A beautiful, warm day (well relatively - 19) for our (self drive) winery tour in La Rioja (with Kate, because it's a public holiday in Spain). And she changed the sat nav to English, always helps! Headed first to a town called Haro (about an hour northwest of Calahorra) where there are lots of wineries. We had appointments for a tour and tasting at one winery and a tasting at another (have to make appointments and pay, can't just walk in and taste). The first was CVNE, (also known as CUNE because of a printing error way back when) which was established in 1879, and is a family owned and run winery. We had a most interesting tour (even though I struggled with the accent) and then tasted 2 wines - red - were ok. Then ... read more

Having set our alarm for 7am as a bit concerned about possible road closures due to the procession of the battle of Rioja at Haro, we were rudely awakened at 06.45 by fire crackers and groups gathering around the site all in their white with red kerchiefs and clutching containers of red wine!! Locals as well as the organised groups on trips from U.K. we're heading out of the camp, so we were up and leaving ourselves, by 8.45. It appeared that there were coaches ferrying all taking part in the battle to the area where it takes place......there were going to be some very sore heads that evening as after the battle, the fun would continue all day and evening. We arrived at Bilbao 5 hours before sailing time and I was already nervous as ... read more

Last two days in Haro . Yesterday we drove to a small town Miranda de Ebro, passing through the fields of vines and lower slopes of the mountains. Not many people around.....done know where they all go as it wasn't the weather for hiding in the shuttered homes from the sun, although it eas 26-28 degrees, in between a few real torrential downpours rolling in and out over the mountains. In the evening we walked out to the largest bodegas to take photos of their amazing buildings and to get a different perspective of the town on foot. Today , after very heavy showers late evening, and more promised today, we drove in to town and walked many of the old streets of the town, again realising what a very pretty place it is! The town ... read more

Yesterday we visited Valladolid.....Graham wanted to pay a visit to another of the towns where"Sharpe" is set!! To be honest, it hasn't Got much else going for it!! We wandered the Plazas and took photos of the various ancient churches and watched the Sunday ritual of Spanish families promenading -the ladies in their posh frocks and the children all scrubbed and turned out in their Sunday best!!! I've also noticed the number of sons taking their elderly mothers out for coffee or lunch on a Sunday, so, Adam, Olly and Ben, dad has said he'll quite happily draw up a Rota for you to take me off his handsπŸ˜„ Today we headed back to Haro in the beautiful Rioja region, for our last three days, before we set sail from Bilbao on Thursday. We were warned ... read more

Drove into Haro today to get some photos of the beautiful church, some of the Bodegas and a number of storks nesting, then a shop at the Simply supermarket, where, at the checkout, we discovered we had a large pack of nappies in our trolley!!!! Grahams fault, filling someone else's!!!! Of course!!!! Afternoon spent, sheltering from the 29 degree heat, while packing away awning and other items ready for an early departure tomorrow, heading 250 miles nearer Santiago de Compostella. 31 degrees forecast for next couple of days. Such a shame that the lovely large swimming pool on site is empty!!!!!!! Obviously not warm enough for the Spaniards yet!... read more

Day 4-Haro. Today, 27 degrees, Pamplona, 82 miles. Walked the famous rout of the bull fiesta-Encierro- where 6 bulls are released each morning to run the cobbled streets of the old town. Graham was most upset that he'd got the date wrong, as he'd planned to push me out in front of the way of getting the weight off I suppose!! sampled a local dish for lunch, lamb Navarra, a lamb casserole.....let's just say, I think the lamb must have been chased all around meat left on it! On journey back to base , stopped at a pretty village, Puenta la Reina, on route to Santiago de Compostela, which has a five arched bridge-several pilgrims were walking the route! Also saw storks nesting on the spires of a church. See photos on Facebook. Last ... read more

Day 3 in Haro. Another lazy morning soaking up the warm sun and in the afternoon, a trip to Santo Domingo de la Calzada , travelling through valleys of vineyards, with towering mountains beyond....and still a little snow on the summits. On to San Milan de la Cogolla, where there's a beautiful monastery nestled in the foothills, surrounded by the most amazing Bodegas, all making and selling their Rioja!!! The buildings and restaurants are definitely a match for the ones in South Africa!! Am still unable to upload my photos and Graham has decided he can't stand the strain of helping me and has left me at the bar on Saturday evening... read more

Day two. Haro. Lazy start to the day as we decided to put up our new, THIRD awning, in four years......each one chosen is an easier option! There was a quick aborted attempt last night, when after half an hour Graham decided that some vital parts must have been left out and so we wouldn't be able to use it for the whole trip. Fresh start this morning and success......apart from it falling on Grahams head once and him walking into the cross bar twice, before we'd raised it high enough πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ This afternoon we visited a lovely old town Vitoria, which has two cathedrals, one from 12 century and the other completed in 1873. We got back to the site to find that our quiet little area has been filled with young Spanish families, here ... read more

After a rocking and rolling crossing up to about 2.30am-while Graham slept peacefully, I eventually slept fairly well. We had a happily uneventfull disembarkation at Bilbao and the satnav didn't let us down. Temperature dropped to 7.5 and rain at one stage as we came through a couple of high mountain ranges. The site where we'll be for our first 5 nights is in Haro, which is a very important wine producing rioja region . There are many beautiful bodegas in the town, all lovely buildings and some decorated with vivid coloured flowers. Glad to report that as we settled down to dinner and wine this evening the sun is out and we can see that there's a lovely mountain range towering up from just beyond the caravan site. A successful first day.....and I made a note ... read more

Today we are heading to Haro, a small town in the Rioja wine region of Spain which is well known for their red wines, also because where is not much else to do in Miranda de Ebro. After a little look around the town we headed to the Bodegas (wine cellar) area of town for a tour and wine tasting at Gomez Cruzado Bodega. This was a great couple of hours with the tasting of 1 white wine and 4 wonderful red wines (and the tasting glasses where not small). After this we headed back over the bridge to the town for a lovely lunch in the sun of the town square. Then it was back to Bodega Roda for a look at their underground cellar and this time tasting of 1 red wine and a ... read more
