There were several items of furniture that we knew we would have to buy once we had got settled and knew how much extra space we needed. Having now unpacked everything, we now know what we what, so, list in hand, we went to Ikea in La Laguna in the north of Tenerife today. We were there for the 9am opening, as their breakfasts are very good. We had 4 slices of toast with jam, a plate of cheese and ham, one muffin, one doughnut, two coffees, two orange juices and a bottle of water and it only cost us 5 Euros (about £4.50) and very tasty it was too. Found a very helpful assistant who ordered all our items for us and also organised for the furniture to be delivered to us on Monday 11 ... read more

Weather here not too hot today. Very changeable all day. Spent the morning shopping at the local shops. Bought a new wireless printer, another extension socket, some small knick knack items and ordered a small cross cut shredder. The location of the new printer is no-where near where we use the pc on the dining table. It is connected through the Wi-Fi router that is installed for the internet. Laptop did not initially want to connect to the printer, but we persevered and it eventually worked and we are now up and running. The set up here is very different to what we had at home. A lot more digital than we are used to, but we are slowly getting used to it. Our lucky mascot is here. He is a lucky Buddha we purchased at ... read more

Called the TV provider and got the box unlocked which was easy to do. Took back the extension cable bought yesterday and replaced it with an easier model. Went to the local supermarket and stocked up on fresh produce and water. Tonight will be the first night since our arrival that we have cooked at home and been able to relax with the TV. Spent the afternoon competing bits and pieces. We are really settling in now. Theresa had a strange parcel today, yet another Internet router. Heaven knows why. Even the Spanish courier company had a problem finding us. Our lucky Guru has been working hard over night as five of our premium bonds have won again this month. Roast chicken dinner at home today. ... read more

Found a leak under the kitchen sink this morning. The landlord is already due to be here this morning, so will get him to look at this then. Cleaned the car out ready for cleaning after our long journey. Put a load of washing into the machine and it decided to stop working half way through. Another thing for the landlord to look at when he gets here. Out of no-where the internet started working this morning at about 9am. It’s great to be connected to the outside world again. Our pigeon Spanish had sort of been understood on the phone over the weekend. Bought a European extension socket today, but got it home and it did not work. Took the loan Satellite TV box back today and signed to have a permanent one of these. ... read more

Spent today unpacking boxes and bags brought over from the UK. Phoned the internet company again today. This time we were told that our property had not been set up to receive the internet. Very strange this, as they have already installed us a wireless Internet router. They advised that they would book for the internet to be set up and it could take upto 10 days. No TV or internet until this is sorted. Went to Amarillo Golf Resort for dinner at a restaurant that had free Wi-Fi so that we could start to get upto date. ... read more

We found out The Canarian Weekly Newspaper had been written completely back to front. Tried again to use the internet, but it would still not work. We are not sure if the issue is with the laptop or not, so carried on with our planned day. Took the bus into Las Americas as we have booked to collect a trial TV programme controller today. Unfortunately, the TV programme controller is run through the internet, and as we have no internet, we cannot check out what it does. Phoned our internet supplier and were told that there was another number to call for technical problems, but that they also talk Spanish. Do not have anyone that can help us with this until Monday, so will have to wait until then. We will definitely need those Spanish lessons. ... read more

When we woke this morning we were already docked in Gran Canaria. We stayed there until about 2pm unloading cargo then loading on some more. If we had known we were going to be docked that long, we could have got off, but we will remember for next time. Arrived in Tenerife about 5pm. This was 2 hours ahead of our 7pm target arrival time. We were a little apprehensive about our arrival as we had heard so many horror stories about customs regulations here. As it turned out, we were just waved through without any questions by the 4 customs officers. Arrived at the apartment at about 7pm. Took about half an hour to unload the car then another half an hour to load into the lift for several journeys to the fourth floor where ... read more

Met advisor at the Police Station for our Residencia and NIE documents at 9am. He speeded them through for us sorting out any hiccups as we went, and by 10am we left the building documents in hand. This would normally take about 3 – 4 hours unassisted The NIE document means that we are legally entitled to stay here and can work if we want to. All the locals that we know that do not have this have encountered problems. The Residencia is needed to get connected re phones, mobiles or the internet. Went to our bank and changed the address with them to the apartment. Got the bus to Iceland where we met our landlord for bacon sandwiches and coffee. He then took us home so we didn’t have to negotiate the hill. Spent the ... read more

Left the apartment at 8.30am for the walk to the bus stop. Off to the market this morning in Torviscas. We managed to walk all the way round the market and not buy anything – that was a first. Walked from Torviscas to Las Americas – about 3 miles along the beach. Major waves today, even the surfers thought it was rough. Got a little wet. Had lunch at bar run by an English couple. Were talking to them about going the following day to get our Residencia and NIE from the Police Station. They recommended someone to help us do this. And the arrangement was made that he would meet us at the station at 9am tomorrow morning. Phoned Telefonica to try to get the phone and internet working. Phone now working, but internet is ... read more
