We could have easily slept in longer today but the alarm is sounding and we want to beat the heat. It is certainly much hotter here than in the mountains! We are off to Cadiz for the day. Our host has recommended a route via the train and boat. We set off at 7.30am…it’s still dark! Again I am cursing booking old town accommodation. Absolutely zero chance of hailing a taxi here and even less chance of one arriving if I try to telephone and give verbal instructions! We have arrived at the train station via the twisting narrow streets without too many wring turns. Now to negotiate the ticket buying procedure. I go to the ticket office but it’s a ridiculously slow process. The woman at the front has been at the only counter open ... read more

We want to avoid the heat and possible crowds…given that we have been told there is a fiesta today. Ian has planned a walking route to cover the other side of the historic town that we did not see yesterday and a bit if the new town. It’s a small place anyway so have plenty of time to wander. As yesterday, the downhill trot to the old town gate is a breeze. Now it’s another steep climb up a cobbled street followed by another descent down a well made path. This takes us to the Arab Baths and then the Arab Bridge. We have great views across the expanse of open countryside. Now the inevitable steep climb via cobbled steps back up to the New Bridge. There’s only a scattering of people about so we have ... read more

This morning we pack up early. Ian cooks me fried eggs which is very nice. It’s a pity all the sliced bread here is sweet - we just can’t keep the fresh bread as it always goes stale overnight. Our destination is only two hours drive away but we are taking a bit of a detour to a swimming lake at Arco de Frontier. No major hassles on the road so far today although the police are out in force doing speed traps. Given the frequency of speed limit changes along the roads here it would be easy to get caught out! We are taking it steady and annoying those that want to exceed the limits. Though there are a number of crawler lanes which we use to let those in a hurry carry on. Ian ... read more

We are moving on today. Our cases are packed, the room checked…we are ready to go. We have two points of interest on the way out of town that require a detour off the main road. First a viewpoint where we will be able to see the place we have been staying, and reportedly also as far as Malaga? And second, the Bobastra Ruins, which don’t look much on the internet but we may as well go since we will be passing! It’s 9am and we assume the guy will let us out through his barrier. I’d hoed to leave earlier to avoid any hassle but I’m guessing getting out will be easier than getting in! Ian drives gingerly down the rutted track…he knows where all the danger spots are now but, lovely as our pension ... read more

Today we have nothing planned. The two other major sites of interest here are minor and can be visited on our way out tomorrow, plus the swimming lake that we passed on our journey here that is dried up and looks like it might be more of a mud pack experience than a pleasant swim. It’s very pleasant at the pension. We have a nice covered terrace and a swimming pool and it’s all ours as there are no other guests here right now! We are going to chill out all day and then go down to the restaurant in El Chorro later. Our host Julie has telephoned ahead to reserve us a good table. The day is overcast and there’s a brisk wind up here. I wouldn’t call it cold but this morning I have ... read more

We are in El Chorro. People generally only come here to do one of three insane things…to rock climb, to ride horses or to go hiking. All three are scarey propositions in our book but for some strange reason we are here to do the latter. So, this morning we (I!) have tickets booked to walk the ‘El Caminito del Rey’ (The King's Little Path). Once labelled ‘the most dangerous walk in the world’, and a magnet for thrill seekers, this path has now been revamped and deemed semi-safe to walk. Numbers are restricted, hence the need to reserve tickets months in advance. The walkway, which is 1m wide and set along the face of a steep sided mountain with a gorge 100m below, was built for construction workers at the nearby hydro electric plants at ... read more

We’re leaving Granada today and heading to the mountains. We’ve decided to have a lie in and leave at 9am. Hopefully the rush hour traffic will have died down? No chance! We decide it’s easier to lug our cases up the steep hill to our parking spot than to have Ian do a several point turn twice on the incline. At the moment the car is pointing in the right direction to leave town! We make it on to the first motorway, it’s the same one we took yesterday. But today we are going in a different direction and because we are driving in the right, the changeovers are a little less seamless. We also have to change several times and do come unstuck at one particular point. The trouble is that they do have a ... read more

It’s a very early start today. We have planned a day trip to the twin towns of Úbeda and Baeza, but they are 150 km from Granada. We don’t want to drive in rush hour, but neither do we want to be too late as the Spanish have a horrible habit of shutting up shop to siesta for hours on end in the afternoons so we have to get cracking early! It’s still dark as we leave the hotel at 7am. There is no daylight saving here! Our rental car, way up the hill from our hotel is still in one piece, that’s a relief. We reluctantly vacate our position on the road fearing that it will be gone when we return. Seriously the ‘public parking in the street may be possible’ should be reported to ... read more

We overslept this morning. The people in the room above were scraping chairs and having showers at 1am. Honestly, this hotel appears to have zero sound proofing! Today we are walking back down to the city to take advantage of all the free sightseeing that the lady in one of the monuments told me about yesterday! What skin flints we are…but why pay if you don’t have to? We have started our day at El Banuelo, a Roman style bath house. We enter a house with a courtyard, then through to the three bathrooms behind. First the cold room, followed by the warm. All have moorish skylights representing the moon and stars. A third room, which we can only see from behind a barred gate, has a pretty blue and white tiled floor. The baths are ... read more

We’re up early again, though not quite as early as yesterday. Today is forecast to be 29 degrees so we want to attempt to beat the heat. We take our usual stroll down the steep hill that leads us in to town. It’s pleasantly cool and even more pleasantly tourist-free. I do love being the ‘only tourist in town’. To be honest there are a few other independent travellers milling around but not enough to ruin my photos. :-) We start off in the cathedral area…which was heaving yesterday, but also impossible to photograph in the bright sun. First there is a pretty fountain with a huge statue above. They haven’t turned the water on yet but I do get some decent shots of the statue. And then some interesting buildings opposite which I didn’t even ... read more
