(N) We overnighted in Madrid before our onward connection to Lima tomorrow at 12h30. The hotel was only a few mins walk from Plaza Santa Ana, which sounded great in an article I had read recently. Even though we just dropped the bags at the hotel, it was still midnight before we got to the Plaza. We were amazed at the large amount of people still and drinking at that time! Great nosh of tortilla espanola, potato salad (already indulging my carbo cravings!) and tomatoes, in a typical Spanish tapas bar: big counter, small wooden tables with well-worn marble tops, and paper serviettes strewn all over the floor. Having washed down the above with local lager, we called in at a couple more similar places before heading back.... read more

Ok, where do I start? Well, let´s just say i wasn´t so lucky catching my flights this time as i did last trip... So, i´m going to be on my fifth flight in a day and a half... So, I started at LAX to Cincinati, Cincinati to Atlanta, Atlanta to La Guardia, La Guardio to JFK (via taxi, hence part of my blog title), JFK to Madrid, and now Madrid to Barcelona... Let me just breathe a sigh of relief here. Ok, so there was suppose to be train somewhere in here but the train service has a holiday this Sunday, so that´s why i´m gonna be taking a plane to Barcelona. I have met some interesting characters. My flight to Madrid, i sat next to quite attractive girl that looked a bit like Selma Hayek ... read more

MONDAY: Our first visit today was to Interes, Spain's government organization responsible for attracting FDI. The presentation was good in terms of presenting Spain's advantages and key attraction factors for corporations. They also presented a few case studies of companies they had worked with, which did a good job of showing us what kind of services they offer and how they interact with companies. Our next stop was Telefonica, a Spanish telecommunications company. The part of this company that stood out for me was their ability to develop solutions for the "bottom of the pyramid" consumer segment. For example, in Latin America, where many consumers cannot afford individual home or mobile phones, Telefonica has installed local community centers with telephones and internet. They have also developed websites for their services targeted specifically to the elderly and ... read more

Okay, so this is what it is all about...sick of hanging around London waiting for Adam´s registration to come through, we decided to bugger off to Spain for a couple of weeks. We booked two flights to Madrid and Adam booked some accommodation in Madrid over the phone and we were ready to go. Adam´s Spanish was very impressive! Well, we soon arrived in Spain and realised that speaking Spanish in Spain was not going to be as easy as first thought. Spanish people speak sooooooooooooooo quickly that you just have to sit there and listen for "buzz words". We´re not in Mexico anymore, this is the real deal! Madrid is a beautiful city and so clean. There will definitely be no dog poo incidents here like we have had in other European cities...I am ... read more

A group of us went to a bullfight tonight at Las Ventas (I think I got the right name). One of the guys in our group said the ring at Plaza de Toros holds 25,000 people and is the largest in the world. After watching the fight, I can see both sides of the argument - on one hand, I really respect the art of the sport, but on the other hand, it would be better if they didn't kill the bull (or at least didn't stab it multiple times before they killed it). Although the bull is injured, weak, and disoriented by the time the matador gets in the ring, the cape waving and dodging of the bull really is quite beautiful - almost like a dance. I could definitely appreciate the talent it ... read more

We made it to Madrid today. We had a very interesting plane flight that makes for a pretty good travel story. I was sitting next to the window, my roommate sat in the middle seat, and a Portuguese guy sat in the aisle seat. The Portuguese guy was with a big group of guys who were all wearing matching shirts. He told us they were with a bachelor party and that the shirts made a joke out of the groom's "last night of freedom" and each guy had a number on the back of his shirt (the groom's was 0 because he was getting married, the guy with #1 was the next to get married, and so on - the guy sitting next to us was #11 out of 11 or 12 guys!) So, anyway, ... read more

Ever since Liz made the first Guest appearance in India i have been wondering on a regular basis how likely it was that i could get into this blog. By the time Anne-Marie showed up in Argentina i was running out of ideas and Catherine and Patrick were running out of countries. Luckily their flight was changed meaning a stopover in Madrid was a likely possibility and seeing as it was a lot more affordable to get to Madrid from Granada than to Brazil i thought to myself BINGO... So on the 11th of April i arranged to meet our two favourite world travellers in Madrid Bus Station on their definitely last stop before home. As the arranged time approached everyone in the bus station started to take on Cat or Pat appearances (bald patricks, ... read more

Driving towards Lleida had its own interest. In broad daylight, Good Friday, spaced at roughly 1klm intervals, by the side of a busy national Rd, nothing else aound - ladies of the night (or are they ladies of the day at that hour), sitting on plastic chairs with mobile phones stuck to their ears. That´s one tough gig. I thought how desperate they looked but then realised they were only half as desperate as the clients I assume must turn up. And what do they do with the chairs while they are fullfilling their job description? LLeida was always going to be Logisticsville. email - tick washing - tick. Never thought I could get so excited about clean clothes. car clean - tick. A story in itself. Remember Penny, FICHA means token and MONEDA means coin. ... read more
