So am now here in Santiago. Have to say it was a little bit of a let down arriving here. Perhaps let down is the wrong phrase really. I guess we, everyone has said the same, were expecting excitement and jubilation in front of the cathedral. This didn´t happen in fact most were sad. Don´t get me wrong Santiago is a beautiful town and I could definately spend a few days here wandering the streets eating fantastic seafood and spending time with good friends. Sam summed it up best yesterday with an analogy of the Wizard of Oz. The Camino is our yellow brick road and Santiago was our wizard. However, upon our arrival we found out that Santiago was nothing really. What makes the real Camino is those tinmen, Scarecrows and Lions we meet along ... read more

So now I am in Glacia and only a few short days from Santiago. I don´t really know how to feel about it all. It has only been a little over 3 weeks since I started but as I said before the Camino is strange and it feels like you live a life out here. However, I do feel good about myslef, my situation and the future. Am quite looking forward to it all. Even if I don´t know what it will be. But I digress. I´m currently in Pontmarin in Glacia. Glacia is a really beautiful province with green rolling hills and pretty little hamlets smelling sweetly of cow manure (that part is not so pleasant). Crossed the border from Leon a couple of days ago and spent the night in a place called O ... read more

The Atlantic coast in winter - with the wrong roll of the dice it could be death by precipitation... ...We'll that roll of the dice went completely against me. After a scenic route from Palermo, via Milan and Madrid, the descent into a huge hailstorm in Santiago was something of shock: The rest of the journey had been through cloudless skies, chasing a drawn out sunset across the south of France, the horizon dividing the dark blue of the sea and the lighter blue sky with a band slowly melting from yellow to purple - then finally sealing together in a seamless blue. Taxis were not much in evidence on arrival (at midnight) but eventually one came before I succumbed completely to hypothermia. That my first purchase in Spain was a brolly says it all; rain, ... read more

¡Hola! So I just got back from being in Galicia, which is in the northern part of Spain right above Portugal. Wow, this region was definitely the prettiest area that I have seen in Spain so far...there are actually trees and grass (you would like it Dad!) It was kind of cold, but overall an incredible trip. My trip to Galicia actually began Wednesday night with Shaley´s 21st birthday. We went out to eat Mexican food. I was looking forward to some bean burritos (haha) but alas, they didn´t have any on the menu so I had to settle for enchiladas y margaritas :) After the mexican food, we went to a tiny cafe were we had some of the best sangria I have ever tasted! If anyone wants to come visit me in Spain, I ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 5 Spain. October 3rd 2004 Galicia From the Picos mountains to Santiago de Compostela. The Picos snared our hearts with its ragged mountains; its ever-changing skies and stunning green valleys etched in our minds. But after four days we both felt that we needed a break from mountain driving Picos style: narrow, steep, hair-pins, sheer drops, no parking places, no passing places and no turning places. Certainly not motor-home friendly, but oh, so very, very beautiful. With some fabulous hikes and equally stunning weather we had ventured on foot high into the mountains and will remember forever our first hike which we called, 'walking with choughs', because both Alpine and Common Choughs accompanied us most of the way. A small group of chamois posed for us on the rocky hills and griffon ... read more

This is the story of our journey across the Camino Frances from St Jean to Santiago de Compostela by foot - Finally completed for those who have nagged us into it… writing the blog was almost as demanding as walking the route! Almost... Anyway to answer the obvious we wrote the blog as we got sick of answering the same questions - no we are not mad, and yes we enjoyed it, and yes we would gladly do it all again. Why - well while we are both pagans, travelling ancient pilgrimage trail has great appeal, as in NZ while the tramping is great we don’t get to tread on Roman roads or sleep over the bones of saints, so we (perhaps naively) though why not. We didn’t expect (or want) to be forgiven for our ... read more

Leon, Spain I am in Leon. Behind me, there are 470 kilometers of exploring the anatomy of my feet. When I come to an end, I am sure I will know every muscle of my body. I am very close to being broke, but I am sure that I will make enough money, when I arrive to Santiago. I would need someone who would want to buy me the ticket from Santiago, Chile to Fidji with the date 23th of December, 2004 and then Fidji - Sydney. I will pay you the money on your bank account afterwards, until February, 2005. I would also appreciate any information about USA, Mexico and South America. Hasta luego, we hear each other, when I arrive to Santiago. Matej *** This is a report from the archive. Whole story, photos, ... read more
