MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 7: Day trip: Mundaka to Bilbao and back Distance: 114 km (of 8,667 km total) Today we took the bike to Bilbao. Stopping at the next town after Mundaka, Berneo, we found an open café and had brunch: coffee + Basque-style tapas again. Zak who has an eye for these things, suspected the place to be a mafia den, which is totally plausible since the characters inside the café and those standing guard outside could really have been straight out of a godfather movie! Going to Bilbao, we took the mountain road. The landscape is very Pyrenees-like. Arriving in Bilbao we saw a very industrial city with a highly concentrated population. We found the Gugenheim museum, a futuristic, strangely-shaped building. Checked out exhibition of German painter, Anselm Kieffer: Dark! Very dark! But interesting ... read more

We finally made it to our apartment in Barcelona. The plane ride was luxurious. Lufthansa business class is pretty nice. Our plane ride from Denver to Frankfurt (9hours) felt like an hour or two. We were served champagne before we even left the gate and we had turbo seats with big tvs that reclined into beds and gave us massages. After a stint in Germany and Switzerland, we made it to Barcelona and met Frederic who showed us to our beautiful apartment. We promptly bought some cava (spanish champagne) for $5 and had a great dinner of local cuisine at 11pm like the locals do. We are only a few blocks from the Sagrada Familia in a great part of town. Everyone has been extremely nice and friendly. We are looking forward to hitting the ... read more

Hola chicos, We started off our expedition to Spain via the trains which always seem to promise one type of adventure or another. As we chugged along we passed by little inlets of villages by the Mediteranean. Just when we think we are getting used to our incredible surroundings, new and equally beautiful sights amaze us. Just to clarify the imagery: Sam and I are staring out the window crying (because everything is so overwhelming and we still can´t believe we´re here) and then the train shuts down. Used to the quirky train rides in Europe, we sat in our seats nonpulsed. Suddenly we heard the car door slam open and four men holding guns walk onto the train. They were all dressed like ordinary travellers minus one man standing at the back of the ... read more

We arrived in Barcelona on Thursday May 31 and my cousin Dawn picked us up at the airport. She is building a villa just outside of Barcelona and we were supposed to stay there but apparently people in Spain have their own work schedules and even when they say they will be there, they won´t be most of the time, so needless to say the vill is not livable yet. She told us we would be staying with her at her boyfriend and his roommates house. We had lunch on the way home from the airport at a small restaurant in the town she lives in, and lunch in Spain is the biggest meal and the most important meal of the day. The have a huge lunch before 4pm and then all stores and restaurants ... read more

After a terrible 3h train ride involving a screaming and crying child sitting next to me, I arrived in Valencia. Unfortunately I arrived late in the afternoon so I didn´t have time to see everything I wanted, including the beach and the America´s Cup'festivites that were going on for the race. The old city was very nice though, the streets were winding, and at every intersection there was a plaza set up with bars and cafes. Once again at my hostel, there were tons of Canadians, in fact at least 85% of the people were. I met 2 guys from Edmonton, 1 who had moved to Phoenix, 1 from Montreal, and another from Toronto. I also met 2 Jewish kids from Michigan.... read more

MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 6: Dune du Pilat to Mundaka Distance: 328 km (of 8,667 km total) We woke up in a thick fog Most of the dune had totally disappeared in the clouds. Realizing we wouldn't be able to see much, we decided there was no point in climbing up this morning either. There was nothing to do but pack and leave for Spain. No stop in beautiful Biarritz either, since the weather wasn't that great. Then we thought we'd stop by in San Sebastian, but the weather was still not that great. Upon entering Spain, the scenery changed: We saw tightly-packed apartments, laundry spilling out of balconies and windows of high-rise apartments against the backdrop of the beautiful Pyrenees mountains. We kept on going until the weather cleared up and we ended up in Gernika ... read more

Again today it is nice and sunny here! I can't hit the beach until later, because I have a doctor's appointment. I somehow hurt my knee walking around so much. I thought it would get better, but Noooooo of course because I'm in Spain, something bad has to happen. I have my appointment at 3 and then I'll know where to go from there. Hopefully nothing is terribly wrong with it?! I'm competely over being homesick and love this city. It is nice to be able to walk to everything. Instead of driving to the supermarket, I walk 5 minutes to one. Also, today in class our teacher taught us all of the drinks that are popular here and how to order the, etc... That would never happen in the states... "So this drink is ... read more
