Our Last Day! How sad we are to say goodbye to Rome and to Europe! Andrea kept us busy on this last day! We started the day with a choice. Kim, Johnny myself and many of the students and chpaerones from east Yellow Medicine attended mass at St. Peter's Basilica. We were also honored to see the Angelius in St. Peter's Square... as the Pope came to the window, made a speech on peace and issued a Papal blessing to the crowd. Talk about incredible! The rest of the travellers received extra free time in Rome. They explored Venezia Piazza, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, streets and shops of a busy and hot (it was 80 degrees!) Rome. Of course they had to enjoy a gelato.... Our afternoon was also a busy one! We received a guided ... read more

All roads lead to Rome! The day of the Church.... that's what I'm calling today.... We saw the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy and then on to Rome and a tour of the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistene Chapel. It was a busy day! It really a awesome day. We had an incredible local tour guide... a Franciscan monk.... for our tour of Assisi. Unfortunately no pictures were allowed but you must google the Basilica to see the church. It was awe inspiring! The Vatican was also awe insipiring for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. We were given a tour of the vast museums, spent several minutes peering up at Michelangelo's Sistene Chapel masterpiece and walked amidst the many pilgrims within the walls of St. Peter's Basilica. We capped off the night ... read more

FLORENCE, ITALY Florence is my favorite city and I was looking forward to sharing it with the students. In the morning we took a walking tour of the city. We toured the Duomo, walked across the Ponte Vecchio, and were treated with a local guide and history of the city, archecture and art. We even got the opportunity to see a leather working demonstration at a local factory... Florence is known for its leather. In the afternoon, we had free time. Many students sampled local cuisine like the pizza, pasta and of course, gelato. Many of us climbed 463 steps up the top of the Duomo (Florence's Renaissanse cathedral). This is the first dome ever designed. The architect was Brunnescelli.... WOW! A lot of shopping, walking and touring was also done. Those who decided to go ... read more

Three countries in one day! France: Today we started out driving along the cliff highway above the French Riviera and oh the views we saw! We also visited a perfumery for a tour of the production and a chance to purchase factory products. Monacco: We were all thrilled to get the opportunity to visit the Principate of Monacco and the city of Monte Carlo this morning. We explored and saw the changing of the guards. Of course we have all decided to live there.... one problem.... it's just a wee bit expensive! Italy: Onward to Italy... we went through a tunnel and out the other side and country number three! We are staying in Florence tonight but on the way we visited the town of Pisa. We saw the Leaning Tower, Duomo and Bapistry. Tomorrow we ... read more

An adventure across southern France... Today was another beautiful day! We started the day at the city of Avignon. We went on a guided tour through the Palais des Papes... Palace of the Popes. The Popes moved the seat of the Catholic Church from Rome to Avignon in the 14th century for about 70 years to avoid conflict in Rome. They built a huge, and incredible, palace complex that reflects their wealth and influence. After Avignon we travelled on to the French Riveria. Not even a small amount of rain could dampen the adventure of exploring the narrow streets and walking along the Meditteranean Sea in Nice. The rain was short lived... by sunset the clouds were almost gone again. We have truely been lucky in the weather department! Tomorrow we had a change of plans... ... read more

On to France! Tonight we are staying in the town of Orange near Avignon, France. It was a long travel day but we visited two incredible places. First we went to the medieval castle town of Carcassone. The kids, Kim and I enjoyed exploring the old streets looking in shops and poking our heads around corners. We are becoming experts at walking on cobblestones! The second site we visited was the Ponte Garde aqueduct. This 2000 year span crosses the River Garde. Wow! What a sight it was.... Tomorrow we visit Avignon and Nice. ... read more

Barcelona, Spain Barcelona is on the coastal and we have enjoyed exploring this incredible city. The most famous landmarks in this city were designed by the architect Gaudi. We first visited Park Guell. At a first a planned community, now a city park. Gaudi's style was modernist and there is much tile-work and odd angles. We also visited La Sagrada Familia Cathedral under construction since 1882. Many of us were overwhelmed by the genius and religious significance. Along with Gaudi's works, we also visited sites from the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics. Again we had the opportunity to have paella and we shopped and experienced the main road... "The Rambla"... markets, shops, and street performers. Tomorrow, off to France. ... read more

Travel day from Madrid to Barcelona through Zaragoza, Spain The day was long. Our bus ride from Madrid to Zargoza was approximately 4 hours. However, upon arriving at Zaragoza, we visited the Basilica of the Pilar. As the story goes, thVirgin Mary appeared at a pilar in the square of this town during the Middle Ages. The Basilica was built around the pilar. Many pilgrims visit the site to kiss the pilar. The bus ride from Zaragoza to the seaside town of Calella, where our hotel was located, was another 4 hours. Of course after dinner, the kids couldn't resist walking down to the beach to put their feet into the Meditteraean Sea! ... read more
