The outside day began with a walk to the Metro which took us to the Funicular to take us to the cable car atop Parc de Montjuic. From there it was sensational views over Barcelona Harbour, Marina Port Vell, Barcelona City plus more. It was through no astute planning that we decided to take the cable car “down”, however, very fortunate, because there was only another couple in our able car. The cable cars coming up were squashed in like sardines and the lines and wait below, long. Jane gossiped the whole journey down, missing most of the all-round views, whilst I happily went snapping away and soaking in the sights at the same time. A cruise ship had entered harbour and was turning around as if on a three penny piece. We travelled over the ... read more

If anyone asks us what was the major thing we noticed (and liked) about Barcelona, we would respond by saying that every street and road had trees both sides and on many occasions down the middle too. The trees stood out and that’s impressive. There is no building in Barcelona taller than any building in our city of Perth. A very uniform height throughout. A huge proportion of the residents live in apartments/flats. Barcelona is a city that benefited enormo...usly from having the Olympic Games in 1992. It transformed the city. Many areas were developed and redeveloped. The result was that the people benefited post Games. Many locals have spoken of that. There has been no negativity. Today we used the Hop On Hop Off bus to explore a greater area of Barcelona. Naturally we clicked ... read more

It would not surprise me that during the writing of this recap of today that I fall asleep, not because my brain strains in its endeavours to write a literary masterpiece, but simply that’s how tired I (we) are. We pour over the various maps and information the night before, and the morning too, deciding what we are going to do and see, the route we must take and the ‘gear’ we will carry in the day pack. We hit the paths, streets and laneways with full enthusiasm and preparedness. Fast forward to moment we returned to our room where we dropped everything and slumped onto the bed. My skinny, crippled feet were killing me! Jane had efficiently called the shots today with map in hand and me following behind trusting her 100%. We set a ... read more

Today represents one-third of our way through this planned journey … and … we are still together … easy as. Our train journey took us through countryside that was high, dry, and surrounded by and crisscrossed by mountain ranges. We passed through and by, many very small villages and through numerous tunnels and over numerous bridges. The land use varied from small agricultural holdings of vegetables to orchards and vineyards to quarry based industry. Thankful to be in Barcelona it didn’t take us long to find and be checked in to our accommodation at Hotel Abbot, very centrally located and close to our planned activities. Shopped for fresh food which resulted in Jane concocting up some magical meal in our room. We adjusted our mode of travel plan for next week re: car hire cancelled and ... read more

Today we had another late start of a morning waking up around 9:30 am. We took another one of Rita's suggestions for breakfast, and went to Patisseria Hoffman. Not having our internet synced up, it was a bit of a challenge to find on the narrow, windy streets within El Born, but the extra walking just meant we could consume some extra calories, right? Cody had a strawberry cheesecake croissant and a cinnamon roll croissant, I had a had a ham and cheese croissant. Everything was delicious! Cody claims it's the best croissant he's ever eaten, so if you like croissants I guess you should book a trip to Barcelona ASAP with that endorsement. We will probably be eating there again tomorrow. :) We next went walking in downtown Barcelona to the coast. The weather was ... read more

We had an early start to our day with a 9:00 am flight out of Lisbon. We managed to hustle down our street to the front of the Museo de Fado between calling an Uber and them arriving, as we do not have cell service beyond our WiFi areas. Luckily, this was a trek down the street with our luggage versus the trek up a few days ago. We enjoyed breakfast in the airport, Cody embarking on a McDonalds meal. It hit the spot for him and gave him the taste of home he was looking for. On the plane, we finished our first complete crossword of the trip, as they are extremely hard puzzles, we both napped til arriving in Barcelona. We landed in Barcelona around 12:00 with the time change, and navigated our way ... read more

We started the day at a photo gallery. There were two shows, one was “Women Shooting Women” and the other of photos submitted for a competition in an upcoming festival. There was a huge range in the photos including some incredibly disturbing photos that the gallery owner said were shot in a prison in either Vietnam or Cambodia. Having been to both countries we guessed Cambodia because it is much poorer than Vietnam. The photos showed men, a woman and a child each chained to the walls in prison cells that were horrific. In one shot it showed the prisoner sitting just a couple of feet from a large pile of feces. Everyone of them was skeletal. I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked because there are places where people are stoned to death. Still, it’s hard ... read more

Our day started with another early morning tour of a Gaudi building. The last residential building he designed, Casa Mila or as it is known by local, La Pedrera, the quarry. The building was innovative for its day with the first elevator in Barcelona. When it was working which was infrequently it took 7 minutes to get to the 5th floor. The building had underground parking for autos and horses, intercoms and an attic designed to enhance air flow to dry clothes quickly. By the end of his life Gaudi had moved from being anti-religion to being devout. He took private commissions to create buildings to honor God’s natural world with a caveat that he had complete artistic license. Toward the end of the construction of this building he decided he wanted to put a statute ... read more

The highlight of today was the Spanish Civil War tour…. all 5 hours of it! The guide, Frank Lloyd, is a Scotsman married to a woman from Barcelona who several years ago became completely focused on/obsessed with the Spanish Civil War. Several years ago, when he was at loose ends living in Barcelona, he noticed a plaque being installed near his home. When he investigated he saw it was to honor Francisco Boix. As a young man, Boix photographed the Spanish Civil war, was recruited by the French Foreign Legion, captured by the Germans and sent to Mauthausen concentration camp. While in Mauthausen the German used him to develop the photographs they took of the prisoners who were generally worked to death. He made copies of 20,000 negatives that were smuggled out of the camp and ... read more
