We want to avoid the heat and possible crowds…given that we have been told there is a fiesta today. Ian has planned a walking route to cover the other side of the historic town that we did not see yesterday and a bit if the new town. It’s a small place anyway so have plenty of time to wander.
As yesterday, the downhill trot to the old town gate is a breeze. Now it’s another steep climb up a cobbled street followed by another descent down a well made path. This takes us to the Arab Baths and then the Arab Bridge. We have great views across the expanse of open countryside.
Now the inevitable steep climb via cobbled steps back up to the New Bridge. There’s only a scattering of people about so we have chance to get some reasonably uncrowded photos.
We’ve puffed our way back up to the high point at New Bridge and we can see it’s starting to get busier now. It’s 10am and Ian leads me to a spot with views over the valley and on into the new town passing a huge bullring on the way.
New town also has
some pretty whitewashed streets and there’s a big wedding taking place too. Ladies and gents in all their finery and classic cars line the street. There’s a lot of tooting go on, as is the custom here, and a lady dressed in full flamenco with tall black head-dress sails past. New town also has its modern shopping streets which are also very busy.
Now we are crossing back over the bridge to the old town and heading for a palace that we passed last night. We’ve seen quite a few palaces this trip but this one is a bit different because it dates back to Roman times. We start off in the inner courtyard area, moving out to the cool fountained gardens. Back inside, we climb to the first and second floors where there us an extensive museum with reconstructions based on archaeological finds.
We’re starting to feel peckish so we head back over the bridge to the new town to find a tapas bar. We find a lovely little family run place that is popular with the locals - always a good sign! No one is driving so Ian has a beer and I decide to sample
one of the local sherries. We order three different tapas, all of which are delicious.
Now it’s almost time for siesta. We walk back up to the pension and it’s time for a couple of hours zizz. I could have probably zizzed longer but for the fact that there are two large rocking chairs in the room which both annoyingly squeak very loudly…Ian has fallen asleep on one of them and appears to be rocking himself as well as snoring.
Siesta over, maybe I will go for a swim? There are no signs of any bugs in the pool today. A German couple have arrived and are asking for help with the wifi connection. I go over and see if I can help. They have a massive apartment, unlike ours where you could not swing a cat…did they pay more I wonder, or have we been fleeced?
Anyway I sort out the password it’s just a misinterpretation of the numbers for letters and they are connected. He wants to watch F1, I wish I hadn’t helped him now. :-)
He has also just been for a swim. The water is cold and he has debugged the
pool. Ugh, it’s obviously a thing here then. I saw one yesterday, it was massive I say. Yes, they were also massive but he doesn’t mind and has moved them. Oh dear, they are obviously the flying kind that I encountered once before in Kenya…we were at Treetops and one landed on me, I screamed and everyone turned round and said SHHH! Much as I love my swims I just cannot risk it! Shame as I don’t think any of our other places have pools.
