Travel blog 19 Monday, 24th March 2008 Easter Monday Determined to see Toledo today, as driven a long way to get here. Dosed myself up and headed out of campsite just as bus came along so hopped on for short journey into the town which is entered by one of three bridges. It really is the most picturesque place. Decided I would visit the cathedral at cost of 7 euros, so agreed to meet Andy later. The cathedral was definitely worth a visit. I thought it was splendid and one of the best I have ever seen. The massive choir stalls were something in themselves. Hundreds of amazing wooden carvings at a lower level depicting scenes allegedly of the fall of Granada. Poor old Granada! Cannot believe that these related to the book I am currently ... read more

Initially we thought we’d go to Toledo on Monday the 24th since it’s approximately 45 minutes from Madrid, but read in our Spain book that the Alacazar (the main draw in Toledo) was closed on Mondays. So, we decided to go back north to Madrid after Sevilla to drop off our backpacks in the train station lockers and immediately head to Toledo to visit the Alcazar. We arrived in Toledo Thursday, 3/27 (Happy Birthday, Kyle!) Adam was really excited about seeing El Sid’s sword and part of the cross Christopher Columbus brought to the New World so we were off to figure out how to get to the Alcazar. Immediately out of the bus station, was a bus stop with people climbing aboard, but with that little amount of time, we felt too rushed to board ... read more

So it is official: 3 weeks from today I will be carrying my huge suitcases through the train station on my way to the airport!!!! Talk about exciting!!! Well, and a little scary too! I am so excited to come home, but at the same time, it feels like I just got here! I am finally starting to get the hang of things here, though I still miss the comforts of home for sure. I miss sleeping in my own bed, being able to drive, seeing my students, playing with the dogs, and walking on paved roads (not to mention SIDEWALKS!). So I thought maybe I would try to imitate David Letterman and make my own little top 10. P.S. some of these I have stolen from other people....oops... The Top Ten Ways You Know You've ... read more

¡Hola a todos! Well, now that things have returned to "normal" I don't really have much to update. Yes, I know, I still need to add the pics from Rome...I'm just being a little lazy these days! Yesterday was a bad day. And no, it's not because someone played a bad April Fools joke on me or anything (they don't celebrate April Fools Day here...actually, their equivalent of April Fools is in December a few days after Christmas). Without going into the whole story, I will just say that I had my first experience with an over-eager/perverted spanish man (actually he was moroccan) on the bus. I left the experience very upset and traumatized, but I am ok now, and the next time anything like that happens to me, I WILL be opening up a can ... read more

Probably our most entertaining trip we have encountered!! We flew out of Aberdeen and Edinburgh where we all met up in Amsterdam. We then travelled onto Barcelona on a KLM flight where after a short taxi ride we jumped on a train for a 3 hour journey south to our destination of Castelon which is the nearest town to the Spanish Football Team Villareal. However after only one hour on the train we were met by the local Police at a station in the middle of nowhere where we were taken off the train due to too much noise!! Incredible. We would not be defeated and we managed to source taxis to take us to our destination albeit 100 Euros lighter each in the pocket!!... read more

Today was a sad day :( I woke up and headed to the hostel to pick up my mom, eric, and S.G.N.Mike to take them to Madrid. Eric really wanted to see the Picasso painting Guernica, and fortunately, the Reina Sofia Museum is located right by the Madrid train station. UNfortunately for us, it is closed on Tuesdays (who the heck is closed on a TUESDAY??). I felt bad for him. We didn't have anything else to do in that part of town, so we took the metro to the Hard Rock Cafe in Madrid. That's right, we've eaten at HRC 2 times in the last 4 days.....and yes, it was amazing once again! Our waiter gave us free pepsi refills, and he even gave my mom a free coffee (she almost cried since she has ... read more

Hola again! I am back for the second to last post I will make of my trip, so let´s get to it. The following morning in Granada I awoke at 5:30 to a morning of travel. I took a taxi to the train station followed by a 4 1/2 hour train ride to Madrid a 30 min express train to Toledo, and two buses (one took me to the opposite side of Toledo I needed to go to), which finally put me at the doorstep of my hotel. Apparently the door of the hotel is always locked and the man who runs the place doesn´t seem to be around all the time, so I waited out front for about 20 min, periodically ringing the doorbell until he woke up from his afternoon nap. The room is ... read more

So, not everything is absolutely fabulous in Spain (we can't all stay in 'Stage One' forever!). I have decided to make 2 lists, one venting about what I hate/dislike in Spain, and one about what I really like about Spain. Basically, I am just really bored.... :) Things I HATE..... -the 2nd hand smoke...I am pretty sure my life expectancy has decreased by at least 5 years already -the fact that people don't clean up after their dogs on the street (apparently that's what the street washers are for) -all the hills....my legs are sore! -people staring at me whenever/wherever just because I am "different" -people thinking I don't understand what they're saying -the stupid obreros (construction workers) who cat-call when you walk by -how slow people walk (or how fast my friends walk!) -how being ... read more
