For my fourth overseas trip, Shea and I decided to venture over to Spain. We took advantage of a special deal Contiki was offering where if you book by a certain date, the second person flies for only $100. After splitting the airfare in half, our round trip tickets to Spain via Germany were only about $450 per person. Months of planning and anticipation had finally arrived, it’s time to leave for Spain! As usual for me, my procrastination made the morning of May 18th into a mad rush to get some last minute things done. I had organize my finances, start packing, purchase some things at the store, as well as look for a battery charger. We left Simi Valley at around 12:15 to pick up Shea and head to the airport. But first ... read more

This weekend was the long awaited Las Vacas Locas (translated is means The Mad Cows) tour of Madrid...took the Friday off work and headed to Madrid where we went from a comfortable 20 deg to 35 to 40 deg.......fantastic to feel that hot again......I joined the tour for the final weekend, the guys having already been away for 8 days........and it showed. Sticking to the adage that what happens on the trip stays on the trip I really can't elaborate on specifics. What I can say about Madrid is that it is a great place......we took a city tour in an open top bus and got to see the Real Madrid soccer ground as well as many of the city's buildings etc. On the Saturday we went to see the MAD COWS play on the Madrid ... read more

I have been practicing my Spanish for a while.........and felt confident enough to go around Spain just a month after my surgery. My doctor said I drive her crazy. My surgeon said I should go ahead and celebrate life. Between those 2 medical opinions, I favored my surgeon's advice. Long Trip to Madrid From Manila With my nephew Ryll and good friend Emy in tow, we braved the long trip from manila to madrid. Left 5 pm Monday; arrived noon next day in Madrid. It was a long trip via Hongkong and Paris. And that is not counting the 3 hour wait in each airports! The Air France flights all went smoothly, and we actually enjoyed all the in-flight meals and movies. Talking about first experience in good old Madrid..........we hired a cab as soon as ... read more

I'm usually not the sophisticated culture buff, trying my best to stay clear of museums and such. But I have some time to kill in Madrid, the home of some of the finest art museums in the world. And, since my student ID gets me in for free, what the hell...? My choice is Museo Del Prado, one of three world-class art establishments in the city. The choice is mostly based on the fact that this is where the classical art hangs. Paintings you can actually determine what they are portraying, as opposed to "modern" art. Picasso fans, do not bother here... There certainly are a vast number of paintings. Probably a very impressive collection, had I been better versed in the area. My hope is to find the work of Goya, one of few Spanish ... read more

I arrived back in Madrid in the early hours, but the next train to France was not leaving until 3.30 in the afternoon. There was no real incentive to leave the station and venture into the city, so I stayed, playing cards and talking to an American girl whom I had met on the train. She had come to Europe to travel with her boyfriend, but had promptly dumped him the moment they arrived. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor guy. They had arranged to meet in Amsterdam and she was on her way there now, despite the fact that she claimed she had fallen in love with some waste-of-space Dutch hippy. She was also running a couple of days late, and I’d be very surprised if he was still waiting when she ... read more

Another night on a train, but this was a little more comfortable as the luggage racks and seats doubled-up as what were actually quite comfortable beds. Upon arrival in Madrid, we went for a much-needed shave and freshen up, which went some way to help us get over two nights of sleeping on trains. The underground system in Madrid was absolutely immaculate, coming only a close second to the one in Singapore (but without all the threats of fines). We got a ten-ticket pack between us and set off to see the sites. We found Madrid very uninspiring, so we ended up looking for something else to do. After a quick check in our books, we decided to travel out to a nearby town called Toledo. Allan and I did return here again several years later ... read more
