As I wrote yesterday, I lost a day in Casablanca, but gained a day in Barcelona due to air schedules. At home I have a plaque that says " When life hands you lemons, smile politely and throw them away when life isn't looking." I took that to heart today and threw those lemons away. After checking out of the hotel, which was a very nice place and in the best location I could imagine, I took the Metro to Plaza Espana. I had wanted to go to this Spanish village with shops and craftspeople making their wares. I don't remember Dearborn Village that well, but that is what it reminded me of while I was there. Originally it was for an Exposition and has all the different regions of Spain represented. I bought some small ... read more

Today was a day I had planned as a free day. The weather was so sunny and warm that I broke out my short sleeved shirts and left my jacket at the hotel. But first I needed to deal with my plane reservation for tomorrow. I was scheduled to leave Barcelona around 1, arriving in Casablanca around 1 with the time change, but when I went onto Royal Air Maroc's website, I had been moved to a 9:30PM flight without any notice. That kind of messed up my plans for Casablanca. After much brouhaha, I was able to get an agent on the phone. The best I could do was to move my reservation to 7PM. It still doesn't work well with my schedule, but at least I won't be arriving at the hotel around midnight. ... read more

Today was a great day. I found my way to the cable car that goes over the water and up to Montjuic, where the Olympic Stadium is. I didn't take time to see that, but did see some great views of the City and Mediterranean. It was nice to take some cable cars and sit while looking at the views. While I was up there, I had another "bag" lunch. It was a ham and cheese on baguette sandwich, chips, Coke and later an espresso. Will have to make dinner more exciting, because this was purely functional. Once back down near the Port, I walked along the waterfront until I came to Frank Gehry's big fish. It is a big symbol of the village, so I wanted to see it. Oddly enough, it is not a ... read more

1. The most American influence I have noticed here is in the music. There's a coffee shop that I get a cafe con leche at every day before school. Everything in the shop is in Catalan, but the music consists of Dido, Michael Jackson, Van Morrison and the like. All of the clothing stores play rap and hip hop that was popular in the US a few months ago. Clubs, bars, and metro stations all play American music. There's always someone set up in the metro tunnels playing music and hoping for a bit of extra change. Whenever the music involves more than playing a saxophone or violin, it's of American covers. On Monday I was on my way to the park and listened to a man sing, "I'm stuck in Folsom Prison, and the time ... read more

Well, after 21 hours of traveling I made it to the hotel. For some reason, this trip just didn't seem that real to me until I was in the Frankfurt Airport waiting for my connection. It was only then that I really ¨got¨what I was up to. The plane rides were fine, although I have to admit dismay at the dinner. Chicken Cacciatore again? Really? That is what I had a year and a half ago on my last long haul. But, I managed to eat it all. The short hop to Barcelona on Lufthansa was the best. They had an Asian style wrap in a flour tortilla. It was truly amazing. At the Barcelona Airport, I took a bus to the Plaza Catalunya near my hotel. With each trip I am a little more comfortable ... read more

Travel day from Madrid to Barcelona through Zaragoza, Spain The day was long. Our bus ride from Madrid to Zargoza was approximately 4 hours. However, upon arriving at Zaragoza, we visited the Basilica of the Pilar. As the story goes, thVirgin Mary appeared at a pilar in the square of this town during the Middle Ages. The Basilica was built around the pilar. Many pilgrims visit the site to kiss the pilar. The bus ride from Zaragoza to the seaside town of Calella, where our hotel was located, was another 4 hours. Of course after dinner, the kids couldn't resist walking down to the beach to put their feet into the Meditteraean Sea! ... read more

Considered as one the most high profile biking system in Europe BiCiNg, has become a force of change in the public and communal transport system of metropolitan Barcelona since its inception and launch mid of 2007. By mid 2008 I get to visit the olympic and global city of Barcelona with four my closest friends. Our first night we went out of our apartment and tried to familiarize ourselves with the streets and esquinatas of the ciudad. There were 3 notable things we've noticed that night: * graffiti ( a no-no in the middle east) * world class fine dining service (even in a corner restaurant they use wine glass) * and the bikes I've tried to check how to operate and get to use one of the bikes parked at the Plaza de Garcia Area. ... read more

Spent a good couple days here in Barcelona. The thing that initially caught me off guard here was seeing everything in Catalan. At first I thought the Spanish part of my brain was on the fritz, then realizing it looked partially French, had to take me a moment to remember this area has it's own 'official' language that looks Spanish-ish but is not (Catalan). Some of the things are comprehendable if you understand Spanish, but not knowing French, I'm not sure if it resembles French (other than being another Romance Language).. But people do speak Spanish here. It took some getting used to the "accent" here- I had little difficulty in Central/South America, but here it is a bit more lispy and flowing... It's hard to explain unless you hear it. So, took a flight from ... read more

Of course I had heard of Barcelona and I even knew it was in Spain but I had no idea what was in Barcelona other than Spaniards. It is a lovely city and I am glad we got the opportunity to visit. We actually visited the city three times: the first time was just as we arrived in Spain before we started our Workaway volunteer “job”; the second time was during one of our weekends off; and the third time was after we left the Workaway. During our first visit we stayed with Carola and Quico who are friends of a friend we met in China. When we arrived at their apartment, Quico was not yet home but Carola greeted us like good friends with kisses on each cheek. After relaxing for a bit, she gave ... read more

Our last day in Rome, headed to Barcelona, Spain. Livia was so kind to drive us in the morning. I mean, she was blessed with our presence, so it was only right of her to drive us to the airport... haha, jk. She has been a great host and friend! It has really changed our experience here for sure. Livia, you will not be forgotten! Come to Chicago and we will return the favors and hospitality. After arriving in the airport, I had to check in my carry-on bag because it was a centimeter too big. Damn airlines need to get on the same system.. need to design the bags so this DOESN'T HAPPEN. I knew it was gonna happen because it happened to me coming from London to Rome. We flew Vueling airlines, which is ... read more
