We start walking along the wooded valley. It is a lovely, cool, crisp morning and I have light gloves on. We descend a little into Ages and have the most wonderful breakfast. People leaving say the chocolate croissants are to die for. But we opt for the generous empanadas filled with bacon, potato and vegetables. It is the recipe of the proprietor's mother and grandmother and delicious. We also had ... read more

We are now fully on the schedule and direction of the workshop. Today's focus was on a tour of Burgos. Burgos is a city of about 200,000 people with a substantial history from ancient times through Ferdinand and Isabella to modern times. Yes, Columbus was here too, after his second voyage. He had to come here because the king and queen weren't going to travel to meet him! We began this morning meeting Pilar, a local guide, who explained various sights on a walking tour of the old city. We started with a Gothic city gate that leads into a large square by the Burgos Cathedral. This gate is on the modern Camino and has been such for centuries. It is almost across the street from the hotel and leads directly to the cathedral, identified as ... read more

Today was an easy day of travel first by bus to Barcelona Airport, an Iberia flight to Madrid and then another bus to Burgos. We met most of the Productive Learning folks at Madrid Airport so now we are traveling with friends with Victor as our guide. He has been our guide in Jordan, Egypt, Thailand and Cambodia - he takes such good care of us and we just float along with all the logistics handled beautifully, we are so grateful. Our hotel in Burgos is in an old monastery building, very comfortable with confusing hallways. We just returned from dinner walking by the gorgeous Gothic cathedral. It is much cooler here, we need our jackets and it might even rain some. Tomorrow we get a tour of the city. We are open to new adventures ... read more

Up early and ready to climb. Leaving our Pension we saw Dominick, the gentleman from France, riding by. I called out his name and he stopped to chat. We were all heading to Burgos and staying the the same hotel. We made plan to meet for dinner. Today the weather was overcast with a threat of rain. We headed out and were hiking our bikes just leaving the city. Fortunately, it was a short climb. Once at the top we rode a platue for quite awhile. We stopped in the town St Juan del Ortega for breakfast. It's population said 20. The cathedral was beautiful and the cafe had delicious food and coffee. After that it was a gradual down ward descend into Burgos. Only 25 miles today. Burgos is a very large city. We spent ... read more

WEDNESDAY 8TH APRIL 2015 - Well, what a day! After hours of discussion, phone calls and deliberation by the teams, Chris, Emily, Ed and Sally reluctantly carried on north last night while Geoff and Tom stayed behind in Loja to try and see if anything could be done to revive the Merc. Sadly, after lots of phone calls to everyone conceivable and looking into every single option over the course of the last 24 hours it was determined that the car could not be fixed or transported without significant delay and expense and had to be left behind. The wonderful English chap that they met after they broke down and has been helping them with transport, translations and all sorts of assistance locally has been left in charge of the Merc and will sell or scrap ... read more

Today we took in the delights of Burgos. yesterday was the last day of a festival and the crowds were choking our progress.....so we joined in. The boulevard of stalls along the riverside sold traditional dolce (sweets), cakes, a variety of cheeses from a variety of animals, cured meats, weapons, yes weapons, and a range of artifacts and authentic souvenirs made in Pakistan and China. Jewellery and leather goods were also available and were local. All the stall holders wore traditional attire enhancing the markets theme. Knights of some persuasion on horses paraded and damsels wander the streets. It was a great night of colour, sights, traditional music and an exotic blend of food smells; sensory overload. We started today with a sleep in until 9am and after a shower we went downstairs for a breakfast ... read more

Today we rose early, ate breakfast at the albergue, and were on the road at 7.30am. Sue was on the bus again as she still had problems with her heel. Everything else is looking good and as we are having one of our rest days in Burgos, she has two days to get things right. After today, the next eight days are relatively flat, a few hills and then the meseta (the Spanish plains) lies ahead. This is the most mentally testing section, as you walk all day with the same scenery for days on end. Enough to send you 'loco' señor . I reintroduced my boots to my feet again today after 4 days of foot freedom in sandals, with the constant interruption via stones I scooped up. My feet seem OK, it's a big ... read more

We are now one third of the way to Santiago.342.4 miles to go. At Santo Domingo, they had a festival and a running of the bulls. The whole town was out with a parade thru town carrying the Virgin Mary. Later the bulls ran and young men dodged them. That night the had a feast in the square where they sold sausage sandwiches for one Euro and had free local wine. The next day we hiked to Belorado. It was a blah day mentally but our albergue had only 8 to a room. John said it felt like a resort. Relaxed the rest of that day and did laundry. Had an early dinner and went to bed before 9>30. Got up at 6 and left at 6>30 to get where we are now At San Juan ... read more
