covered in really ... read more
