ESPAÑA...OLÉ OLÉ HOLA!! Madrid - Following my disappointment in NYC & Canada, I couldn’t wait to get to Spain/ Europe! This was yet again the end of an era – The America’s and the beginning of a new one – Europa!!!! I was super excited to see my friend Ange and explore the Mediterranean with her & my sister, Ola (who was by now the expert in the region :p). flew into Madrid from NYC - Ola split up over there and took different flights that pretty much land at same time (supposedly!). I took Air Lingus (Irish line) which was fantastic and included a stop at Dublin airport, which made really wana go to Ireland - even more than before! Met a gorgeous and somewhat stereotypical older Irish woman on the flight which made time ... read more

Today is a milestone…it is day 200 since we left Colorado Springs. It seems like a good opportunity to reflect on what this trip has given us as we have many things for which we are grateful. First, there have been very few negative things that have happened. Neither of us has been seriously ill, we have not lost anything of value and we made it safely out of the Middle East. Second, there are many, many positive things as this trip has allowed us to explore the world’s diversity of people, places and food. Meeting people from other countries has given us a perspective on both the similarities and differences in our lives. Spending the afternoon with spry, old Baobao in China who gave us a tour of his ancient town and then invited us ... read more

***www.thetattooedtraveler.com*** Barcelona is probably the greatest place I have ever been. I realize there’s a tendency to have the fondest recollections of the most recent place you’ve visited, but there’s more to it than just that. While I have wonderful memories of most of the places I’ve traveled to, very few, if any, seem like somewhere I could live for a long period of time. In every aspect— food, culture, aesthetics, climate, etc.— Barcelona is extremely welcoming and immediately comfortable. Barcelona and the Catalunya region have a distinct culture separate from the rest of Spain; people here are Catalonian first and Spanish second. Some Catalonians even want independence from Spain— we walked through a rally for sovereignty while we were there. Interestingly enough though, when Spain won the World Cup a few days later, everyone was ... read more

Up nice and early for breakfast, well 8.30. Find another cafe on La Rambla spanish omelettes this time, and coffee again only 3.90 euro, eating and drinking is so cheap in this town. We buy our tourist bus tickets after finding our way to the square at the top of La Rambla and head for Sagrada Familia, yes another cathedral, a Gaudi creation that didn't get finished before his untimely death and the hands of a tram, and is still a work in progress. What an absolutely fucking amazing building is all I can say. Pictures or words cannot describe it, you have to go there yourself to see the enormity, the complexity, what a genius. Back on the bus, this time to Park Guell which is massive, great views over the city and you guessed ... read more

Culture today, apparently! Breakfast at a cafe on La Rambla, (Spanish) ham in a baguette & a coffee for 3.90 euro each, then off to the cathedral which is massive & awesome. Lots of old people lighting candles & elaborate statues of Jesus and assorted religious icons, none of which I'd heard of, but had to do a few photos anyway, just for posterity. Actually they were pretty impressive. Next we head towards the waterfront, find a little cafe on the way for a boost. Have a bit of trouble finding Santa Maria del Mar, not quite as impressive as the cathedral but worth a few shots anyway, then we get to the Picasso Museum and it's closed (Mondays). So do a stroll on the waterfront, lots of expensive looking restaurants, so we make our way ... read more

The past few weeks have been busy, in more ways than one. I have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the job though it is a long work schedule, it is more the lack of support or team work amongst members of staff. I have started looking for new work and in the meantime have a much needed visitor from back home and a planned weekend in Barcelona. We arrived on Saturday after taking the slow train and by the time we'd found the hostel and gone out for sightseeing the gloom of twilight was already making sightseeing a little difficult. We took the metro to the Arc de Triomf and visited Parc Ciutadella. Around the Arc de Triomf was busy with locals out walking and jogging, kids on bikes and rollerblades and street performers along the edges. ... read more

We spent the day in Barcelona and despite having finished a long hard week and being in no mood to travel again it was nice to have something to do which was unrelated to work and school and Balaguer in general. I found myself being in the position of tour guide and had to admit that in all my time in Barcelona I never did huge amounts of sightseeing and really couldn't recommend the best places with any real authority. Instead we flipped through the guide book and as I commented on the places I had visited I realised I was sealing my fate of seeing them again. It didn't really matter though as we chose to visit Casa Batllo and La Sagrada Familia. I love Gaudi's architecture and both places are so beautiful they could ... read more

At the end of my second week in Balaguer I finally found the time to travel to Barcelona to meet a friend. It has been a long difficult week and I really needed to see a friendly face. Life at Centre Cultural is ok, but I do have long hours and some of the classes are particularly difficult, mainly because there are no overall behaviour codes in the school and since I never physically see the other teachers during the school day there is no time to chat about individual students or ask for advice on particular classes. There is a certain air of disorganisation in the school in general. A fornight into the term I still don't have class lists and new students arrive every lesson, and I have no idea what is expected with ... read more
