If someone asked you to show them what America is all about in 30 seconds, what would you tell or show them? For Spain the answer comes much easier, show them a flamenco dance and in less than half a minute they will see for themselves just what this amazing country is all about. The passion on the stage is all consuming, from the dancer to the guitarist and just the awe of the crowd, you cant help but be drawn in. You also have the option of taking them to a bullfight, humanitarian or not, it is an event that has to be experienced. The graceful dance of the matador as he plays with the bull, narrowly escaping a fatal blow from the 800 pound beast. Or you can just take them to Plaza Mayor ... read more

Hi everyone, Computer access again today so that is good. Last night we stayed at an amazing albergue at Ligonde. Ligonde is a little hamlet and where we stayed was a converted cowshed and run by a Christian group. The lovely young women who cooked dinner for us were volunteers and there for two weeks. They went to uni. in the States. There were two men who were in charge. They were lovely and very kind. Downstairs was the dining, kitchen and lovely bathroom with showers and toilets all nicely tiled. Upstairs was very cosy!!!! 10 beds very close together but I was fine - Marian on one side of me and a Japanese lady on the othe side. The men were on the other side of the wall. Janet, I was wondering which bed you ... read more

Awoken to the sound of Captain McFadden advising we were 1 hour from Bilbao it was now 8am Spanish time, 7am British and ships time. Disembarking from the Pride of Bilbao we headed stupidly to the centre of Town, to find the Guggenheim museum. Tom Tom was pretty on the ball but not quite a coconut. We were along side but parking was nowhere to be seen, putting this together with the Spanish drivers we deicide to abort the mission, Take the photo and head. We decided to head to Salamanca with a camp site in mind, arriving at the destination the campsite was no longer there. Campsite number two Dejavue. The sun was pounding in both getting a little on the frustrated side we pulled over regained that “Kiwi get up and go and ... read more

Very long day of travel yesterday. Once again on 2 or 3 hours of sleep. But the area we are staying in (Las Ramblas) is very exciting - There are all kinds of performers on the streets and shops and restaurants and people everywhere. Last night I went to a tapas bar with my roommate and our friend - the group of three was quite nice in comparison to the huge groups of 10 or 15 people we have all been running around in. We didn't really order the right things and ended up spending a lot on a very small amount of food, so we are going to have to learn how to do the whole thing right next time. the calamari was good...I'm getting kind of hungry thinking about it now. I will ... read more

We had a good, safe trip via Madrid to Moscow yesterday. Well, it started off a little slow! The Iberia Airlines plane we were flying on had some sort of technical glitch (which was sort of announced in Spanish and then sort of in English) but we understood only that the plane had started to board about 30 minutes late and sat there for an hour and a half on the ground. We had good comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Bill slept. I wiggled then decided it was foolish to try to sleep so I sewed on my needlework. By the time I finished two rows the lights came on and we had breakfast and then landed. I think we were about the only people lucky enough to have a long enough layover in Madrid ... read more

Torej, konec ugibanj. MADRID IMA NEDELJSKI AZIJA-STYLE MARKET. I LOVE MADRID. Poleg tega ima tudi churrose s čokolado. Burek is so last year! Ob 4h ponoči se tu je churrose. In točno to sva z Nino naredili v soboto zvečer. Najprej sva šli v "njen" bar na sever mesta, kjer sva zvrnili nekaj clar (clara = pivo + limonada, torej neke vrste radler).

So 7 of my friends and I traveled to Barcelona this weekend, and it was a disaster from the beginning... We thought we were being all organized by buying our bus tickets ahead of time online and booking a hostel online as well. We all just brought bookbags so we wouldn't have to carry around luggage, and honestly a few clothes is all you really need. So the journey began... 13:00 We are done with class and head home to grab our bags 14:00 Meet to walk to the bus station together. We were unable to print our tickets, because no computer labs let you print... First, we cannot find the ticket office and the Spanish lady at another bus office is not being helpful. We then learn that the office is closed until 15 ... read more

Today I slept in a little bit, and then went for a nice walk along the river with 2 of the people from the hostel. By pure chance from our conversation, I discovered that one of the guys I was with had a mutual friend in Toronto. Also one of my room mates the previous night who went to McGill (yet another Canadian Jew) knew some of the people I had gone to camp with in the past. And again by pure chance, all of the people in my room last night were Canadian Jews. It´s funny how the people who you try to get away from for a while have a tendency to follow :) - it is great fun. After the river we walked to Parque de María Luisa - a beautiful urban park ... read more
